to provide a novel and improved latch de- -vvice for such an elevator', wherebv the elevator may be readily applied to the rod or tubing, and latched to hold its position thereon, and in order that the elevator may be readily manipulated for applying and removing the same, the latch being readily released when it is desired to detach the elevater.
It is also within the scope of the invention to provide a latch device for elevators of the type indicated, which device is comparatively simple, compact, non encumbering and inexpensive in construction, as well as being safe, time-saving, convenient, serviceable, practical and elicientin use.'
With the foregoing and other objects in zview which will appear as Vthe description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is`illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 isa plan view of one form of Isucker or polish rod elevator, parts being broken away to illustrate the latch device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the said elevator. Fig. 3 is av sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a second form of elevator with a modiedform of latch device. Referring speciiically to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the elevator comprises a circular body or casting 1 having trunnions 2 projecting from diametrically opposite points of its periphery to be jour-naled within the terminal eyes 3 of an'ordinary bail l, as is well understood in the art. The body 1 is provided with a radial slot 5 for receiving the sucker. or polish rod 6, theupper end of the rod 6 being provided with a head or member 7 to seat upon the body 1 whereby the elevator can carry the rod 6 properly when the elevator is applied thereto. l
The body 1 is provided with a latch de vice, and to this end the body is provided diametrically opposite the slot 5 with a recess 8 in its periphery, and the body is further provided with an arcuate bore or passage 9 extending from one end of the recess to one side of the slot 5 between the ends of the slot or adjacent the inner end thereof. An arcuate latch bolt 10 of circular cross section is slidable within that end portion of the bore 9 remote'from the recess 8, and a block or member 11 is fitted snugly within the recess 8 to fill the same, the block or member 11 being secured within the recess 8 by means of screws or other securing elements 12 engaged through the block and taking into the body 1. The block 11 closes its respective end of the bore 9, and a coiled wire expansion spring 13 is disposed within the bore 9 between the latch bolt 10 and the block 11 to yieldably project the latch bolt .into the lslot 5. The projecting end of the latch bolt 10 is beveled, as at 14, whereby when the elevator is applied to the rod 6, the rod in being received by the slot 5 will force the latch bolt backwardly against the tension of the spring 18, so that when the rod reaches the inner end of the slot 5, the latch bolt 10 will snap over the side of the rod for holding the elevator in place upon the rod.
rlhe periphery of the body 1 is provided with a channel 15 extending from that side of the slot 5 from' which the bore 9 extends, and a slot lis provided between the channel 15 and bore 9 adjacent the said side of the slot 5.
A stem 17 has its inner end threaded or otherwise engaged to the latch bolt 10 and works within the slot 16, andv the outer or free end of the stem 17 is provided witha curved finger piece 18 working within the channel 15. The finger piece 18 is thus housed within the channel, and is not liable to be accidentally swung by'the engagement of an object with the elevator.
The parts may be readilyassembled, and when the block l11 is removed from the recess 8,' the latch 'bolt 10 and spring 13 may be introduced in succession into the bore 9 from the recess 8, it being understood that the stem 17 is detached from the latch bolt. Then, the block may be secured within the recess 8 to hold the spring and latch bolt lwithin the bore 9, and the stem 17 may then be inserted through the slot 1G and properly engaged to the latch bolt. The stem 17 in i working within the slot 1G of limited length `being moved past thelatch which will cause the latch to snap over the side of the rod for holding the body and rod assembled. The present latch device is not liable to accidentally release itself. and has the desirable attributes which are essential in a device of the present character. The latch bolt may be readily released by pressing Vthe finger piece 1S backwardly or away from the slot T he latch device does not encumber the elevator body, but at the same time serves its office in a thoroughly efficient and desirable manner.
In Fig. et, the modified form of elevator is provided with a modified form of latch device, which embodies the features of the latch device above described. The body 1 is provided with the diametricallyopposite trunnions 2 for engaging the terminal eyes 3 of the bail 4', and the body 1 is also provided with the radial slot 5 for receiving the rod G. The body 1 is provided with a straight bore 9 lea'ding to one side of the slot 5', and the latch bolt 10 is also straight and slides snugly within the inner end portion of the bore 9 to project into the slot 5. A plug 11 is threaded or otherwise engaged into the outer end of the bore 9 and a coiled wire expansion spring 13 is disposed within the bore 9 between the plug 11 and latch bolt 10 to yieldably project the latch bolt inwardly. The inner end of the latch bolt is beveled, as at 1-1, whereby thc latch bolt will operate in the manner of the latch bolt 10 above described. The adjacent ends. ofthe latch bolt 10 and plug 11 are preferably provided with sockets 19 tically in the same manner as the first form,A
and a reiteration of the operation is therej fore not thought necessary, it also being noted that the parts ofthe modified form of latch device may be assembled practically in the same manner as with the first form.
