To all whom itmag concern) Beit known that we, VALTER A. KILRAI and ANNE E; KIL AIN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga' and State of Ohio, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Shoe-Trees; and we do hereby declare the following to' be a full, clear, and exact description thereof. I

Our invention relates to shoe-trees and has. special reference towhat are known as adjustable shoe-trees. I

The object of our invention is to'forma cheap, simple and efficient shoe-tree, which can be made adjustable for different lengths of shoes, as well as one which will be ad: justable for shoes after they become worn or stretched, and one 'which can be sup; ported while the shoeis being. polished or shined;

To these ends our invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

To enable others skilled in the art: to which our invention appertains to construct and use our improved shoetree, we will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved shoe-tree showing the same applied to a bracket and in position for use with ashoe. Fig. 2 is a top-plan view of the tree. Fig. 3 is a view of the bracket.

Like symbols of referenceherein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawm The illustrated in the drawing 1 represents our improved shoe-tree, which has the usual front part or toe form 2 thereon for insertion in the front part of the shoe and is generally formed of wood or other suitable composition as may be desired.

Removably pivoted in the usual manner Within a vertical slot 3 in the front member 2 by the cotter-pin 4c, is the shank 5 formed of a thin metal plate, which is positioned vertically and provided with the teeth 6 on its lower edge.

At the rear of the shank-plate 5 are a series of holes 7, to one of which is removably pivoted the adjusting member 8 by means of a cotter-pin 9 passing through such hole,

Extending upwardly on the member is the handle or arm 11, which ;is provided with the ears or lugs 12 at its upper end for being adapted to engage withan attaching end a dependent on'a bracket 6 secured to a wall or' other support by means ofa w edging dovetailed connection between the said lugs and end when such lugs arecaused to engage said end in placing the tree 1v on said bracket by a downward movement of' the same. a Mounted on the handle 11 is the adjust ing lever 13, which is formed of thinplate metal and in ll-shape for extending around the shank-plate 5 by its arms 14:, so that the two rear endsll" on said arms can be pivoted to said handle by the pin 14 and the other or front end 14 connecting said arms engages with the serrations or. teeth 6 on said plate by the rear edge of said end.

Extending across and between the arms 14 on the lever 13 and adjacent the open ends 14 thereon are the lugs 15, which are adapted to form a bearing for one end 16 of a spring rod 16 which is connected at its opposite end to the pivot pin 14* between said lever and the handle 11, and said rod also extends around said pin on each side of said handle and forms a loop 16 de pending therefrom.

When the shoe-tree is desired to be used in a shoe, it will be evident that when the adjusting member 8 is adjusted on the shank 5 for the length of shoe to be applied by the pin 9 in the proper hole 7 in said shank, the front member 2 and heel portion 10 can be positioned in the shoe by pushing down on the handle 11 on the member 8, which will allow the end 1 1 on the lever 13 to ride over the teeth 6 on the shank so that when the said front member and heel portion have been placed in position in the shoe the tree will be thus held by said end engaging with one of said teeth. When it is desired to polish or shine a shoe thus held by the tree 1, the handle 11 can be readily and quickly connected by its lugs 12 to the end don the bracket 6, as above described, which will thus suspend said shoe and tree for the polishing or shining operation and enable such operation to be performed conveniently and comfortably, while the tree and shoe can be readily and quickly disengaged from the bracket 6 by raising the same up, so as to free said lugs from said end.

It will thus be seen that our improved shoe tree will be made in such a compact form as will enable its parts to be packed closely together for shipment or transportationby the device being capable of being taken apart and put into a small space The devlce is also capable of be ng attached to a' wall or other support, so as to hold the same in a convenient position and ready for use, while it is also capable of being adjustable for dili'erent sizesof shoes either when the'shoe is in its original or worn shape and when in positionin the shoe will be retained in its position by the locking of its parts. The device is also capable of being readily and quickly placed in position in the shoe as described and when it is desired to withdraw the same from the shoe the lever will be capable of being sprung down so as to release it from the shank, so that the device can then be pulled out of the shoe by its handle. v Various modifications and changes in the design and construction of our improved shoe-tree may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. v

, What we claim as our invention and "desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1, A shoe-tree comprlsing toe and heel members, a shank between said members and pivotally connected to the same, said shank Copies of this patent may be obtained for having serrations on its lower edge, a pawl lever pivotally connected at one end to the heel member and having a bifurcated end surrounding said shank arranged to hold said pawl-lever in a position to insure of its engagement with sa1d serratlons, and means for yleldably holding the pawl-lever against the serrations.

2. A shoe-tree comprising toe and heel members,a shank between said members and pivotally connected to the same, and a lever having two arms pivotally connected to said heel member, said arms fitting around the shank, and a connection between said arms arranged to engage said shank .on its lower edge to hold the tree in position.

A shoe-tree comprising toe and heel members, a vertically disposed plate between said members and pivotally connected to the same, said plate having serrations on its lower edge, and a lever having arms pivotally connected to said heel member, said arms fitting around the shank and having a connection at their free ends, said con-V nection being arranged to engage the serrations of the shank to hold the tree in position. v a Intestimony whereof, we the said WAL 'rna A.
