Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT T. BUMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Litehfield, county of Montgomery, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Safety Devices for Power-Presses and the like, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates generally to safety devices for machinery and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful improvement in safety devices especially designed and adapted for use in connection with powerdriven punching and stamping presses and the like adapted to be intermittently set in motion or otherwise manipulated by an operator.
The principal objects of my present invention are to provide a safety device especially for machines of the class stated adapted to actuate the clutch mechanism of the press to start the machine and during its operation to impede access to the dies of the press and thereby protect the hands and arms of the operator from injury; to provide an efficient safety device of the kind and for the purposes stated of comparatively simple form and construction, which may be readily and economically operatively applied to presses and the like as now generally manufactured and built, and which is capable of quick, easy, and convenient manual manipulation by the operator; and to generally improve upon, and
simplify the construction of, safety devices of the kind described. a
With the above and other objects in view, my present invention resides in the provision of a safety device for machines of the class stated having an operating member in the form preferably of a swingably movable or hinged plate having operative con nection with the clutch tripping-member of the machine, and adapted, when manipulated to machine-running position, to actuate said clutch-member to set the press in motion, the plate, when in normal or inoperative position, permitting easy and ready access to the dies of the press, but when in abnormal or machine-running position providing a guard-wall in front of the dies of the press and thereby'impeding access thereto, and in certain novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which show the preferred embodiment of my. invention, Figure l is a side elevational view of a power-press equipped withasafety device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a power press equipped with a slightlymodified form of safety device embodying my invention.
In the said drawings, in which like ref erence characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, my new safety device is illustrated in connection with a power-driven punching or stamping press of any ordinary, approved, or standard construction preferably of that class adapted to run open or continuously, if desired, after having been tripped, the same comprising, as is usual, an upstanding frame 1, a horizontally-disposed table 2, a fixed diememher 3 on table 2, and a cooperating diemember t carried by a member or plunger 5 adapted to be reciprocated by an eccentric or the like actuated on the rotation of a shaft 6 driven by a pulley-wheel or the like 7, pulley 7 in turn being driven by a belt or other suitable means, not shown, and being loose and free to rotate on shaft 6 except when and during the intervals or periods of time it is operatively connected to shaft 6 by clutching mechanism. To engage or disengage pulley-wheel 7 with or from shaft 6, I have here shown a suitable clutch tripping-member or lever 8 pivotally mounted, as at 9,
Fixed to frame 1 to the rear of table 2, is an angle-member 11 provided with a projecting stud-shaft l2. Journaled to rock on stud-shaft 12, is a member orbell-crank on frame 1 and provided preferably integrally with a rearwardly projecting arm 10.

Having one or its lower, end pivota-lly fastened in the fork or bifurcation of portion 14 of member 13 and its other or upper end pivotally fastened to arm lO of clutch tripping-member 8, is alink orrod 16.
Journaled in suitable perforated bosses or other bearings 1 7 ,1 ;7and projecting crosswise of table 2preferab1y at, or adjacent the j front edge thereof, as clearly seen in Fig. 2, is a rockable member or bar 18 bent at one end to provide a lateral extension or arm 19, arm 19 in the preferred form vof my safety device, being normally presented downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2 and in full lines in Fig. 1. Pivotally fastened at one or its forward end, as at 20, to arm 19 and projecting rearwardly of frame 1, is a bar or rod 21 slidably movable lengthwise intermediate its ends through, and supported adjacent its rearward end by, said downwardlyprojecting portion 15 of rockable member or bell-crank 13.
Suitably fixed to bar 18, as by means of strap-hinges 22 and set-screws 23, as seen in Fig. 2, is a plate or the like 24. This plate 24 is so fixed to bar 18 as to extend normally, as when the machine or press is inoperative, flatwise approximately horizontally forwardly from, and to, in effect, provide a forward extension of, table 2, as illustrated in Fig. 2 and also in full lines in Fig. 1. Plate 24 is also so arranged and adapted to be manually swingably or rockably moved, by, and away from, the operator of the press through an arc of approximately 90 relatively to table 2 to extend abnormally (as it might be said), as when the machine or press is operating and running, approximately at right angles to table 2. WVhen in such machine-running position, plate 24, as indicat-ed by dotted lines in Fig. 1, projects in upstanding approximately vertically disposed position in front of the dies 3 and 4 of the press and thereby impedes access thereto. Preferably adjustably fixed on bar 21 to the rear of said portion 15 of member 13, is an abutment 25, abutment 25 being adapted, on plate 24 being swung to its approximately upright or machine-running position, to engage with said portion 15 of member 13 to rock member 13 and thereby, through said link or rod 16, trip said clutchmember 8 to start or set themachine or press in motion. Preferably this abutment 25 is located on rod 21 at such point as to only forcibly engage with, and hence rock, member 13 when plate 24, on being swung from its normal approximately horizontally disposed position, has approximately reached its full machine-running position.
