To all *whom it may concern: a
1 Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use fullmprovements in Surgical Appliances,
of which the followingis-a specification.- Y
My invention relates to surgical appli The object of the invention is to provide a device of this class that may be conveniently and quickly applied to a bed and patient,
and that shall be substantially universal in its applicability to the various forms of wood and metal bed .fiames in use.- f
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction,- combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the.
' accompanying drawing, and incorporated in the appended claim.
In thedrawing, Figure 1 is a side elevationof a bed with a patient thereon, and my invention appliedto same. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in elevation of my improved .device removed from'the bed.- Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig.- 2 and includes a section of the bed frame of the angle-iron type. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken substantially on "the line 4-4 in .Fig. 2. Fig.- 5. is an enlarged per; spective view of mywuniversal clampfor fastening the device to either of the various forms ofibedscommonlyin use. Fig. 6 is a perspective view representing nay improved foot-plate attached to a patients foot or bandage and a part of the 'cord connection i views.
body a'with a bandaged leg 5held extended with the weightof thestretehei'. Fig. '7' is an enlarged perspective view of the platei-tself.
In the several views 2-represents a bed, the spring and mattresssupporting frame of which is coinposecl of angle'irons, such as the foot-rail portion 3 shown in the detail On the. bed 2v is shown a persons orfgently stretched by a cord 6 that passes over a pulley 'Ztoa series of suitably gradw;
.atedweights 8, 9 and 10. Such arrange- .ment 'as shownis, as is well known, for the purpose of preventing the shortening dur that shallbe adjustableand self adjustable, I
the pulley, or; unequal pulling strain, as would be the casewith a fixed pulley. The pulley 1s also'laterally and vertically adjusti v 1' leg or arm.- Inthe present improvement the Be it known that I,{J0sn1 11.GARLsoN, a citizen of theUn ited States,'residing Fat" pulley 7 has an angular movement relative slight movements of the limb and prevent binding of the cord against the flanges of able by being swiveled to theupper end of a rod,1l which has anoutward andnpward bent portion 12 and a vertical upperportion lateral adjustmentrelative to the holding I Speeiiuu':ation of Iletters Eatent, fatrgntgd g -:19 1915. V
'tothe patient to make itself-adjustable to clamp, as well as to clear the bed of the movable jaw swiveled toxthe end-of the weight. The rod 11 is held for the various screw.- Between the jaws 15 and 20 any -ordi'na'ry frame-rail of a bed, such as, for instance, the rectangular form 111- cross section, maybe clamped. This clamp, which "1' term 'auniversal clamp for this purpose, is also speciaily adaptedfor the angle-iro'nformsof bed frames by the provision ofthe slot 16'which is engaged with the horizontal flange. of the angle; iron as shown. In the to j movablefjaw :20 is a vertical groove 21'.
adapted -to.engage the rod 11 and clamp it between the "jaws 20 "and 15. The movable aw 20 has i a. reduced socket 7 portion 22 which fits slidably intoa vertical. slot '23 the body of the clamp; This jaw is held' against dropping-outfof the slot 23 bya I plate 24 fastened bya screw 25, thisplate 'beircg provided -with a hole 26 --throughv which the rod 11 passes and ,is'supported laterally at the upper endof the clamp. To the bandage-27is faste'neda foot plate 28 4 the patient and'the slotsar'e provided to .with slots 29-; '31, 32, 33, and 34: therein. *In this plate is ahook 35 forfthe cord 6. Theplate is. placed against the foot-36 of ing the heal ng pro s 30 a'fracstured.v Ha'vin'g thus -described' ;my invention,
