, and the invention particularly has for its object to provide a lamp of this character wherein means are contained for cutting ofi more or less of the projected light beam, when desired, to prevent blinding pedestrians or others coming from the opposite direction.
In our application filed March 24, 1914:, Ser. #826,959, we have disclosed a lamp structure which is adapted for the purposes but in that case no provision was made for special operating mechanism for projecting or retracting the light intercepting member (a shield or series of shields), whereas the present invention especially has for its ob- 'ect to provide electro operative mechanism for effecting the movement of the shield or shields. I
Generically, the invention provides a lamp having an illuminant and a reflector and a.
movable shield or light intercepting member which is designed to be projected to intercept the light beam in whole or in part, and
an electric motor driven connection with the shield for projectingor retracting the same .at will, together with circuit breakers'in the motor circuit which are designed to cooperate with the shield whereby to automatically open the motor circuit as the shield reaches the limits of its movement.
Again, provide a combined side and head-light which embodies the foregoing special features.

The door 4 is hinged to the body 1, as at 5, and is pin-connected at 6, or otherwise suitably secured so as to be susceptible of being opened, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when it is desired to gain access to the interior of the body 1. The door 4, when the lamp is de- 12 is the side light reflector that is secured over the window opening 8 within the door 4, and is rigidly supported thereby.

The mount 14 has separable connection with the fixed terminals 15, whereto the circuit wires 25 from the ordinary dash switch (not shown) are connected, it being understood that the terminal block 15 is rigidly secured within the cap 16 of the housing 1. The cap 16 is pivoted at 17 and is connected at 6 with the upward extension of the door 4. The door has a main opening 18 suitably glazed at 19 prevent access of water tothe interior of the lamp. The glass 19 is held in a suitable frame 26 which is hinged at 27 and secured at 28 so as to be susceptible of being opened up to permit access to the reflector 21 which is also held in place by the frame 26 when closed. The reflector 21 carries the usual bulb mount 22 on which the illuminant bulb 23 is carried and to the terminals of which the current wires 24 from the dash switch (notshown) are connected. It should be understood that the current supplied to the illuminants 13-23 is supplied in the usual manner, and the manner in which the current is supplied to these illuminants forms no part of our present invention and is therefore not illustrated in detail.
29 is the shield or light beam interceptor which may be composed of a skeleton frame and more or less opaque bodies (as in our previous application before referred to) or it may be composed of a single body, if desired. The shield 29 is pivoted at 30 and is provided with a rack 32and a flange 31, the flange being provided to close the opening in the front of the door 4 through which the shield is adapted to be projected when the shield is retracted The rack 32 has a heel 33 to cooperate with the lower circuit breaker 52 and a projection 34 to cooperate with the upper circuit breaker 44 ina manner hereinafter more fully explained.

The plate is electrically connected to the terminal 46, while the terminal 47 is electrically connected to the yieldable contact 49 which is provided with a head 50 to engage the con-- tact 45 under the action of the spring 51.
The lower circuit breaker consists of two rigid blocks 53-56, in one of which a rigid contact 54 is held and in the other a yieldable contact 57 is mounted. The con- ;tact 54 has a head 55 that is adapted to be of the contact 57 I engaged by the head 58 under the action of the spring 51.
The heads 58-50 are adapted to project into the path of movement of the heel 33 and the projection 34, irrespective of the 'rack 32, whereby when the shield 29 is retracted as shown in Fig. 2, the heel 33 will depress the head 58 to open the circuit between the heads 5558, while the circuit between the heads 4550 remains closed, but when the shield is projected to its limit, the member 34 will engage the head 50 to open the motor circuit between head 50 and plate 45, as will be clearly explained.

