To all whom. it may concern Be it known that l, Gnonsn WIARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to improvements in sulky plows of that type which are provided with lifting mechanism for the plows which can be thrown into 0perative connection with the Wheels of the sulky so as to utilize the draft power for raising the plows.
The object of this invention is to provide lifting mechanism for plowsof this type which will be simple and economical in construction and easily applicable to plows new in use without changes in the construe tion thereof, and which can be readilybperated for raising the plow by the driver from his seat on the behind the plow. Each lever has a forwardly extending arme which is pivoted upon a pivot post 6 on the end of the frame A in line with the pivots at the inner ends of the bails D D and the front ends of the hangers (l C. A notched segment F is secured to each end of the frame A and the lever E has a locking'bar or device G which extends longitudinally thereofand is slidably mounted thereon and which is provided on one side with a lug or tooth g which is adapted to engage the various notches of the segment F for locking the lever in different positions relative to the frame. The lever is provided with a coiled spring 9 which engages the locking bar G and normally holds the same in position in which the tooth g is in engagement with the segment F. by moving the lever E the plow may be'raised or lowered, as desired, and will be locked in its adjusted position tooth g with the segment.
Each Wheel B is provided at the inner end of its hub with a ratchet H and the locking bar G extends downwardly to a point near the upper edge of the ratchet and is adapted to be moved downwardly into engagement with the ratchet to lock the wheel and lever together. When so locked, the lever and wheel turn together, thereby swinging the bail D upwardly and raising the plow. The'locking bar G has on its inner face a lug i which projects over the upper edge ofthe segmentand is adapted to engage a cam I on the segment near its front end, as the lever is thrown forwardly. This serves to raise the locking bar out of engagement with the ratchet and bring the tooth g into engagement with the segment F, thus releasing the/lever from thewheel'and at the same time stopping. its forward movement.
All of the parts so far described are comanon in sulky plows of this kind and may be "of any'suitable arrangement and construcits raised I by the engagement of the are constructed as follows: The locking bar G is connected at its upper end with an operating lever K which, preferably, is pivotally secured at one end to a lug k on the lifting lever E at one side of the locking bar, and is provided at its front end with an upwardly extending handle 70' and at its rear end with upwardly and downwardly extending handles 70 and 70 The handle it is intended to be manipulated by the driver from his seat for moving the lock-operating lever to slide the locking bar G into engagement with the ratchet on the wheel. This handle 71." is within easy reach of the driver from his seat and it is only necessary for him to pull the same forwardly a short distance to throw the locking bar out of engagement with the segment and into engagement with the ratchet. The handle 70 is used by the driver for releasing the locking bar from engagement with the segment F when the lever E is to be moved by hand to raise or lower the plow. The handle 10 extends upwardly adjacent to the handle of the lifting lever so that it can be easily grasped by the driver when he takes hold ofthe handle of the lifting lever for operating the latter to raise the plow. These two handles'are arranged close together so that the driver can grasp them both with one hand and easily draw the handle of the lifting lever a sufiicient distance to release the locking bar from engagement wit the segment so the lifting lever can be moved, but not far enough to throw the locking bar into engagement with the ratchet on the wheel. The handle is which extends downwardly at the rear end of the opcrating lever K is intended to be manipulated by the driver when, as is frequently the case, he walks behind the plow. lhe position of this handle is such that it is only necessary for the driver to reach forwardly to grasp the handle and draw it toward him to shift the locking bar into engagement with the ratchet. The handles of the operating leverthus lend themselves to ready manipulation and are easily accessible to the driver whether he is riding upon the plow or walking behind the same. By mounting these handles upon the same operating lever instead of upon separate levers, a simple and compact construction is produced and the handles can compass, at the upper end of the lifting lever, where they are most accessible.
It is sometimes inconvenient for the driver to manipulate the locking bar by hand and for this reason a foot lever T1 is provided which is suitably mounted. on the frame of the sulky and is connected to the operating lever K so that the driver, when riding on the-plow, can throw the locking bar into engagement with the ratchet for raising the plow, by operating the foot lever. In the toward the handle all be located within 'a small construction shown, the foot lever L is pivotally secured at one end to the frame A, preferably by the same bolt which secures the brace a thereto. Intermediate of its ends, the foot lever is pivotally secured to an arm or lever Z which is pivoted at its forward end in advance of the foot lever to the brace a and is pivotally connected at its rear end by a link l with the operating lever K. The downwardmovement of the foot lever produces a corresponding movement in the operating lever K which causes the latter to slide the locking bar Gr out of engagement with the segment and into engagement with the ratchet on the wheel. .This arrangement of the foot lever and arm 1 enables the foot lever to be operated by a forward thrust of the foot and permits the connection between the arm I and the link 1 to be located outside of the segment F substantially in the pivotal axis of the lifting lever so that the foot lever and its connection will not interfere with the movement of the lifting lever, the arm Z being suitably offset near its rear end for this purpose. This construction requires comparatively few parts and permits the foot operating mechanism to be easily applied to some makes of plows now in use without necessitating any change in the construction of the plow.
While the hand and foot mechanisms herein described are shown as applied to one particular form of lifting mechanism, they are not limited thereto but may be used in connection with lifting mechanisms of various other forms and constructions, for operating the locking devices in such mechanisms. The foot mechanism may also be dispensed ing device operated by the hand mechanism only.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a sulky plow, the a lifting lever and lowering the plow, a locking device and means coiiperating therewith for connecting the lifting lever with the sulky wheel for raising the plow, a hand lever mounted on the liftinlg lever for operating the locking device, a foot lever, and connections between the foot lever and said hand lever for operating the locking device-by the inovement of the foot lever, substantially as set forth.
' 2. In a sulky plow, a frame, ground wheels supporting the frame, an earth turning element connected to the frame, and means for raising the earth turning element comprising a lever pivoted to the frame and fixed to the axle of one of the ground wheels, a clutch member carried by the lever and shiftable into and out ofgeonnection with one of the ground wheels and being normally out of connection therewith, and means for moving the clutch member into connection with one of the ground wheels with when desired and the lock combination with and connections for raising including a hand lever pivoted to the firstmentioned lever, connections between the hand lever and the clutch member, and a foot lever pivoted to the frame and being operatively substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a sulky plow, a frame, ground wheels supporting the frame, an earth turning element connected to the frame, and means for raising the earth turning element comprising a lever pivoted to the frame and fixed to the axle of one of the ground Wheels, a clutch member carried by the lever and shiltable into and out of connection with one of the ground Wheels, and being normally out of connection therewith, and
connected to said hand lever,
means for moving the clutch member into and out of connection with one of the ground wheels including an element slidable lengthwise of the lever andconnected to the clutch member, an operating lever pivoted to the first-mentioned lever and connected to the slidable element, and a foot lever pivoted to the frame and connected to the operating lever, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