The elevator illustrated inv Figs. 6 and 7 is adapted for raising a well tubing or casing, and is of especial construction for that reason. The well tubing or casing elevator comprises a body embodying two arcuate sections 1a and 1b hinged together at 1c. cuate `slot`1d extending from the hinge 1c,
- and the adjacent end of the section 1b is provided with an extension 1e arranged to swing into the slot 1'1 when the sections are swung together. The free end of the section la is provided with a lug or portion 1fA projecting tangentially therefrom, and the free portion of the section 1b is bifurcated or forked to provide the portions 1g arranged to straddle the lug 1i when the sections are swung together. The lug or portion 1f is of sufficient length to project beyond the portions lg when the sections are swung together, the portions.1g being arranged to swingl against the free end of the section la at the opposite sides of the lug 1f.
The section 1n is provided adjacent its ends or adjacent the hinge 1c and lug 1t with outstanding apertured ears 2a for the .engagement of the terminal eyes 3fL of the bail -la whereby the eleva-tor may be properly carried by the bail, it being noted that one section of the body is attached to the bail, while the other section'is adapted to swing freely in applying and removing the elevator. i

The lug 1f is provided with a bore 9a' eX- tending therethrough, and a latch bolt 10' is slidable within the inner end portion of the bore 9, while a plug 11a is threaded or otherwise engaged into the outer'end of the bore. A coiled wire expansion spring 13a is disposed within the bore 9a between the latch bolt and plug, for yieldably projecting the latch bolt inwardly. The inner end ofthe latch bolt is beveled, as at 11a, whereby when the free end of the section 1b is swung toward and against the free end of The section 1 is provided with an arleo the section la, the latch bolt Will be` pressed into the bore 9 to allow the free endi'of the section lb to pass the latch bolt, and .Wherewithin the slot 16a Vand is secured to thel latch bolt, and the stem is provided with va curved linger piece 18a working within the' channel 15a.

In applying the elevator to a Well tubing or casing, the latch l0a is released by pressing the inger piece 18a outwardly, and the section lb is then swung open so that the well tubing or` casing may be moved between the two sections. When the section lb is swung open, the extension ld thereof will project between the ends of the section la, and then when the tubing or casing is received between the two sections, it will engage the extension 1d and then by moving the section ld against the tubing, the section 1b will at the same time be swung to closed position against the free end of the section'la, and the latch device will auto* matically engage the section 1h for holding the two sections together. In this manner, the elevator ma v be applied to the well tubing or casing by one hand, since when the section l" is swung open` the section lfl may be manipulated by the Shand for conveniently applying the elevator to the tubing or casing. The sections or jaws la and lb are thus automatically closed and latched when they are applied to the tubing or'casing, and the latch device has the advantages of the latch devices above described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. In an elevator of the character described,` a body having a bore, a channel, and a slot between the channel and bore, a latch bolt slidable within one end portion of the bore, a. member engaged to the body to close the other end of the bore, an eX- pansion spring within the bore between the said member and latch bolt, a stem engaged to the latch bolt and working Within the said slot, the stem having a linger piece working Withinthe said channel.
2. In an elevator of the character described, a pair of arcuate sections hinged together', the free end of one section having a portion projecting therefrom, the free end of the other section being bifurcated and havingtportions adapted to straddle the lirst mentioned portion and seat against the free endiof thelirst mentioned section, the first mentionedportion lhaving a bore extending therethrough, a channel at its free end, and4 a slot between the channel and bore, a latch bolt slidable 'within one end of the bore', a. member engaged into the other end of the bore, an expansion spring within the bore between the said member and latch bolt, the second mentioned section having a keeper between said portions for receiving the latch bolt, a stem engaged to the latch bolt and working in said slot, and the stem having a finger piece housed within the channel.
