To 613101720222. it lmay concern Be it known thet l, AAnoN M. BILLsTniN, e. citizen et the United States, and resident of llderwood, Baltimore county, State of iiieiylnnd, here invented certain new and useful improvements in Displeydoxes, of which thD following is e snecilieation.
rfhe present invention relates to im roveinents in knock down or folding display boxes and will he described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l. is u plan of the blank from which the embodiment of the invention selected for purposes of illustration is or1ned; Fig. 2 is n perspective View of the improved box with the cover arranged to display the contents; Fis'. 3 is e sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. Fig. s is e sectional View on the line 'ei-l of Fig. Q; Fig'. 5 is a view similer to Fig. showing the top in n different position; Fis. f is-u View illustrating the position ot' the several ports when arranged to provide e; eoinplete inclosure of the contents of the lios; Fig. 'T is e sectional view through one of the ends of the box' with the parts arranged es inFig. 6; Figs. S and 9 illustrate n slight modification, the Jformer being section on the line 8 8 of Fig. 9.
Referringr to the drawings it will loe Seen that the hleiik from which the box is formed comprises n bottoni section A of rectangular forni, iront side well inclm'ling two sections il, ll'. divided oy e score 7)., a rear side C seperated luy :.1 score c from the top, und end :ind rover members which will he more particularly described hereinafter.
The liront and rear side sections E, C, are provided :it lioth ends with similar extensions l), E, seperated from the seid side wall sections hy suitable scores d, c, ind in one edge of each of said extensions is rornied e notch, (Z, c', whereby seid end sections l), E, niej/'loe interlocked when the sides C, i), ere turned into position at right :ingles to the bottoni and toward each other.
The liottom section is seperated by cores o troni two extensions each comprisng two sections l?, il", separated by o score in assembling the nos the end sections l5, nre lient along the score and then turned shout the scores a so :is to extend over the up.. iding end members i). l, eiter vhieli the trontsnlc section. B is hotly of the box. A teh F2 is out from each seetion F so that tabs on the cover, es hereinter more particularly described, may he introduced between the overlapping end members D, E, or hetdreen seid members D, E and the section l?. A
The cover of the bos comprises main sections H, H', seperated hy a score E.; similar end sections each including members l', separated by continuations of the score L, and seperated fromthe body of the cover hy scores i; and n front edge member H2, the ends of which are divided from the body thereof by scores if which are substantially score It* in elineinent with the scores separates the 'front edge member H2 and the cover section H. Furthermore, each end section of the top or c ver is provided with n teli or projection K separated from the ends by scores lli. The end sections of the cover are adapted to loe folded on the lines of the scores e', i", to lie against either the inner or outer surface of' the cover and the lutter and the overlapping end sections con then he bent on the line of thescore f'L to occupy the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4 or that shown in Fig.
Yln folding the cover into the position shown in Fig. 2, the front edge member H2 is turned inwardly so that it `will extend hori'fzontslly, the ends Elf* thereof being bent downwardly so that they pass through the apertures formed in the end sections F', hy cutting the tabs F2, end into the space between the end sections D, E, or between the latter and the end sections F. Notches ha are preferably provided in the members H3 so that when the parts are positioned as est described smid sections H3 will he locked to the adjacent end of the hody of the box by reason of portions of the forward edges of the apertures foi-ined loy 'cutting' the tabs lli entering seid notches.
in folding' the top into the position shown in Fig. the section E thereof is turned n the score line h. in the opposite direction rom that in which it Wes turned in assuniinnr the 'form shown in Figs. 2- end and the edge member Y2 lies against the outer surface of tie rear side C, theends H3 eX- tending` forward between the end sections tl ..e cover or t'. 1.
of the box is so positioned that it forms an upwardly extending display surface, corresponding in area to the section H or H of the blank, which display surface is securely held at such an angle to the body of the box as to permit tents without having an unduly or unde sii-able high extension at the rear. That is, the upward extension on which, if desired, suitable advertising or display matter may be arranged, is of less height than the width of the box.v This is of considerable importance in many instances Vas it enables the box to.be arranged in front of other articles on a counter or shelf Without concealing the articles in rear thereof. lVith the parts arranged as in Figs. 2 and 4 it will be seen that the front surface of the top section H which as described is intended to receive suitable advertising or display printing is the outer surface 0f the blank or the same surface thereof as forms the outer faces of the bottom, sides and end walls. This is of practical importance as the material from which such boxes are commonly made is as a rule provided with a better nishor surface on one face than on the other; and thearrangementparticularly illustrated in the figures referred to enables all of the printing to be'done at a single operation and provides for such printing being upon the better finished face orsu'face of the blank. However, the parts may be arranged as shown in Fig. 5 and by this arrangement thc display-siuface is practically entirely in rear of the box so that no portion of the contents thereof is :oyered by the top. i
lVhen the parts are arranged, as shown in F 2, the tabs F2 will extend vertically so as not to project beyond the end walls of the box or in any way mar the neat appearance thereof. utility as by means thereof a slight separation of the end members of the box may be effected to assist in inserting the cover tabs H3.
lt is not necessary that the cover inembers H3 extend through the openings formed in cutting the tabs F2. lf desired the cover can be positioned substantially as shown in Fig. 2, the member ll2 being in rear of the tabs F2, which serve to hold thc top in the desired bent form, and the ineinbcrs H-nl extending vertically against the inner faces of the ends of the box. 0r again, as shown in Figs. S and i), tongues .Ti may 1ne cut from vthe end sections F members ll positionedbetween them and the inner surfaces of the sections ll" to hold the top in the desired position.
The improved box may, if desired, be utilized as a shipping container, as shown in lligs. and 7. il/hen arranged for such use the member H2 may be positioned over free inspection of the con- Said Atabs are of practical and the cov er the outer face of the side B with its ends H3 extending over the ends of the box and held in position by the cover end sections I, the tabs K extending beneath the bottom ofthe box to which they may be secured by paste or other suitable means. 0r said member H2 can be positioned to contact with the inner surface of the front se@ tion B with the parts H3 bearing against the inner faces of the ends of the box.
It will be seen-that by the construction described the ends and the front wall of the box are of double thickness, the ends in fact having four thicknesses of material, so that a. strong and substantial box may be produced from relatively lightweight material. The blanks can be shipped in fiat form and readily assembled or, as previously explained, the parts may be arranged to provide a completely closed `package or Icontainer.. Also it will be evident that as regards some of the 'features of theinvention the form and manner of scoring the blank to produce the bottom, well as the manner of connecting these parts, may be varied from that illustrated.