The motor 40 is also electrically connected with the head 58 of the lower circuit breaker 52, while the head 55 is electrically connected with the contact 62, as diagrammatically illustrated inFig. 8, the switch arm 63 of the switch 59 is electricallyconnected with the battery 64, which battery in turn is connected to the motor, it being understood that the motor wiring and connections are such that when current is passed through the motor via the upper circuit breaker, the motor will turn in one direction while when the current is passed to the motor via the lower circuit breaker, the motor will turn in the opposite direction.
So far as described, when it is desired to. project the shield into the beam of light, the operator movesthe switch 63 onto the contact 61, which permits the current to flow through the motor in a direction'that will cause the worm 35 to turn and move the light from the position shown in Fig. 2 toward the position shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
Should the operator desire to move the shield only a slight distance, he makes the contact between (53 and 61 of short duration, but if he desires to project the light the full distance, or should he forget to open breaker 44, which is the circuit again at the contact 61, as soon as the projection 34 engages the head 50 of the upper circuit breaker, the said head will be pressed back to open the motor circuit at the upper circuit. breaker, it being understood, of course, that the spring 51 is preferably light enough so as not to move the shield backwardly and again close the circuit, or in other words, is not sufliciently strong to overcome the weight of the shield.
When it is desired to retract the shield, the operator moves the switch 63 onto contact 62, whereupon the motor is reversed,
and as soon as the heel 33 engages the head 58 of the lower circuit breaker, the motor circuit will be automatically opened at that place.
Should the shield .be only partly retracted, both circuit breakers will be closed and the shield can be moved farther in either direction according as contact is madeof which may be the same as that disclosed in our preceding application hereinbefore referred to, the shield and doorbeing so designed that the shield may be telescoped A entirely within the tubular door structure.
In this form of the invention also the lowermost shield section (when the shield is made up of several sections) is provided with the rack 67 with which the worm 68 on the motor shaft 69 meshes, the motor 70 being located in an extension housing 71 carried by the door 65 and the extension housing 71 may be provided with a door 72 by means of which access to the motor may be had for purposes of adjustment or repair. The circuit opening. switches 52 and 44 respectively are mounted within the door structure and operated by the projection-73 on the gear segment 67. In this form of the invention, it will be observed, the necessity for separable connections, used in the preceding form, may be dispensed with. This latter form of the invention is especially adapted for attachment to the ordinary lamp by simply removing the old door and substituting the new doorv with its attached parts. 1
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, it is thought the complete construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.
IVhat we claim is:
1. The combination, in a head or search lamp, with the lamp housing; a shield associated with the housing for intercepting the beam of light; a rotary electric motor as.-..
sociated with and supported by the lamp; operative connections between said motor and said shield for effecting the movements of the shield in both directions; an operator manipulated controlling device for the-motor; and means for arresting the operation of the motor as the shield reaches thehmits of its path of movement.
2. The combination with a head or search lamp and a shield mounted to be moved into and out of the beam of light; of a motor for moving said shield. into and'out of the beam of light, means for arresting the action of said motor as the shield reaches erator manipulated means for effecting the :action of said motor on said shield.
3. In a lamp construction, a lamp housing, a reflector in said housing, an illuminant in said housing, a hood or shield car ried by said housing, and an electric motor and operating connections between said motor and said hood or shield for moving said shield to intercept the light beam at will, an operating circuit for the motor, and circuit breakers for opening the motor circuit. at predetermined times.

