MINING-MACHINE.
To all 'whom t may concern.:
Be it lmown'that L CHARLES E. Davis, a
-I citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mining-Machines, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to mining machines, and has for its object to provide anew and improved machine of this description.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanyingl drawings, whereing Figure 1 is a plan View. of a mining machine embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine shown in Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, 'I have illustrated a mining machine. consisting of a frame 1, carrying a motor 2 and the controlling and feeding mechanism, and having projecting therefrom a cutter arm 3, about which moves a suitable cutter chain L provided with a series of cutters 5 that engage the material to be cut.
1n the use of the machine the cutters engage the material to be cut, as shown in Fig. 1 as they pass across the end of the cutter arm and along one side thereof, and
K the machine is moved laterally to feed the cutters forward. A flexible power transmitting device 6 is wound upon a drum 7 and passes about a pulley 8, and is then fastened to some fixed device 9. The drum 7 is connected with the motor 2 by means of the gear 10 on the shaft 1l, which engages teeth 12 on the interior of the drum. lt will thus be seen that by rotating the drum 7, so as to wind up the flexible power transmitting device 6, the machine will be moved toward the fixed device 9.
ln view of the resistance to the cutters of the material to be cut, Ait will be seen that the rear end of the machine will' be moved forward more rapidly than the forward end. Some suitable means is providedfor preventing the too rapid movement of the rear end of the machine. provide a second drum 13, which has wound upon it a flexible power transmitting device 14, connected sto a fixed devicel on the other side of the machine from the xed device 9. Some means must/The provided for Specification of Letters Patent. v

controlling the drum 13 to ccntrol the .unfl winding of the flexible power transmitting device in such manner as to keep the machine in proper position as it is ,fed toward Patented Aug itil, tl
the face to be out. In the present drawing I have shown a preferred construction for this purpose. The drum 13 is fastened to a sleeve 16 mounted on the shaft 17 (see Fig. 3). l?. xed to the sleeve 16 is a beveled gear 18. Loosely mounted on 'the sleeve is ane5 other beveled gear 19. Mounted between the beveled gears 18 and 19 is a gear 20. Re tatably mounted in openings in this gear are the beveled pinions 21,22, said. pinions being held in place by the pins 23. The T0 gear 20 engages a pinion 2e on the shaft 25, said pinion being connected with a notched controlling wheel 26 provided with a series of notches 27. Connected with the beveled gear 19 is .a gear 28 which engages gear 75 29 on theV shaft 30 adapted to be connected with the motor. Associated with the wheel 26 is a controlling arm Slprovided with a projection 32 adapted to fit in one of the notches 27. vided with a handle 33, so that it can be controlled by hand. The arm 31 is pivctedat 3ft and the lower end thereof is ccnnected with the rod or connecting piece 35 pivoted This arm is preferably-preV so to the lever 36. This lever is pivoted to tliess frame at the point A37. Rigidly connected.' with the lever 36 and extending at an angle therefrom is an engaging piece 38 which end gages the flexible power transmitting device 6, and which has a projecting part 39 which so projects below said flexible power transmitting device. Associatedwith the ccnnecting piece 35 is a spring lli), whichengages a stop 4:1 on the frame f the machine,
and a stop 4:2 on the connecting piece, so es that when the pressure of the flexible power transmitting device upon the part 38 is reparts are returned to their normal position.
l have described in detail one formof ap wfparatus for carrying the invention into practice, but it is of course evident that the form, construction and arrangement of the parts may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The use and operation'of my invention are as follows: When the machine is in operu ation the tiexible power transmitting device 6 is fastened tothe fixed device'9, and the flexible power transmittingkdevice 1e is fas- 110 tened to the fixed device i5. The drum'? is the rotated so as 'to feed the machine laterally against the material to be cut. rThe power transmitting device il on the drum 13 retards the movement oit the rear end of the machine so as 'to keep the machine in proper position. rlhe drum 13 is rotated by its connection with the motor so as to pay out 'the flexible power transmitting device to permit the proper feeding of the machine. If the flexible power transmitting device 1l: holds the machine back to too great an eX- tcnt, the .machine will be moved to an inclined position with the cutter arm ahead. The flexible power transmitting device 6 then moves the lever 36 so as to rock about its pivotal point. This causes the connecting piece to be moved toward the rear so as to disengage the projection 32 from the notch in the wheel 2.6, as shown in dotted lines rin Fig. 2. 'The wheel 2G is then released and is tree to revolve, thus permitting pinion 2t to revolve and gear 20 to revolve. rhis gear il) is normally held against rotation when the wheel 26 is stationary. The drum is now released from its connection with the motor, and the farther feeding ot Yiachine moves the rear end around to its proper position, whereupon the lever 36 and connecting piece are moved by means of spring 40, so to move the projection into one oil the notches 27 and stop thewheel 26, thus again connecting the drum 13 with the motor. rllhe retarding device is then again put into operation. lt will thus be seen that both the feeding mechanisni and the re: rding mechanism are directly connected with the motor, so as to be operated thereby; that means are provided for rendering the retarding mechanism more or less inellective or inoperative; that this means may be automatimor not, as desired; and that complete and. accurate control of the feeding of the machine is secured.
