BED-SPRING rABRIc' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1915.
Application filed July 20, 1914. Serial N 0. 851,970.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GARY B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at in the county of Cook and State of have invented a new and useful lllIlOlS of which the following Bed-Spring Fabric, is a specification.
The device formingthe subject matter of this application is a bed spring fabric, and one object of the invention is to provide a novel means whereby the cross links will be prevented from moving longitudinally of the strands of the fabric, each link, at the same time, affording a pivotal mounting for an adjoining link.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a spring bed, connections between the strand portions of the bed, which connections are held against moving longitudinally of the strands, by clenching firmly upon the strands, some part of the connection.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
IVith the above and other objectsin view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows in top plan, a spring bed fabric constructed in accordance with the present invention, parts being broken away; and Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the present invention, and referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, there is shown a support 1 in the present instance, but not of necessity, disclosed in the form of a cable which is bent upon itself, as shown at 3, to form a plurality of oppositely projecting loops, the'side portions of which define strands 2. The strands 2 are is pivoted.
connected by chains of links, the link be- Ing denoted by the reference character 4. The link 4 is fashioned from a single strip of metal, bent upon itself to form a loop 5 and to form approaching arms 6, the extremities of which are fashioned into hooks 7 The hooks 7 of one link receive the loop 5 of the next link. The hooks 7 extend around the strand 2 and are clenched firmly thereon, as indicated at 8, so that the hooks 7'cannot move longitudinally of the strand 2. The loop 5 of an adjoining link is pivotally mounted in the hooks 7, the end of the loop being in abutting relation to the strand 2 as indicated at 9. Thus, it will be seen that although the fabric will be flexible, owing to the pivotal mounting of the loops 5 in the hooks 7, the chains of links cannot move longitudinally of the strands 2, because the hooks 7 are clenched firmly upon the strands as shown at 8.
In order to complete the fabric, the loop of the terminal link at one side of the structure will be fashioned into a strand engaging hook 10, clenched upon the strand, as indicated at '11.
Having thus what is claimed is 1. A bedfabric comprising strands; and a chain disposed transversely of the strands, the chain comprising links, one end of each link being bent to form a hook which is clenched on a strand, the other end of the link being fashioned into an eye pivoted in the hook of an adjoining link and disposed in abutting relation to the strand wherewith is engaged the hook wherein the eye 2. A bed fabric comprising strands; a chain disposed transversely of the strands and comprising a plurality of U-shaped links, the free ends of the links being bent to form hooks which are clenched upon the respective strands, the loop of each link being pivoted in the hooks of an adjoining link.
3. A bed fabric comprising strands; a chain disposed transverselyof the strands and comprising a plurality of U-shaped links, the free ends of the links being bent described the invention,
to form hooks which are clenched upon the respective strands, the loop of each link being pivoted in the hooks of an adjoining link in abutting relation to the strand 5 wherewith said hooks are engaged.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
