To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL F. LUNDEBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card Curving and Straightening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for curving cards to conform to the curvature of the platens of typewriting machines, and also for straightening the. cards after they have been written upon. v It has been customary to place the card in the typewriting machine in a fiat condition, and owing to the stifi'nessof the cards, it was impossible to get the same to fit or cling close to the platen consequently the card, when struck by the types, not having a substantial backing, would present a blurred typewritten effect.
'An object of my invention is to overcome this difficulty by providing a simple, eflicient and practical machine to curve the cards, and again straighten them.
I provide a. device that will curl or curve a card or thick paper, preparatory to placing it in a typewriter, so that the card will conform substantially to the cylindrical periphery of the platen. The same deviceis also adapted for straightening the card again after it has been typewritten.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a machine constructed inaccordance with my invention and showing a card in position partly curled. Fig. 2 is an end view, showing the gearing driving the curving rolls. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section through the machine, being curled. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the machine reversed and in the operation of straightening a written card. Fig; 5 is an enlarged section of the curving rolls, showing corrugations which may grip them forward.
The card curling mechanism is-mounted on a stand, box or table 1 which may form a receptacle for a stack of cards 14. Fixed .to the stand 1 at opposite sides thereof are upright brackets 2 which form a support for a horizontal curling roll 3. Said roller:-

'A second curling roll 6 is supported at its ends by swinging arms 8 and 9 respectively connected to the carrier 11 by pivots 10. The downward movement of the arms 8 and .9 is limited by stop pins 31', the arms being yieldingly held against said pins by springs 12. Said downward movement is permitted by the slots or enlarged openingsG in plates 11, through which the gudgeons of the roll 6 pass. A hand crank 4 is secured to one end of the roll 3, and at the opposite end of said roll is secured a spur gear wheel 5 in mesh with a roll 6. V

The card 14 to be curved is placed on the table and the crank 4 turned to feed the card between the rolls. As'it passes between the roll 6 and the.surface 13, it is curved as shown in Fig. 3, the curvature being sub pinion 33 fixed to the axle of the carrier is in such stantially the same as the surface of the typewriter platen on which the card is to be placed.-
As the card is fed through the rolls, the curved end passes upward over the guard 17 and around as indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 3. As the end of the card moves downwarde after passing over the guard 17 it may touch the flat portion of the card and 'of the table 15. 'The curved card is now placed on the table 15 with its convex surface upward, and the lower edge of the card is passed between the roll 6 and the edge of the table 15 and fed forward-between the two rolls. As the card is held close to the roll 6 by the edge of the table, the portion of the card between the said edge and bite of the rolls, is held in contact with the curved surface of the roll 6 and thereby curved or deflected in the reverse direction sufiiciently to counteract the original curvature and cause the card to be fed upon the table 1 substantially flat. Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

claim! 1. In a card curling machine, the combination of a guide, a support, a swinging carrier mounted on' said support, a roll mounted resiliently upon and with respect to said swinging carrier and a roll cooperating with said resiliently mounted roll.
2. In a card curling machine, the combination of a guide, a support, a swinging car.- rier movable to either of two defined positions, a resiliently mounted arm on-said carrier, and a roll supported by said arm.
3. In a card curling machine, the combination of a guide, a support, a swinging carrier, a resiliently mounted roll, a second roll having an axle journaled in said support, and'arms supporting said first roll in contact with said second roll.
4. In a card curling machine, the combination of a guide, a support, a roll, a swinging carrier, a second roll having an axle journaled in said support, arms supporting said first roll, a pivot for each of said arms, and springs tohold said first roll in contact with said second roll.
5. In a card curling machine, the combination of a guide, a support, a roll, a swinging carrier, a second roll having an axle journaled in said support, arms supporting said first roll, a pivot for each of said arms, springs to hold said first rolls in contact with said second roll, and gears for driving said roll in a feeding direction.
6. In a card curling machine, the combination of a guide, a support, a corrugated roll, a swinging carrier, a second corrugated roll having an axle journaled in said support, arms supporting said first roll, a pivot for each of said arms, springs to hold said first roll in contact with said second roll, and gears for driving said rolls in a feeding direction.
7. In a card curling machine, the combination of a support, two rolls approximately in contact, means for rotating said rolls, said rolls being movable into either of two positions, a table coincident with the common tangent of the said rolls in one position, and a table extending at an angle to said common tangent, said tables forming part of said support.
8. In a card curling machine, the combination of a guide, a support therefor, a swinging carrier mounted on. said support and movable to either of two defined positions, card-bending rolls, a table, and means for holding said carrier at an angle to the table.

In a card curling machine, the combination of a guide, a support provided with recesses, a swinging carrier, card bending rolls mounted on said carrier, said rolls being approximately in contact, a table, and means for holding said carrier so that the common tangent of the rolls forms an angle with the table, said means comprising a pin on the carrier adapted to engage in one of the recesses in said support.

