To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICKGEORGE N IND, a subject ofthe King of Great Britain and Ireland, and FREDERICK JULYAN, a citizen of the United 'States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of CuyahOga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Paper-Feeding Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provid an efficient means for feeding paper, enabling sheets to be successively dislodged from a block of paper. The invention relates, particularly, to the means by which such feeding mechanism may be easily and quickly adjusted to receive and hold blocks of size, varying thickness, stiffness and weight of the sheets and varying amounts of mois-v ture carried thereby, and to present such paper in such a way as will enable successive sheets to be conveniently dislodged and acted upon.

The present application is a division of' our application No. 471,138, wherein a complete folding machine having the present feeding mechanism is shown and described.

This follower-plate is held against the sheets with the required degree of pressure by a pair of coiled springs 26 secured at their forward ends to the-fixed frame of the machine and at their other or rear ends to across -bar 27 that is adjustably held in any one of a series of notches in the side-bars of the sliding frame 24, as clearly shown in Fig. l.

The cross-bar portion of the sliding frame 24 (see Fig. 4) is provided with two down-.
wardly-extending ears 57 and 58, the ear 57, in the construction shown, being much shorter than the ear 58. These ears are each placed a short distance from the center of the cross-bar of the sliding frame 24. Between these two ears 57-58 fits an arm 59 havinga horizontal head portion-60 at its upper end that substantially fills the space between the two ears 5758 and this device is pivotally suspended on a pin 61 that passes through it and through said ears. From the head portion 60 at one side depends a piece 62 that lies close to the inner face of the long ear 58, which piece 62 is enlarged at itl ver end and-provided with a slot 63 through which a headed bolt 64 passes, the bolt also projecting through the long ear 58 and being adapted to have screwed upon it a thumb-nut 65. By, this construction it is evident that the arm 59 can be swung as desired upon its pivot pin 61 and held in any desired position by turning up the thumb-nut 65.

This rod passes through and fits snugly in two eyes 67 and 68 that are formed with an arm 69 that lies over the arm 59. The arm 69 is pivotally connected at its lower end to the lower end of the arm 59, the pivot being indicated by 66", and at its upper end behind the upper eye 67 it is provided with two ears 70 that lie against the head portion 60 of the arm 59, said ears being provided with short slots 71 through which pass set screws 72 that enter suitable screw-threaded holes in said head portion 60. This construction obviously permits, when the said set screws 72 are loosened, a slight lateral adjustment of the arm 69 so as to move the rod 66 and the followenplate carried thereby toward one side or the other of the machine, in which adjusted position it can be set by the turning of said set screws 72.
The rod 66 is provided with a collar 73 that is adjustably secured to it, preferably by means of a set screw, as shown in Fig. 2, and upon the location of this collar on the said rod depends the extent to which the rod can move downward in its said eyes 67-68.
74 indicates two screws that pass through holes in the cross-bar portion of the sliding frame 24, each of, said screws being located asshown in Fig. 4 about midway between one side bar of said frame and the center of the crossbar portion thereof. These screws are adapted to be pressed against the face of the vertical portlon of the follower-plate and by screwing up one screw a little more than the other the follower-plate can be turned slightlyon its rod 66 as an axis so as to press more tightly toward the folding rolls 3031 at one side than at the other.
By the construction described, it will be seen that the follower-plate can be raised or lowered, as desired, and held in its adjusted vertical position by securing the collar 78 to the rod 66; that the follower-plate can be swung slightly on the horizontal pivot pin 61 and can be secured after being swung to the desired position by means of the thumb-nut 65; that it can be given a slight side swing on the pivot 66 and secured after bein so swung by setting the screws 7 2; and tl at one side of the vertical portion of the follower-plate can be advanced slightly closer to the folding rolls 3() 31 than the other by proper adjustment of the-screws 74,all of which adjustments permit an almost universal movement of the follower-plate to adapt it to all kinds and conditions of sheets and climatic changes which affect the free movement of said sheets.

When the desired position has been reached, the device is clamped in that position by means of a small set screw 83 that passes through a horizontal lip 84 and bears against the hub of the wheel or handle 82. j I
As shown in Fig. 4, the vertical portion 25- straddles the 'supporting arms 77 by reason of two vertical openings or slots in the follower plate. These openin conveniently extend from the bottom e ge of the follower plate. It

