UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ROBERT S. B. THORNTON, OF PAWTUOKET, RHODE ISLAND;
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOL-COMBING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,805, dated December 4, 1877 application filed July 30, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. B. THORN- TON, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Wool-Oombing which is especially applied to the machine known as the Noble wool-combing machine.
The nature of my, invention consists in an endless feed-apron applied to flanged pulleys, which are adjustable substantially as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a top view, showing the apron applied to its adjustable pulleys. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter E designates a driving-shaft,'on which are keyed a driving-belt pulley, F, and a flanged pulley, G. The lower end of the shaft E is stepped on the upturned end of a longitudinally-slotted base-piece, B, which is secured by a thumb-screw, a, to the foundation A.
The upper part of shaft E is journaled in a bar, 0, which is longitudinally slotted and adustably secured to a bracket, D, by means of athumb-screw, by The bracket D is slotted to receive through it the thumb-screws a b, and by means of the screw to this bracket is adjustably secured to the base-piece B and the foundation A.
H H are two flanged pulleys, which have their journal-bearings in two curved horizontal pieces, J J, which are secured to a standard, K, by means of thumb-screws c c. The standard K is adjustably secured to the foundation A by means of a thumb-screw, d. The thumb-screws c 0 pass through vertical slots made through the standard K, so that when these screws are loosened the pieces J J, with their pulleys H H, can be adjusted up or down.
It will be observed, from the foregoing description, that the three pulleys G H H around which the endless apron passes are adjustable with relation to each other, so that the belt or apron I can be tightened at pleasure, or removed when necessary.
In the machine to which my invention is applicable thefiber from the comb is compressed between the drawing-off rollers, and conveyed by endless belts passing around them, from the circle of teeth on the comb to the can or other receptacle that may be provided.
Thus it will be seen that it is important to have the pulleys adjustable, as described, so that the aprons can be made to run parallel to each other where the wool is fed between them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with endless belt, carried by the pulleys G H H, of the longitudinallyslotted pieces B O and brackets D, the former secured adjustably upon the latter, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ROBERT S. B. THORNTON.
