DUPLICAT OB-IVIACHINE AND THE LIKE.
List-$952.
Specification of Letters Iatent. I Patented Aug. 10, 1915.
Application filed February 24, 1912. Serial No. 679,593.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoncn ARTHUR WIL- LIAM Rusnwonrrr, subject of the King of 7 Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 137 Great Western street, Moss Side, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Duplicator- Machines and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to rotary or horizontal reciprocating duplicating machines, and it proposes certain improvements in or relating to the type-carrying forms of such machines, whereby a different name and address will be printed on each letter or circular, so that the same will appear to have been specially written to the addressee.
For this purpose, the invention consists in constructing a flexible type-carrying form with a gap or space where the type is set up for printing the name and address of the person to whom the letter or other matter is directed, by omitting three or more of the type bars from such form and joining the remaining bars by suitable connecting plates or the like. In the said space are inserted endwise a similar number of bars fastened together so as to constitute a single removable type plate, and in the grooves in such plate are inserted the type for printing the name and address of an addressee, one of these plates being used for each addressee. Guides are provided on each edge of the type plate which slide in grooves in the bars of the flexible form, the wholebeing arranged in such a manner that at each revolution or operation of the machine, the type plate can be rapidly withdrawn and instantly replaced by another plate having a different name and address thereon.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, whereof:
Figure 1 is a fragmental transverse sectional view of a flexible type-carrying-form, as applied to a rotary machine, equipped with the improved type plate, the section being taken, on the line XY, of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a fragmental plan view, with the type plate partly withdrawn; Fig. 3 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 1, taken on the line X-Y of Fig. 4 but showing the form as applied to a horizontal, reciprocating machine; gand Fig. Fig, 3.
The flexible type-carrying form is here shown as constructed with a number of transverse bars D, which hold the type K in place in the grooves E between them. These bars are connected by wires or links in the ordinary way, so as to enable the form to be placed upon either a curved or a flat surface. A space or gap is produced in the form by removing some of the bars D, the bars D at either side of sufch space or gap being connected at their bases by strips or plates C. The type-carrying plate A to be inserted in the aforesaid space or gap is built up of bars corresponding in number to those removed and connected together in some suitable manner, the outermost bars being provided upon their outer side faces with ribs or analogous guide pieces or shoulders H, which guides slidably fit in the longitudinal grooves in the adjacent side faces of the bars D. The grooves B between the adjacent bars of which the plate A is composed receive the type set up to print the name and address of an addressee, the upper surfaces of these type being at the same height as those of the letter type K.
In Fig; 1, F indicates the cylinder of a rotary duplicating machine, and in Fig. 3, F indicates the table of a horizontal reciprocating machine.
The mode of working is as follows: The plate A, with a given name and address set up in type thereon, is inserted by means of its guides into the grooves in the bars D, D, thus filling the aforesaid space or gap and resulting'inthe production of a continuous, flexible printing form. The cylinderF, (or table F), is then operated to print the letter, circular or the like, complete with the name andaddress of the person to whom it is tobe sent, after which the type plate A is withdrawn and replaced by another type plate having a difierent name and address thereon, for printing another letter at the next operation of the machine.
Having describedmy invention, I claim A flexible type carrying form for both rotary and horizontal duplicating machines composed of a series of flexibly'connected type holding bars provided with a gap extending wholly across the same and which is produced by the omission of certain of said bars, the bars at the sides of said gap nice, I
A is a plan view of the sides of the gap and the bars at the sides of said plate havlng inter-engaging grooves and ribs whereby the type carrying plate may be inserted into or removed from the gap by a sliding movement in a direction 1 transverse to the form.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
GEORGE ARTHUR WILLIAM RUSHWORTH.
