Be it known that I, JULIUs H HUsTnD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of .Cook and Stateof Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Envelop-Fasteners, of which the followingis a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in the class of devices used for so fastening down the aps of envelops (including wrappers and the like), as to facilitate opening the latter for inspection of their contents; and Vit relates, provement on the` fastener of Letters Patent of the United States N o. 920,466, granted to me May 4, 1909. u

The primary objects oflmy present mprovement are to facilitate the manufacture of and to provide for so reinforcing the fastening where the two members it involves, respectively on the flap 4and the body of the envelop, releasably interlock, `that the material of which it is composed, which is preferably paper, may be of much lighter-weight stock than it is required to be without suchv reinforcement, and thereby considerably reduce the cost of manufacture. i

afdepending flap 14 on its lower end and a slot 15 containing a centrally projecting tongue 16 and formed by cutting out a section 15a to be hingedly folded downwardly at the back of the member. The companionmember 17 has a tongue 18 extending from its upper end, provided with notches 19, 19, and containing a slot 20 in the junction with the body of the member, which has a section cut out of' it of the preferred general Y-shape shown to form a tongue 21, the section being unsevered along its upper edge to adapt it to be folded upwardly out of the opening 22 produced by cutting it, in the aforesaid shape, out of the body of the member. i

Each member is shown in Fig. 5 to be gummed at 23 on its rear face for cementing it to the envelop. The member 13 is thus cemented to the flap of an envelop 24 (Fig. 6), and preferably to the outer face of the same, as shown, and the member 17 is similarly cemented to the body vof the envelop in position to register with the member 13. To join the members for fastening down the envelop-flap, the first operation is to fold downwardly the flap` 15a and then introduce the tongue 18, by way of the rear face of the member 13, forwardly through the slot 15 and the tongue 16 in the latter through the slot 20, thereby producing the condition of the parts represented in Fig. 2. The flap 14 is then folded upwardly, and thereupon the tongue 21 is folded upwardly over it, and the free, relatively narrow end is inserted, like the tongue 16, through the slot 20, thereby producing the condition of the parts represented in'Fig. 3. The tongue 18 is thereupon folded downwardly over the raised tongue 21 and'slot 22, and is crowded through the latter', to expand at its edgeportions, which pass through the last-named slot, at the rear face of the member 17, as described in my aforesaid patent,the notches 19 then interlocking with the adjacent edges of the slot 22, and the fastening being completed by thus bringing the parts into the condition represented in each of Figs. 4, 5, 6 and opposite' flapA letv of Fig.

As will be seen by the construction thus described, involving the provision of the iaps 14 and 15ar and tongue 21, these latter in their folded condition reinforce the structure, by added thicknesses of material, at the junction of the interlocking parts' where it is required to be most resistant of' strain, so` that the stock of which the members are formed may be of materially lighter weight than where the additional thickness, as.` afforded by these flaps and tongue, is omitted, since the strains tolwhich the body-.portions of the. fastening members are subjected are so slight as to4 render such relatively light material` adequate.
