Description

JoHN- w. SCOTT.- Improvement 'ih Sleigh-Br'akes., N0. 114,976, Patented May16,187`l.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. SCOTT, OF BROAD IMPROVEMENT IN TOP CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SLEIGH-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. EILL976, datell May 16, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. Scorr, of Broad Top City, in the county of Huntingdon, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleigh- Brakes; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto the letters of reference marked thereon, making apart of this speciication.
The nature of myvinvention consists in the construction and arrangement of a sleighbrake, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side View, and Fig. 2 is aplan view.
A represents the runners, and B the hind knees, of a sleigh. In front of the hind knees and bench C, connecting the same, is mounted a shaft or roller, D, having its bearings in eyebolts a ct, which pass through the ends of the bench, as shown. The shaft or roller D is provided with two arms, b b-one above each runner A-'-and in the outer ends of said arms are pivoted the bars E E, which pass through mortises made in the runners. Upon the end of the shaft D is a crank, d, which, by a rod, G, is connected with a lever, H, pivoted to the front bench or any other suitable point on the sleigh. It -will be noticed that these parts are so arranged that when the lever H is thrown down about horizontal the bars or brakes ESE will be raised up out of the ground, but by raising said lever the brakes are applied.V
Thus a person having a big load may sit on top of the same and have a cord attached to the lever, so as to readily raise the same and apply the brakes. i
The shaft or roller D may be placed in rear of the hind knees by reversing the eyebolts ct a, in which case the bars E will pass down through straps or stirrups h h, attached to the rear ends of the runners.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the shaft-D, eyebolts a, arms b, bars E, crank d, rod G, and lever H, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of February, 1871.
JOHN NV. SCOTT.
