To all 207mm it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. BOYCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Printing andFolchng Newspapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing and folding apparatus.
The general purpose-of the invention is to provide in conjunction with full-speed printing mechanisms having plate cylinders two pages in circumference equipped with plates having columns circumierential to the cylinders and adapted to perfect on both sides of a continuously moving web all the main pages and supplement pages of a book-form paper including supplement, or a paper in sections including a supplement by means of one set and the same set of plates at each revolution of the plate cylinders, full-speed main cutting and collecting devices, a fullspeed supplementcutter and a former adapted to fold in one paper the page-for-plate matter printed by one set of plates, the sheets runningto said former including the oneleaf two page supplement sheet, being invariably printed by one set, and the same set of plates, the mechanism being so constructed and arranged that if one former is used to make the first fold the main cutting and collecting device and the supplement cutting device'will preferably run at fullspeed and always make two cuts for each revolution of the plate cylinders, and all the main cuts and supplement cuts will be assembled beforegoing over the former with the result that it is practicable to always get a paper of the desired number of pages from a single set of stereotype plates, what I mean is, two pages from two plates, four pages from four plates, sixpages from six plates, eight pages from eight plates, ten pages from ten plates, twelve pages from twelve plates, fourteen pages from fourteen plates, sixteen pages from sixteen plates, and so on. The old method "requires four stereotype plates to print a one-leaf vo page sheet; the present new and better Way re quires only two stereotype platesto printa one-leaf two page sheet for each former in use. i

book form without supplements, or page-for-plate papers in sections, each paper comprising one section with supplement and" another section without supplement; and likewise adapted to print both sides of a continuously moving full-speed web, or webs, a plurality of pages in width, cut the web, or webs, into sheets one-page long and a plurality of pages in width before slittingyslit said pluralpageovide sheets to form two-leaf main sheets and one-leaf supplement sheets and fold said two-leaf sheets with inserted oneleaf sheets to produce page-for-plate bookform papers including supplements, or to produce page-for-plate papers in sections each paper comprising one section with sup plement and another section without supplement; the parts being so constructed and arranged that one set, and only one set of plates prints a complete paper at each revolution of the plate cylinders; and to provide in coi-iperation with plate cylinders two pages in circumference and in width equal to the width of a plurality of pages plus margins and equipped with columns circumferential to the plate cylinders; means for associating the webs printed by the plate cylinders; means for slitting the webs; sideby-side formers or equivalent folders and back-to-back formers or equivalent folders adapted to make the first fold of sheets cut from the webs, or web-members; and means for assembling the first-folded sheets or sections running with their cut edges in the lead and folding the sections together in the second fold; to provide in conjunction with printing means two pages in circumference and in width equal to the width of two pages or amultiple of two pages; means for associating the webs, slitting the webs, cutting the main web-members into two-leaf sheets and the supplement web-member into oneleaf sheets; the mechanisms being in such re-- lation to each other and beingtimed to cooperate so that the supplement pages printed by plates occupying one-half-circumference of the supplement printing area will run toione former and supplement sheets tion of the plate 0 ing area will run to an opposite former, or to adelivery device in line with the former to which the first named supplement sheet runs.
The invention contemplates the use of full-speed webs and the mechanism is so constructed and arranged that when using full-speedwebs one set of six plates will print a six page paper at each revolution of the plate cylinders, one set of eight plates will print an eight page paper, one set of ten plates will print a ten page paper, one set of twelve plates will print a twelve page paper, and one set of fourteen plates will print a fourteen page paper at each revolulinders, and so on.
The arrangement of the plates on the supplement plate area as hereinafter described,
' in conjunction with the alternate run of the one-leaf sheets cut from a full-speed supplement web or web-member and m con unction with means for collecting the two-leaf main'sheets before making the first fold,
adapts the apparatus to produce papers with supplements, say ten page papers, or fourteen page papers, by means of a less number of plates on the supplement plate cylinders than have heretofore been used to produce the same product.
The invention primarily contemplates the use of full-speed printing couples a plurality of pages in width, two pages in circumference and equipped with plates having columns circumferential to the plate cylinders; a full-speed secondary cutter making two cuts for each revolution of the plate cylinders; from the secondary cutter in the first instance alternately in opposite directions; secondary slitters and switches positioned to cooperate with the secondary cutter; means for causing the cuts initially running divergently from the secondary cutter to change direction and run convergently toward the secondary slitters and switches; a delivery device positioned to cooperate with the secondary slitters and switches and receive discard sheets and a single former, or two opposite formers, positioned to cooperate with the secondary slitters, switches and delivery device. The recited mechanisms disposed in substantially the relation stated, and cooperating as described are effective to produce by means of a less number of decks than have hitherto been used, every product having a multiple of two pages, viz: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 1 1, 16, etc. pa ,..s, without skipping any product, that is to say without skipping from an eight-page product to a twelve-page product, or skipping from a twelve p'age to a sixteen-page product, and using only one set, and the same set of plates, for one paper, to print a complete paper at every revolution of the printing couplers; papers having a multiple of attendants necessary means for leading the cuts four pages have heretofore been produced without skip, but papers having a multiple of two pages always from one set, and the same set of plates with columns circumferential to the plate cylinders, without skipping any product, have not been produced prior to my invention.