Accordingly, there is a wide latitude in the amount. of paper which maybe on the supports, while by these adjustable supports, the pile of paper can beheld 'in proper position so that thecentral portion of each sheet, or that portion across the sheet to which it is desired to impart the primary fold, will be properly presented to the said folding rolls -31.
Referring now to the dislodging and primarily folding niechanism shown herein, the roll 31 is preferably a smooth surface, while the roll- 30 is made of yielding material. At one end the shaft 33 of the smooth roll 31 is extended and has secured thereon a suit- ;able driving pulley 34 and at its other end it has a pinion 36 indicates a rocking frame consisting of a bar extending parallel with the smooth roll 31 and pivotally hung from the shaft of such roll by blocks 37 (see Fig. 5) formed. with such bar. 38indicates bearings for the shaft 32 of the yielding roll 30, which bearings have depending lugs 39 that fit in suitable openings in the said blocks 37 and are held there by set screws 40. By this means of supporting the "shafts 32, the-roll can be slightly adjusted closer to or farther from the smooth roll 31, as required, and secured in the proper adjusted position by. the said set screws 40. This construction also admits of the ready detachment of the shaft 32' to permit the changing about'or the renewal of the sections of the roll 30, as may be required.

In a paper folding machine, the combination with a pair of folding rolls and means for rotating .t-hem, of means for supporting a pile of sheets on edge opposite said rolls, a follower plate adapted to bear against the rear of the pile of sheets, a supporting device movable toward and from the pile of sheets, a ho-rizontally-pivoted arm depending from said supporting device,

In paper folding machine, the combination with a pair of folding rolls and means for rotating them, of means for supporting a pile of sheets on edge opposite said rolls, a follower plate adapted to bear against the rear of the pile of sheets, a sup porting device movable toward and from the pile of sheets, a.horizontally-pivot3d arm depending from said supporting device,
means for locking said arm in any desired position, a rod secured to the rear face of the follower plate and means for connecting it to said arm, said rod being vertically adjustable in said connecting means.

In-a paper folding machine, the combination with a pair of folding rolls and means for rotating them, of means for supporting a pile of sheets on edge opposite said rolls, a follower plate adapted to bear against the rear of the pile of sheets, a supporting device movabletoward and from the pile 0 sheets, a horizontally-pivoted arm depending from said supporting device, means for locking said arm in any desired position, a second arm supported by said first-named arm, means for laterally adjusting said second arm, and a rod attached to said follower plate and supported by said second arm.

In a paper folding machine, the combination with a pair of folding rolls and means for rotating them, of means for supporting a pile of sheets on edge opposite said rolls, a follower plate adapted to bear against the rear of the pile of sheets, a supporting device movable toward and from the pile of sheets, a horizontally-pivoted arm depending from said supporting device, means for locking said arm in any desired position,a second arm pivoted to said firstnamed arm so as to have a lateral swing, means for holding said two arms locked together, and a rod attached to said follower plate and supported by said second arm.

In a paper folding machine, the combination with a pair of folding rolls and means for rotating them, of means for supporting a pile of sheets onedge opposite said rolls, a follower plate adapted to bear against the rear ofthe pile of sheets, a sup porting device for said follower plate movable toward and from the pile of sheets, said supporting device comprising a cross-bar portion located in rear ofsaid follower plate, a rod secured to the rear face of said follower plate and connected with said supporting device so as to be axially rotatable, and means for limiting the amount of axial rotation of said rod.

In a paper folding 'machine, the combination with a pair of folding rolls and means for rotating them, of means for supporting a pile of sheets on edge opposite said rolls, a follower plate adapted to bear against the rear of the pile of sheets, a supporting device for said follower plate movable toward and from the pile of sheets, said supporting device comprising a cross-bar portion located in ,rear of said follower plate, a rod secured ti) the rear face of said follower plate and connected with said supporting device so as to be axially rotatable, and screws engaging said cross-bar portion of the supporting device and the said follower plateto limit the 14. In a paper folding machine, the combination, with a supporting frame, of a pair of folding rolls, a vertical rack bar secured to the frame beneath said rolls, a support for the sheets to be folded slidably attached J to said rack bar, a rotatable rod journaledz' in said supportya pinion carried bysaid rod adapted to engage the teeth of said rack bar, means for locking said rod against rotation, and a follower plate having an opening through which the support extends.

In a paper folding machine, the combination with a supporting frame, of a pair of folding rolls, a pair of verticalrack bars secured to the frame beneath said rolls, a pair of supports for the sheets to be folded slidably attached to said rack bars respectively, a rotatable rod journaled in each support, a pinion. carried by said rod adapted to engage the teeth of said rack bar, and a set screw carried by said support and adaptmaples ed to be forced against and-hold said rod,
whereby the paper may be not only raised the support and rod, the portions of the follower plate and rack bar, a block of .for moving it bodily toward the block of paper, a hinged support for the follower plate moved by said means, the follower plate being'swiveled on said support.
19. In a device of the'character described, the combination, with means for supporting a block of paper, of a follower-plate mounted to be swung on two axes at right angles to each other and both parallel with a face of the follower plate.
