jaws A and B are placed around the cord which is to be severed, and pressure is applied to the levers A and B so as to movethe jaws toward each other. The movement of the jaws toward each other causes the 00- operating serrated crushing surfaces a and b to crush and lacerate the interposed portion 0 of the cord, while a further movement of the. jaws together causes the cooperating cutting edges a and b to sever the cord, as shown in Fig. 2. A further movement of the jaws toward each other causes the pressure block D to yieldingly compress the portion 0 of the cord between the longitudinal serrations on said block and the serrations on the opposing surface of the shoulder a The pressure exerted upon the portion 0 of the cord is limited by tension of the spring E, so that only a suflicient pressure is exerted upon the cord by block D to compress the same without crushing or lacerating it.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that I have invented an improved emasculator in which the cord will be crushed and lacerated at a point adjacent the severed end of the cord, and in which the cord above the lacerated portion thereof, will be compressed so as to restrict the flow of blood thereto and thereby protect the crushed portion of the cord from the pressure of the blood which would tend to open the crushed portion and produce a hemorrha e.
It will be further observed that in my improved emasculator only a suflicient pressure is exerted upon the cord above the crushed portion thereof to restrict the flow of blood without crushing or lacerating same.
lVhile I have described more or less in detail the specific form in which I have illustrated my invention as embodied, yet I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form, proportion of parts, and substitution of equivalents, as circumstances may require or as may be deemed expedient.
I claim:
1. An emasculator comprising relatively movable jaws having cooperating cutting edges and relatively yielding compressing surfaces spaced apart from the cutting edges, and means limiting the compressing movement of the compressing surfaces.
2. An emasculator comprising relatively movable jaws having cooperating cutting spaced apart from the crushing surfaces.
3. An emasculator comprising relatively movable jaws having cooperating cutting edges, one of said jaws having a laterally projecting shoulder, a pressure block yieldingly supported upon the other jaw in position to cooperate with said shoulder in exerting a limited pressure, and adjustable means for varying the limit of pressure between the block and shoulder.
a. An emasculator comprising relatively movable jaws having cooperating cutting edges, one of said jaws having a laterally projecting shoulder, a pressure block yieldingly supported upon the other jaw in position to cooperate with said shoulder, a spring secured to said second jaw and bearing upon said block to resist the yielding thereof, and means for limiting the movement of said pressure block toward said shoulder.
5. An emasculator comprising relatively movable jaws one of which has a longitudinal slot through which the other reciprocates, said jaws having cooperating cutting edges at one side of said slot, a laterally projecting shoulder on said first jaw on the opposite side of said slot from the cutting edge, and. a bodily movable pressure block yieldingly supported upon the second jaw in position to cooperate with said shoulder in exerting a yielding pressure after said cutting edges have passed each other into overlapped position.
6. An emasculator comprising relatively movable jaws one of which has a slot through which the other reciprocates, the said jaws having cooperating cutting edges at one side of' said slot and cooperating crushing surfaces at' the other side of said slot, a laterally projecting shoulder on said first jaw spaced apart from the crushing surface thereof, and a pressure block yieldingly supported upon said second jaw above the crushing surface thereof to engage said shoulder after said crushing surfaces have passed each other into overlapped position.
In testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name.