7. A lamp housing, a door thenefor, a refiector and an illuminant carried by the 'door, a light beam intercepting shield also carried by said door, a motor, power transmitting connections between the motor and the shield, operator controlled means for effecting the action of said motor, said means comprising an electric .circuit, and means for interrupting said circuit as said shield reaches the limit of its projection.
8. A lamp housing, a door therefor, a re-,
fiector and an illuminant carried by the iso door, a light beam intercepting shield also carried by said door, a motor, powe transmitting connections between the motor and the shield, operator controlled means for effecting the action of said motor, said means comprising an operator manipulated electric motor circuit.
9. A lamp housing, a door therefor, a reflector and an illuminant carried by the door,- a light beam intercepting shield also carried by said door, a motor,'power transmitting connections between the motor and the shield, operator controlledmeans for ef .of its path of movement.
10. Ina lamp, a housing including a bottom housing section and a top housing section separably mounted'onsaid bottom section, said sections being open at the front, a.
door fitted over said opening, a window carried by said door, an illuminant within said housing, a shield normally lying retracted in said housing and adapted to be projected therefrom to intercept the beam of light, a
motor and a power transmitting connection between said motor and said shield.
11. In a lamp, a housing including a bottom housing section and'a top housing section separably mounted on said bottom section, said sections being open at the front, a
door fitted over said opening, a window carried by said door, an illuminant within said housing, a shield normally lying retracted in said housing and adapted to be projected therefrom to intercept the beam of light, a motor, a power transmitting connection between said motor and said shield, said connection comprising a rack on said shield, and a gear driven by the motor and meshing with said rack.
12. In a lamp, a housing including a bottom housing section and a top housing section separably mounted on said bottom section, said sections being open at the front, a door fitted over said opening, a window carried by said door, an illuminant within said housing, a shield normally lying retracted in said housing and adapted to be projected therefrom to intercept the beam of light, a motor, a ower transmitting connection between sai motor and said shield, said shield being 'pivotally mounted on said door, and said power transmitting connection comprising a rack on said shield, a worm mounted on said door and meshing with said rack, and a connection between said worm and said motor.
13. In a lamp, a housing including a bottom housing section and a top housing section separably mounted on said bottom section, said sections being open at the front, a door fitted over said opening, a window carried by said door, an illuminant within said housing, a shield normally lying retracted in said housing and adapted to be projected therefrom to intercept the beam of light,
a motor, a power transmitting connection I between said motor and said shield, an oper ator manipulated circuit for said motor, circuit interrupters in said circuit, and means for operating said interrupters by the movements of said shields at predetermined times.
14. In a lamp, a housing including a bottom housing section and a top housing section separably mounted on said bottom section, said sections being open at the front, a door fitted over said opening, a window carried. by said door, an illuminant within said housing, a shieldnormally lying retracted in said housing and adapted to be projected therefrom to intercept the beam of light, a motor, a power transmitting connection between said motor and said shield, said con- .nection comprising a rack on said shield and a gear driven by the motor and meshing with said rack, an operator manipulated circuit for said motor, circuit interrupters in said circuit, and means for operating said interrupters by the movements of said shield at predetermined times.
15. In a lamp, a housing including a bottom housing section and a top housing section separably mounted on said bottom section, said sections being open at the front, a door fitted over said opening, a window carried by said door, an illuminant within said housing, a shield normally lying retracted in said housing and adapted to be projected therefrom to intercept the beam of light, a motor, a power transmitting connection between said motor and said shield, said shield being pivotally mounted on said door, said power transmitting connection comprising a rack on said shield, a worm mounted on said door and meshing with said rack, a connection between said worm and said motor,
an operator manipulated circuit for saidmotor, circuit interrupters in said circuit, and means for operating said interrupters by themovements of said shield at predetermined times.

In a lamp construction, the combination with a lamp housing and a door, of a shield normallv retracted from the beam of light and adapted to be projected into the beam of light, an electric motor. a gear connection between said motor and said shield for projecting and retracting the same, an operator manipulated electric circuit for operating said motor, and circuit breakers actuated by the movements of said shield for interrupting the motor circuit as said shield reaches the limits of its path of movement.
25. In a lamp construction, a lamp housing including a chamber. an illuminant in said housing anda shield in said chamber, a motor in said housing and cooperative connections between said motor and shield for raising and lowering said shield.

In a lamp construction, a lamp housing including an illuminant chamber, a shield carried by said housing, a motor carried by said housing for projecting and retracting said shield, an operator manipulated circuit for said motor, and circuit breakers operatively controlled by the movement of said shield for opening the motor circuit as the shield reaches the limits of its path of travel. 27. In a. lamp construction, the combination with a. lamp housing, of a shield nornially retracted from the beam of light and adapted to be projected into the beam of light,'an electric motor, power transmitting connections between said motor and said shield for projecting and retracting the same, an operator manipulated electric cir cuit for operating said motor, and circuit breakers for interrupting the motor circuit as said shield reaches the limits of its path of movement.
28.- In a lamp construction, a lamp housing including a chamber, an illuminant in said housing, a shield associated with the lamp and adapted to be projected into and out of the beam of light, a motor supported by said housing, and cooperative connections between said motor and said shield for actuating said shield.
29. The combination in a head or search lamp, of the lamp housing, a shield for in tercepting the beam of light emanating from said lamp housing, a reversible electric motor operatively connected with saidshield for effecting the movements of the shield in both directions into and out of the beam of light respectively, and means for automatically stopping the operation of said motor as said shield arrives at the limits of its path of movement.