Suitably fastened at one end to portion 14 of member 13, or to an extension 26 projecting laterally therefrom, and at its other end to frame 1 or other fixed point, is a coiled spring or the like 27 adapted, plate 24 being in its said normal or approximately horizontally disposed position, to yi'eldingly, through link or rod 16, maintain clutch tripping-member 8 in its normal position, pulley-wheel 7 being disengaged from, and free to rotate on, shaft 6.
In operation or use, on plate 24 being swingably moved by the operator from its ber 8, through link 16, will be actuated to start or set the machine or press in motion, plate 24 being then in approximately upright position in front of the cooperating dies 3 and 4 of the press andthereby impeding access thereto. Immediately upon plate "24 being reversely swungby the operator from its said approximately upright to its approximately horizontally disposed position relatively to table 2, abutment 25 will be carried away from or out of engagement with rockable member 13, when clutch-member 8, through said spring 27, will at once return to normal position, tripping or actuating the clutch-mechanism of the press to stop the operation or running of the same.
From the foregoing, it will be evident that my new safety device comprises few parts and is exceedingly simple in construction, and that the guard-member or plate 24 is adapted to provide not only an operating member or handle for manipulating the device to operative or machine-running position, but also a safety wall to impede, when in operative position, access to the dies of the press. I have foundmy new safety device to be most eflicient for thepurposes stated and that it may be both manufactured and applied to a press at comparatively slight cost. It is to be understood that my safety device, while herein shown and described in connection with a ower-driven punch-press, may be equally well used in connection with presses of different kinds, and that changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and comblnation of the several parts thereof may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and spirit of my invention.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a slightly modified form of safety device embodying my invention. In this form of my invention, rockable member or bell-crank13 is reversely mounted on stud-shaft 12, its portion 14 projecting forwardly, instead of rearwardly, of frame 1. Also plate24 andbar 18 are so fixedly connected together that lateral arm 19 or bar 18 projects normally, as when plate 24 is in its normal position, approximately horizontal-1y forwardly of table 2, abutment 25- being fixed on bar 21 at a point to the front, instead of to the rear, of

Otherwise this form of my invention is similar to that hereinbefore described and shown particularly in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a power-press having a clutch-member, of a guard-plate hinged at one end on the press, said plate projecting normally forwardly of the press and away from the dies thereof, and opera tive connections between said plate and said clutch-member for tripping said clutchmember on said plate being swingably actuated to press-running position, said plate being hinged to swing toward said dies when actuated to press-running position.
2. The combination with a power-press having a clutch-member, of a guard-plate hinged at one end on the press, said plate projecting normally approximately horizontally forwardly of the press and away from the dies thereof, and operative connections between said plate and said clutch-member for tripping said clutch-member on said plate being swingably actuated to pressrunning position, said plate being hinged to swing toward said dies when actuated to press-running position and when in such latter position projecting approximately vertically relatively to the press and in front of said dies.
3. The combination with a power-press having a clutch-member, of a guard-plate hinged at one end on the press, said plate projecting normally approximately horizontally forwardly of the press and away from the dies thereof, a bell-crank lever rockable on the press, a link pivotally connected to said lever and to said clutch-member, and means for actuating said lever and link to trip said clutclrmember on said plate being manipulated to press-running position, said plate being hinged to swing toward said dies when manipulated to press-running position and when in such latter position projecting approximately vertically relatively to the press and in front of said dies.
4. The combination with a power-press having a clutch-member, of a guard-plate hingedly mounted on the press, said plate projecting normally approximately horizontally forwardly of the press and away from the dies thereof, a bell-crank lever rockable on the press, a, link pivotally connected to said lever and to said clutch-member, a rod having pivoted connection with said plate and sliding connection with said lever, an abutment on said rod adapted to engage with said lever to actuate the same and said link to trip said clutch-member on said plate being manipulated to press-running position, and means for yieldingly maintaining said clutch-member in normal position, said plate, when manipulated to press-running position, being swingable by the operator toward said dies and when in such latter position projecting approximately vertically relatively to the press and in front of said dies.
5. Means for actuating the clutch tripping mechanism of presses of the kind described, the same including a guard-plate adapted to normally project approximately horizontally forwardly of the press and away from the dies thereof, said plate being swingable toward the dies into press-running position and when in such latter position projecting approximately vertically in front of, and thereby impeding access to, said dies.
6. Means for actuating the clutch tripping mechanism of presses of the kind described, the same including a manipulating guardplate adapted to normally project approximately horizontally forwardly of the press and toward the operator, and away from the dies, thereof, said plate being swingable by, and away from, the operator of the press into pressrunning position and when in such latter position projecting approximately vertically in front of, and thereby impeding. access to, said dies.
