To all who hi it may concern ichines and more particularly to that class of machines wherein endwise sliding type bars are employed.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide improved means for guiding the type bars in their movements toward and from the platen.
Another object is to provide improvements generally in the actuating mechanism for endwise movable type bars, whereby the printing mechanism may be operated with a minimum amount of friction and the various operative partsof the actuating mechanism may be kept in perfect alineinent.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the feat-pres ot' construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein are illustrated two oi the various possible embodiments of my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken from front to rear of a typewriting machine, the mechanisin constituting the invention being shown in. elevation; F 1g. 2 IS a similar new showing the position of the parts when the type form; Fig. 5 is a top plan view showing a portion or the bed upon which the type bars rest and the embodiment of the type bar guiding means illustrated in Fig. 4:; Fig. 6 is a rear 'VIQW of a portion of the guiding mechanism for the type bars disclosed in this embodiment of my invention; Fig. 7 is an enlarged View in plan of portion of the actuating mechanism for the type bars, and Fig. 8 is an end view thereof.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 a portion of the framework of the machine, said, framework supporting a bed upon, which the type bars rest and across which? they slide when they are projecting against; the platen. Bed 2, in the present instance,
is formed in two parts for convenience of assembly, the upper part being constituted by a plate 3 which is interposed in the immediate support of the type bars. A plate 4 is supported in the framework of the machine above plate 3 and is engaged by the upper edgespi the type bars. Plates 3 and 4, as will be seen, coiiperate to guide the type bars against vertical movements.
Referring now particularly to the embodiment of my invention illnstrated in 1* igs. 1' to 3 inclusive, 5 and 6 indicate, respectively, guide pins which are extended upwardly from plate 3, said guide pins being-set therein. Guide pins 5 and (3, as will he noted, are arranged in two sets or series disposed one behind the other, each series being arcuately arranged, and between adjacent pins of said series the type bars 7 are adapted to slide, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the guide pins engaging the. sides of the type bars adjacent their lower edges. Extending downwardly from plate i .in the present instance, is another series of similar guide pins 8 between adjacent pins oi which are received the type liars and which engage the sides otthe type bars adjacent their up per edges. Each of the type bars 7, in the present instance, is composed of an upper bar 9 and a lower bar 10 arranged in parallel relation, said bars being connected with their front and middle portions by cross- )ieces ll and 12 respectivel" arran ed at a A ,l? a

The type head is shown at web being formed integral with the member and, in the present instance, carries three types which cooperate with a platen located in front of a paper rollsaid latter parts being shown conventionally at 15 and 16, 1'espectively- 17 denotes a cam block which is positioned upon a ledge 18 formed upon the :t'ront wall of the machine, said block being adjnstably mounted thereon and held in fixed position by means of a clamp screw 20. Uneof these blocks 17 is provided for supporting each 2f the several actuating mechanisms emplo s-d for projecting the type bars to an impression. Block 17 in its forward ortion is bifurcated as shown, and swiveled between the bifurcated portions 21 and 22 thereof is a member 23 provided with a cam groove In order to strengthen member 23 and prevent the same from bending or buckling under the stress of writing, a strengthening web is provided, as at25, said 23 and arranged adjacent the cam groove thereof. A double link 26 straddles this cammember and is pivotall attached thereto as at 27, the other end 0 said link stradoiling the type bar and being. pivotally' at.- tachedthereto at 28 intermediate the ends of the middle cross-piece 11. At this point, it may be noted that between the ends of the two series of guide pins 6 and 8 a space is provided to accommodate link 26 when the same is projected forward to carry the type bar to impression. 30 denotes a double bell-crank lever Whichstraddles the bi- .furcated portion of block 17 and is pivoted thereto at. 31. One arm of said lever is provided with a roller 32 which is adapted to traverse the cam groove of member 23 and the other arm of said lever is connected with a link 33, which in turn is connected. with the key levers (not shown). It will be understood that when the key levers are depressed link 33 will be caused to swing bell-crank lever 30 to theposition shown in Fig. 2 ofthe drawings, thereby oscillating the cam member 23 and projecting the type bar against the platen, link 26 being received between the ends of the guide members.
In Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive, I have provided another form of guiding means for the type bars, which is constituted by toothed members or combs, two lower comb members 34 being let into the top plate 30f the bed and the other comb member 35 being supported by and depending from the top plate 4.

as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and are preferably beveled off as shown in 36 in Fig. 6. The type bars pass between adjacent teeth of the combs and are gulded thereby at three points, as in the embodiment of the invention first above described.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secu e by Letters Patent is 1. In a typewriting machine, the combi-' nation of a platen, an endwise slidingtype bar, upper and lower guides for said type bar, and lateral guides for the same which extend in opposite directions from said firstnamed guides and engage the type bar at either side thereof throughout its path of travel.
2. In a typew riting' machine, the combination of a platen, an endwise sliding type bar, actuatingmechanism therefor, a link connecting the actuating mechanism with the type bar, upper and lower guides forsaid type bar, and lateral guides for the same, said guides beingso disposed that said-link may pass between the ends thereof 120 when the type bar is projected to printing position.

5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, an endwise movable type bar, a bed upon which said type bar rests and upon which it slides in its movements toward and from the platen, a plate engaging the upper edge of the type bar, a plurality of pairs of guide pins extending upwardl'y from the bed and engaging the sides of the type bar near the lower edge thereof, and a pair of similar pins depending from said plate and engaging the side of the type bar near the upper edge thereof.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination ot a platen, an endwise slidable type said type bar rests and upon which it slides in its movements toward and from the platen, actuating mechanism for said type bar, a link connecting edge thereof, a space being provided between said actuating mechanism and the type bar, a plate engaging the upper edge of the type bar, a plurality of pairs of guide pins extending upwardly from said bed and en-. gaging the sides of the type bar near the lower edges thereof, and a pair of similar guide pins depending from said plate and engaging the sides of the type bar near the upper'edge thcrect, space being provided between the ends of said upper and lower guide pins for receiving said link when the type bar is projected toward the platen by the actuating mechanism.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, an endwise movable type bar, actuating mechanism therefor, a link connecting the actuating mechanism and said type bar, a bed upon which the type bar slides in its movements toward and from the platen, two pairs of guide pins extending upwardly from the bed and engaging the-opposite sides of the. type bar near the lower edge thereof, a plate engaging the upper edge of the type bar, and a pair of pins depending from said plate and engaging the sides of said type bar near the upper the'ends of said upper and lower guide pins for receirmg said link when the type bar is projected toward the platen.

In a type action, in combination, a type-bar, a block supported upon a relatively fixed portion of the framing of the machine, said block having a bifurcated portion, and an oscillatory cam member sWiveled in the bifurcated portion of said block and having a portion thereof in front of its pivot when in actuated position adapt ed to fit said bifurcated portion and prevent a lateral movement of said cam member.
11. In a' typewriting machine, the combination with slidable type bars, a bed upon which the type bars slide, a plate engaging the upper edge of said type bars and adapted to-guide the same, and av plurality of guide members projecting upwardly from said bed and downwardly from said plate between which said type and which form lateral guiding means therefor, said guide members being arouately disposed upon said bed and plate.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, endwise movable type bars and means for guiding said type bars in their movements from an to the platen, comprising a pair of spaced plates each of which engages the edges of the type bars, and guide members projecting from said plates, which engage the sides of the type bars adjacent their edges. said guide memplate.
