Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1915.
Original application filed November 12, 1913, Serial No. 800,475. Divided and this applicationifiled May 29,
1914. -Seria1No.841,754.
ToiaZZ @071 out it may concern,
Bait known that I, MioHA-EL Ke vin, a former. subjectofthe Emperor of Austria Hungary, who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in plows and the object of this improvement is to provide a simple and effectual device of the character described, the subject matter of this invention being a division of my pending application for improvements in plows, filed November 12, 1913, Serial No. 800,475.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lVith these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a plow embodying my invention, and Fig.2 is a side elevation of the same. i
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a frame 3 carrying two plows 4: secured to the frame in any approved manner such as indicated. The front end of frame 3 is adjustably secured to axle 5 and adapted to be moved vertically with respect to said axle by means of the screw 6 and guide 7 which are mounted in a substantially U-shaped member 8, the latter being secured to said axle. The axle 5 is supported by means of the front wheels 9 which are pivoted thereto in the manner indicated or in any conventional manner.
The parts described so far are of the ordinary gang plow construction and constitute no part of this invention.
This invention relates to the means for elevating and lowering the rear portion of the frame. I use a pair of parallel levers 10 and pivot them to the frame 3 as at 11. Between the lower ends of levers 10 is mounted a wheel 12 pivoted as at 13 and adapted to support the rear end of the plow frame. At the upper ends between said levers 10 is pivoted a connecting link 14.
The other end of connecting link 14: is pivoted to a manually operable lever .15. The
arrangement is such that upon swinging lever 15, lever 10 will be swung in a vertical plane to raise or'lower theplows andplow frame.
In order to lock theplow in elevated position I provide a spring catch 16 which is pivoted tothe pin 17 which forms the pivotal connection between connecting link 14 and theupper end of levers 10. A spring 18 is connected between the catch 16 and connecting link 14:, in the manner indicated to normally maintain the catch 16 in the position indicated in the drawing. The catch 16 carries a lug 19 which is normally held in contact with a pin 20 carried by the connecting link 14: to limit the movement of catch 16 toward the front end of the plow thereby maintaining said catch in operative condition. The upper face 21 of lever 16 is beveled so that in moving lever 15 from its dotted to its full line position as indicated in Fig. 2, a pin 22, carried by lever 15, will cause the catch 16 to swing until pin 22 engages the notch of catch 16. The spring 18 brings catch 16 to locking relation with pin 22 thereby locking levers 15 and 10 to hold the plow frame inelevated position. The parts indicated in dotted lines indicate the position such parts take during operation of the plow and the full lines indicate such parts in elevated or in the position in which the plow is adapted for transportation.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a plow frame; wheels supportingthe front end of said frame; a pair of parallel levers pivoted to the rear end of said frame and adapted to swing in vertical planes; a wheel journaled in the lower ends of said levers and adapted, with the latter, to support the rear end of the said frame; a lever frame; an adjustable connection between saidj'axle and said frame permitting of vertical movement of the latter; a wheel mounting pivoted at the rear end ofsaid frame; a wheel journaled in said mounting; a lever pivoted to said frame; a connecting link operatively connecting said lever with said mounting; a pin on said lever; and a spring catch pivoted on said mounting and adapted to engage said pin, substantially as described. I
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for 3. A device of the kind described comprising a plow'frame; Wheels supporting the front end of said frame; a wheel mounting pivoted to the rear end of said frame; a wheel journaled in said mounting; a lever connected with said mounting and adapted to swing the latter to move the rear end of:
said plow frame vertically; a pinextending laterally from said lever; and a spring catch pivoted to the upper end of said mounting and adapted toengage said pin to lock said lever and said mounting against pivotal movement and said plow frame in elevated position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
