To all whom it may. concern Be it known that I, Aonnnnnr S. JAQUITH,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Applying Metallic Leaf, of which the following is a specification.
V This invention relates to devices for ap plying to prepared surfaces to be ornamented, stripes or bands of metallic-leaf supplied from a spirally wound supply roll and applied to an adhesive surface by a delivering roll, the device having a handle by which it is manipulated to cause the de livering roll to draw the ribbon of metallic leaf from the supply roll and press it against the prepared surface. In a device of this character the supply and delivering rolls are mounted to rotate between side plates which are separately connected so that the core of the delivering'roll may be removed when the ribbon is exhausted and a charged roll ins'ertedand confined.
The invention hasfor its object, first, to provide improved means for locking the two plates in their operative relation to each other, and secondly, to enable the platesto be adjustably spaced apart to accommodate rolls of different lengths and ribbons of dif-- ferent widths.
The invention consists in the improve ments which I willnow proceed to describe and claim.

In the drawings, 12 represents a carrying plate which is preferably flat sided and relatively thin and is provided at its inner end with an extension which is bent at right angles to the body of the plate 'to' form'a handle-carrying shank 13 (Fig. 3 Said shank has an orifice 14 adapted to receive a screw 15'which secures the handle 16 to the shank, the shank being also preferably pro vided with cars 17 at its upper and lower edges, said ears imparting suitable stiifness and rigidity to the shank. J (I To the outer end portion of the carrying plate 12 is rigidly attached an outer'stud 18, and .to an intermediate portion of the carrying plate is attached an inner stud 19, said studs projecting laterally from the plate and being preferably attached thereto by rivets 20' which may be integral with the studs, inserted in orifices in the carrying plate and upset or headed on the outer surface of said plate. A portion of the inner surface of the carrying plate is offset inwardly to. form an annular bearing face 21" against whichone end of the supply roll is:

During the operation of applying the metallic leaf to a prepared surface 29, as illustrated by Fig. 3, the paper strip'26 is wound upon the delivering roll, the metallic ribbon being de-- posited on said surface, which is previously treated with an adhesive.
' 30 represents the confining plate, which is adapted to be directly and detachably locked to the studs 18 and 19 in the manner next described. The confining plate 30 is of the same general form as the carrying plate 12 and is provided with apertures 31, which are preferably square, as shown by Fig. 6, and are arranged to receive the outer and inner studs 18 and 19. Said apertures are formed to permit an endwise movement of the confining plate relatively to the studs to cause portions of the edges of the apertures 31 to enter the notches 22.

When the confining plate-30 is detached a charged supply roll is slipped onto the inner stud 19, one end of said roll bearing on the seat21. The confining plate is then placed upon the outer ends of the studs 18 6), which receives "the stud 19. The bowed and 19 and the strut 32 isthen swungto the position shown by Fig. 1, its flange 3 1 being thus caused to bear on the inner stud 19 and force the carrying plate endwise sufliciently to cause portions of the walls of its aper 'tures31 to enter the notches 22, thus directly locking the confining plate to the two studs, the strut 32' being held in the position shown by Fig. 1 by its frictional engagement with the stud 19. The confining plate is therefore firmly locked in its operative position and the supply roll is securely confined on the stud 19.
To the inner side of, the "confining plate is attached a friction spring 36, which .is a leaf of thin tempered sheet metal, preferably steel, attachedat one end by rivets 37 to the plate 30 and bearing loosely and slidingly at its other end on the said plate, the intermediate portion of the spring being bowed inwardly from the plate 30 and provided with a slot 38 (see dotted lines, Fig.
portion and end portions of the springs are relatively wide and are connected by rela tively narrow neck portions 39. The spring therefore hasa wide bearing on oneend of the supply roll and is at the same time rendered sensitive in its action, so that it exerts suitable tension on the supply roll without unduly retarding the rotation of said roll.
In the construction thus far described the delivering roll is permanently confined on the stud 18 between the confining plate 12 and the fixed confining member 23 on said stud. In the construction shown by Figs. 7
and 8 the fixed confining member 23 is omitted and the confining plate designated by 30 is provided with an ofiset portion 40 adapted to bear on one end of the delivering roll. Said oifset portion may be either integral with the confining plate 30 or a separate piece or washer. The outer and inner studs 18 and 19'" are each provided with two series of notches 22 and 22*, said notches being in opposite sides of the studs and the notches of one series being in staggered relation with the notches of the other series. edge portions of said apertures in notches 22 Provision is thus made for directly locking the confining plate to the studs at different distances from the carrying plate 12 so that the device is adapted to hold a supply roll and a delivering roll of any desired length.
The portions of the shank 13 which form the ears 17 are preferably provided with tongues 17 (Fig.3), and the plate 12 is preferably provided with recesses 12 which receive said tongues, as shown by Fig. 3, when the ears 17 are bent to place. The tongues may be upset at their outer ends after their insertion in the sockets, so that they constitute rivets securely connecting the ears 17 with the plate 12, the ears hearing on the inner sideof said plate. The con fining plate 30 in the embodiment of the invention shown by Figs. 1 to 6 is formed at its inner end to bear on the shank 13 at its ears.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A device of the" character stated, comprising a carrying plate having a laterally projecting handle-carrying shank at its inner end and laterally projecting outer and inner studs, one at the outer end portion and the other at an intermediate portion of said plate, a delivering roll journaled on the outer stud, a confining plate provided with apertures formed to receive the studs and to permit its endwise movement thereon,

A device of the character stated, comprising a carrying plate having a laterally projecting handle-carrying shank at its inner end and laterallyprojecting outer and inner studs, one at the outer end portion and the other at an intermediate portion of said plate, a delivering roll journaled on the outer stud, a confining plate provided with apertures formed to receive the studs and to permit its endwise movement thereon, said studs being provided with notches, a swinging strut pivoted to the confining plate and movable into engagement with one of said studs, to move the confining plate endwise and thereby enter edge portions of its apertures into said notches and thus directly lock the confining plate to each ofthe studs, and a supply roll journaled on the inner stud and removably confined thereon'by the carrying and securing plates, each stud being provided with a series of notches whereby the confining plate may be locked at different distances from the carrying plate.
