MALCOLM A. MURRAY, or MOUNTAIN IRON", nnvnnsorn.
nonr-rnornnnme MECHANISM. 1
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MALCOLM A; MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain Iron, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat- Propelling Mechanism, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to boat propelling mechanism, having for its primary object to provide a device which may be associated with an ordinary boat now in use, and which will retain the use of the ordinary oar thereby reducing the cost of manufacture to a minimum. 7
1 Another object of this invention is to connect a plurality of cars to the sides of a boat, by means of a universal joint or coupling and to associate with the oars, a simple and efficient actuating means, by means of which the oars on each side of the boat will be simultaneouslyactuated. 1
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawingsand pointed out in the claims forming a partof this specification.
' Referring'to the drawing: Figure lis a plan view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention illustrating the application thereof :Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2'2 of Fig. '1 and looking in the direction indicated by v the arrows; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4
is a top plan view of the device showing the position taken by the cars when pressure is exerted on the actuating lever.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention, in order to properly illustratethe'same, a boat 5 is provided which maybe of the ordinary or any desired form and having connected to each side thereof-asubstantially ll-shaped bracket 6, the free end'of .each of the arms thereof beingfixedly sercured to the outer face of the boat through the medium of rivets or the like, while the V is pivotally mountedat its apex to a connecting-bar 7 said connecting bar having the one end thereof bifurcated and pivotally connected to an car which is appropriately formed on a horizontal bar 8, the latter being arranged in spaced relation to the side Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 1?, H15. Application filed October e, 1913. 1 Serial No. 794,231.
for a purpose which will be presently described.
Arranged in uniformly spaced apart 1 613,?
tion on each side ofthe boat 5, are a plurality of sockets 10 each of which is in enengagement with the one end 11 of an car 12, said end 11 being provided with a ball on of the boat. The opposite end of said connectlng bars 7 is reduced as indicated at 9 theterminal thereof for engagement in said socket so as to provide a universal coupling or-joint in order to allow for the free move ment of the oar. The opposite end of each of saidoars is of the ordinary construction with. a paddle 13 formed thereon for an obvious purpose. Extending upwardly from said bar 8 are a pluralityof arcuate arms 14, the free end of each ofwhich is bifurcated and adapted for pivotal engagement with the one end 15 of each of the pins 16, the latter being counter-sunk in each of the oars 12 having engagement therethrough,
said end 15 being enlarged and relatively flat so as to be accommodated between the branches of the bifurcation. By the provision of the pins 16, it is seen that the oars 12 are free to move from engagement with the arcuate arms 14 as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3.
In order to actuate each series of oars on each side of the boat 5, I have provided a simple and efficient actuating lever 17 which in the present instance comprises an elongated 'rod, the one end of which has formed therein a slot 18 which is engaged by in a forward direction, and the blade ends 13 of the oars 12 are allowed to be embedded inthewatenit is obvious that the boatwill be advanced, in view of, the fact that the one end of the lever 17 is in connection with the horizontal bar 8, the latter having engagement with each of the oars 12 through the medium of the arms 14:. At the end of the stroke, pressure is exerted rearwardly on the handle end of each of the I actuating levers 17 which causes theoars tofeather owingto their pivotal connection to the bracket 14 and the oars again are allowed to drop into the water and the same operation performed. During this opera tion, it will be necessary for the cars 12 to have a certain amount of play in order to facilitate the operation of the same, and with this in view,iI have provided the universal joints by which the one end of each of the oars is connected to the boat, and'the pins 16 by means of which each of the oars scription and accompanying drawings com- 12 are connected to the horizontal bar 8. a
It will be understood that the above deprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction,
' each of said oars together on each-side of the boat, and means forming said connections between said cars and said bar to permit feathering of'the former.
2. A boat propelling mechanism including a plurality of oars, the one end of each of which is pivotally mounted on the sides of the boat, a horizontal bar connecting each of said oars together on each side of the boat, and arms formed on said bar to pivotallymount said oars to permit of their being automatically feathered.
3. A boat propelling mechanism including a plurality of oars, the one end of each of which is pivotally mounted on the sides of the boat,- a horizontal bar to connectthe oars of each side, arms formed on each of said bars to permit lateral movement of said oars in one direction and to check such movement in the opposite direction, and means for-actuating said bars.
49A boat propell'ng mechanism includ- V ing aplurality of oars, the one end of each of which is pivotally mounted on the sides of the boat, a horizontal bar connecting each of said oars together on each' side of the boat, and an actuating lever pivotally mounted on each side of the boat andhaving connection with said horizontal bar for simultaneously actuating the series of cars on each side of the boat.
5.7 A boat propelling mechanism including a pluralityof oars, the one end of each of which is pivotally mounted onthe sides 7 of the boat, a horizontal bar, arms-carried by said bar-and having" engagement with said oars, a connecting bar extending from saidhorizontal bar, and an-actuating lever pivotally mounted on each side of said boat, and having engagement with said connect ing baryfor simultaneously actuating said and having pivotal engagement with the sides ofthe boat; and an actuating lever, pivotally mounted QIlSLld boat and havlng engagement with said connectlng barfor the purpose specified. I
7. A boat propelling mechanism including a plurality of oars,-the one end of, eachi of which is pivotally mounted on the boat, a horizontal bar arranged subjacent said oars,' a plurality of arcuate arms arranged 1n uniformly'spaced apart-relation on said bar, and having engagementwith said cars,
a plurality. of pivot pins, one of which has I the one end thereof engagedwith each of said cars and the opposite end pivot-ally engaged to one of said'arms, a connecting bar, the one end of which i pivotally V mounted on said horizontal bar, the oppositeend thereof being reduced, a V-shaped brace interposed between said connecting bar and said boat; said V-brace having pivotal connectlon at 1ts apex to said connect u ing bar, and an actuating lever pivotally mounted on each side of the boat and having connection Wltll' sald connecting bar for simultaneously actuatingthe series ofoars -,1
on eachside of the boat. I i y In testimony whereof I aflix my'signature in presence of two witnesses. j