In a card-curling machine, the combination of a card guide, a support, a series of recesses in said support, a carrier mounted to swing on said support, card bending rolls mounted on said carrier, and a table arranged to direct, in one position of the carrier, a card directly to the bite of the rolls, andin another position of the carrier,

In a card curling machine, the combination of a support, a carrier. mounted to swing on said support, a pair of rotating rolls mounted on said carrier, a bar having a surface concaved to substantially the radius of one of said rolls, means whereby the carrier may be swung and held with said roll nesting in the recess in said bar, a box in connection therewith, said box comprising a flat for receiving cards, and a guard for said rolls.
16. In a card curling machine, the combination of a support, a carrier mounted on said support, said carrier being adapted to oscillate, a pair of rolls rotating approximately in contact mounted on said carrier, an inclined table mounted on said support, and in one position of said carrier making an acute angle with the common tangent of said rolls, and a receiving table.
17. In a card curling machine, the combination of a support, a carrier mounted on said support, said carrier being adapted to oscillate, a pair of rolls rotating approxi-. mately in'contact mounted on said carrier, an inclined table mounted on said support, and in one position of said carrier making an acute angle with the common tangent of said rolls, a receiving table, and a curved shield around the exterior of which a card curled by the action of the rolls may be guided. 18. In a card curling machine, thecombination with two cooperating rolls, means whereby a card may be fed between said rolls, a carrier for said rolls, means whereby the angle of the carrier with respect to the feeding means may be changed, and a concaved bar opposite one of said rolls.
19. In a card curling machine, the combination of cooperating rolls, a carrier there for, said carrier being adapted to oscillate means to feed a card betweensaid rolls, andmeans to hold a portion of the card directly against the curved surface of a roll and thereby curve the card.
20. In a card curling machine, the combi nation of rolls, a bar having a curved surface forming with one of the rolls a curved passage for the card, means to rotate said rolls and feed a card between the rolls and through said passage and means whereby said rolls may be swung to another position to straighten the card.
21. In a card curlingmachine, the combination of parallel rolls, means to feed a card between said rolls, a bar having a curved guiding surface opposite one of the rolls and formin a passage therewith and in position to degect or curve the card after passing through the rolls and means whereby said rolls may be swung to another position to straighten the card.'
22. In a card curling machine, the combination of curling rolls, means cooperating therewith to curve a card, and mechanism cooperating with the rolls to straighten the car 23. 31. In a card curling'machine, the combination of a pair of feed rolls, an inclined table located on one side of said rolls, and a curved block located on the opposite side of said rolls and forming with one of the rolls a curved passage-way.
32. In a card curling machine, the combination of a pair of feed rolls, an inclined table on one side of said rolls, and a curving block on the opposite side of said rolls, one of said rolls being movable respectively into position to cooperate with the curving block to curve a card, and into position to cooperate with said table to flatten the card.
33. In a card curling machine, the combination of a roll, a stationary support in which said roll is journaled, a swinging carrier, a roll supported thereby and cooperating with the first-named roll, a block having acurved surface located beneath the swinging roll to curve a card, a table cooperating with the swinging roll to straighten the curved card, and means for holding the swinging carrier. in positions to cause the swinging roll to cooperate with the said I block and table respectively.
34. In a machine for curling sheet material, the combination of a pair of feed rolls substantially in contact, a support for said rolls, said rolls being movable into and out of position, and means to hold the sheet material in contact with one of the rolls for a limited distance after it passes the bite of the rolls, said means being opposite said one of the rolls and forming between itself and saidone 0f the rolls, a channel.
-35. In a machinevfor curling sheet 'material, the combination of a pair of feed" rolls, devices on opposite sides ofthe bite of said rolls to curve the sheet material about a portion of a roll, and means to move said roll into positions to cooperate alternately with said devices.
36. In a card-curling machine, the combination of a roll, a curved surface opposite and curved to correspond to said roll, and cooperating means to feed a card between said surface and roll, and thereby curl the card said rolls being movable into and out of position.
37. In a card-curling machine, the combination with a block having a concaved upper surface, of a roller having a periphery substantially corresponding to the curve of the said concaved surface and arranged close to said surface whereby the concaved surface and the roller form a passage through which a card may be fed to be bent, a second roller adapted to cooperate with the roller first mentioned to feed a card into said passage in one position of said rollers, a swinging carrier on which said rollers are mounted, a cooperating feed table, and means for holding said rollers in one position near the concave surface to curve a card and in another position near the feed table to straighten a card.
38. In a card curling machine, the combination of a pair of rollers forming a card feeding mechanism, said rollers being mounted so as to be movable into one of two positions, a bar having a curved face cooperating with one of said rollers in one position to curl a card, and a table arranged at an angle tov the common tangent of said rollers when in the other position, and coopegating therewith to straighten ,a curled car 39. In a card-curling machine, the combination of a pair of rolls provided with corrugated gripping surfaces, a frame, for carrying one of said rolls and os'cillatable about the axis of 'the other of said rolls, whereby the distance between the axes of the rolls remains substantially constant, a curved passageway through which a card may be fed, and means cooperating with said oscillatable roll, in one position to curve and in another to straighten a card.
