CARDING-MACHINE.
Application filed March 23, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK GAnNIss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerset, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in carding-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to carding engines; and it consists of certain devices for stripping the flats and maintaining a uniform distance between the stripping comb and the flats, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of portions of a carding machine provided with stripping devices according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the stripping devices at one side of the machine, showing a portion of the carrier disk in section.
The machine is provided with a supporting frame 2, and 3 is a shaft journaled in the frame. A disk t is provided at each end. portion of the shaft 3 for carrying the flats 5. As the devices are alike on both sides of the machine the illustration and description will be confined to one side. The flats 5 are provided with suitable wires or carding material (5, and they are articulated together or connected by a chain in any approved way and are driven by the disks and the shaft 8. All of the above mentioned parts are of any approved construction.
In carrying out this invention, a guide bar 8 is pivoted at one end by a pin 10 to a stationary support, such as a bracket 9 secured to the frame 2. The free end portion of the guide bar 8 is pressed against the projecting end portions ofthe flats, radially of the shaft 3, by means of a spring 12. This spring is secured between the frame and the comb-bar 15 which engages with a forked carriage 14: which rests on the guide bar 8. The stripping comb 13 is carried by the combbar or comb-stock 15, which is arranged opposite the flats in the usual manner.
The comb-bar 15 has a hole 17 in each projecting end portion, and 18 is a pin secured to a roelcsliaft 19 and engaging with the hole 17. The rock-shaft is oscillated by any Specification of Letters Patent.

approved means, so that the carriage slides up and down longitudinally of the guide bar 8. The pin 18, as shown, is smaller in diameter than the hole 17, or it is otherwise connected with the comb bar, so that the comb-bar can slide back and forth in contact with the guide bar 8 and in a straight line. In this manner the stripping comb is held at a uniform distance from, and slides parallel to, the carding material or wires on the flats, and never comes in contact with them as this distance is not affected by any slackness in the chains, due to wear, nor by the accumulation of dirt or waste material between the flats and the disks which carry them.
The position of the comb-bar 15 in the forked portion 16 of the carriage is regulated by means of a screw 20 which passes through a hole in the comb-bar and is screwed into the carriage 14-, a nut 21 being provided on the screw for bearing against the rear side of the comb-bar. The comb-bar can be set at any preferred distance from the flats by packing 22 placed between it and the carriage.
lVhat I claim is:
l. The combination, with the flats of a carding engine, of a stationary support, guide bars pivoted at one end to the said support with their free end portions bearing on the end portions of the flats, forked carriages slidable on the guide bars, a combbar engaging with the forked portions of the carriages, driving devices for reciprocating the comb-bar and its carriages longitudinally of the guide bars, and means for pressing the comb-bar toward the flats.
2. The combination, with the flats of a carding engine, of pivoted guide bars the free end portions of which bear on the end portions of the flats, forked carriages slidable longitudinally on the guide bars, an oscillating comb-bar engaging with the forked portions of the carriages, screws provided with nuts for adjusting the position of and retaining the comb-bar in the forked carriages, and means for pressing the combbar toward the flats.
