To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, CHARLES Purses, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented. new and useful Improvements in Shock-Absorbers, of which the following is a specification.
The general objects of this inventidn are to refine the construction of shock absorbers for automobiles and like vehicles, in point of promoting the efiiciency of the and in simplifying the manufacture thereof; and further, to effect the shock-absorbing qualities in such a device, by hydraulic and pneumatic means. And to these ends, the invention resides in a-tank reservoir, a series of cylinders mounted on the vehicle, and having communications with the tank and further provided with spring-pressed plunger-s Which operate against the water in the Other objects will appear and be be understood from that embodiment of my in vention of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had to the accompanymg drawings, forming part hereof in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a motor-vehicle showing my invention applied thereto. The tank 5 may be positioned on the chassis a by the supports 6 (i at any convenient location, such. as at the center, as
shown in the drawings and this tank is provided with an inlet 7, and has openings in the ends such as are designated by 8. Pipes 9-9 are directed into the openings, and connect the tank with the cylinders 10-10, which are mounted on the axles bb of the vehicle in any suitable manner, and are attached to the usual elliptical springs 0, as shown.
The cylinders as shown in Fig. 2, are provided with heads, 11, which are detachablyv secured to the chambers by screw-threads and are provided with centrally located openings 12, and stuffing boxes 13. piston rod 14 is slidingly fitted in this opening and has one end 15 secured to the under portion of the vehicle frame, by any suitable means, such as the bolts 16. The other end of the piston rod is provided with a head 1:2, which is of the usual piston-head construction, and is provided with packing rings 18.

obviously fills the chamber 22 of the regulator; thus the water contained in the regulator is a surplus quantity and as the total quantity of the water in the tank decreases, the plunger of the regulator is progressed downwardly and the loss in the water is compensated by the reduction in the capacity of the cylinder chamber.
The movement on the part of the plunger maintains the air in the chamber 5 at a des led density and consequently desired resiliency may be maintained.
shown in F ig; 1, a third opening is provided. at one end of-t'le tank, and this opening receives a pipe 26,'which connects the tank with the water manifold 03 of the motor 0. This pipe extends into the tank for a greater portion of the length of the tank, and is provided near its mouth with a branch pipe 2?, which communicates with the lower part of the radiator of the cooling system. These pipes are provided in the shock-absorbing system for the purpose of preventing the freezing of the water in the pipes and various chambers, for it will be obvious that as the water is circulating in the cooling system of the motor, and is being cooled by the radiatonthe water surrounding the motor is relatively warm, and before it reaches the radiator it passes through the tank, thus preventing the temperature of the tank-water from dropping below the freezing point.