I lay special emphasis on the fact that by using a reduced number of decks, as set forth, to produce a given product, the first cost of the machine capable of producing the product is reduced, the necessary number of stereotyped plates is reduced, the-number of to operate the machine is reduced, and the general cost of operation is reduced.
This application relates back to my application #336,856, Apparatus for printing and folding papers, filed October 1, 1906, and upon which U. S. Patent #974,231, was granted to me November 1, 1910.
Under the mode of operation set forth in the present application there is alternate run of the full-speed one-leaf sheets cut from the supplement web, or web-member, and it is therefore practicable to insert every second one-leaf sheet with the two-leaf sheets running from one deck and collected, so that every complete paper may include two collected two-leaf main sheets and a one leaf insert sheet.
The described arrangement of the plates on the supplement plate cylinders inconjunction with the alternate run of the sheets cut from the supplement web or from the supplement web-member of a composite web, in case the two-leaf main sheets are collected before making the first fold, enables me to produce papers with insert sheets from a less number of plates than have heretofore been used to produce the same product. By a composite web I mean a web comprising the matter of main pages and the matter of sup plement pages. If a supplement is required, one deck of either section of the apparatus may be usedto print supplement pages exclusively on a one-page-wide supplement web, or web-member, or on a two-page-wide supplement web, or wel')-1nember, or may be used to print supplement pages on a onepage-wide member or a two-pagc-wide member of a composite web; or may be used to print pairs of supplement pages alternating with pairs of main pages on a two- The be two pages wide and page's wide and have on eachha e on each side a pair of main pages alterof supplement pages and main pages as shown in Fig. 25.
The prior practice has been to use one pair of plate cylinders a plurality 'of pages in width and two pages in circumference and equipped with plates occupying the width of one page on the plate cylinders and operating at half-speed to print supplement pages exclusivel the product being two two-page supplen'ient sheets for each revolution of the printing couples. i l utilize one pair of plate cylinders two pages in circumference and a plurality of pages in width operating at full-speed, to print on one web the matter of two twopage supplement sheets and the matter of one or more twoleaf, four-page main sheets at each revolution of the full-speed printing couples. Inder the old practice the two two-page supplement sheets printed by the plates occupying part of the width of and extending around the plate cylinders are successively inserted at half-speed with the main sheets of two papers running in succession to the same folder. llnder the new and better practice the supplement sheets run at fullspeed and one two-page supplement sheet is inserted with the two-leaf main sheet or sheets running to .one folder and forming part of one paper and the other two-page supplement sheet may be inserted withthe two-leaf sheet or sheets going to another folder and forming part of another paper, or may be discarded and dropped on to the delivery device.
In the art as practised prior to my iux'ention, it has been common to print by means of twelve plates mounted on two plate cylinders two pages in circumferenci and constituting two sets of plates with six plates in each set, two siX- nige papers for each revolution oi" the printing couples, but it has not been possibleunder the old i'uethod to produce at each revolution of the print ing couples one six page paper from one set of six stereotype plates carried on two plate ,:ylindcrs. Similarly it has hitherto been possible to produce two tens at each revolu tion of the plate cylinders by means of two sets of plates carried on two plate cylinders and each set con'ririsingtcn plates. 1 am the first to produce tcn'pagcs from one set of ten plates on two plate ing on a iillli SpQ-fitl web to print a complete paper at each revolution of the plate cylinders; or to produce fourteen pages from one set of fourteen plates. or eighteen pages from one set of eighteen plates, and a on. operating on full-speed web to produce a complete paper at every revolution of the printing couples.
Another valuable feature of the present invention. is, that operating one deck and using a full-speed composite web it is practicable to produce ten-page papers printed Cylinders are represented by circles; gears are represented by the pitch lines of the gears, and formers, slitters, cutters, tapes,

In case specific constructions are not shown it is to be understood that the constructions are such as are commonly used for the purpose described.
In order to clearly set forth the relation and cooperation of the different mechanisms comprised in the apparatus as a whole it is necessary to treat the several printing mechanisms, cutter mechanisms and folder mechanisms of the double-ender apparatus, as separate units and to this end the reference characters designating like parts in the several views have exponents, prime second third :0, y, etc. to distinguish one from the other. That part of the ap paratus including the left hand printing couples of all the decks and the left hand cutter and folder mechanisms will be designated as the left hand section of the apparatus; and that part of the apparatus including all the right hand cutter and folder inechanisinswill be designated as the right hand section of the apparatus.
