To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK V. KNOWL- 'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Heel-Breast-Scouring Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to abrading machines and is herein illustrated in connection with a machine for scouring the breasts of heels of boots and shoes.
Ordinarily a rotary wheel of conical shape is used for such work and with certain heels such a tool does not give satisfactory results. lVith high heeled shoes, particularly if the radius of curvature of the breast of the heel is small, it is impractical or impossible to scour that portion of the breast of the heel which is adjacent to the shank of the sole by reason of the fact that the edge of the scouring cone remote from the heel strikes the shank of the sole, thereby either preventing the edge of the scouring cone from operating upon the breast close up to the shank, or disfiguring the shank, or producing both of these undesirable results.
The object of the present invention is to produce a machine which shall be free from the disadvantages above referred to.
To this end one feature of the invention comprises a scouring tool in the form of a portion of a cylinder having an inclined end and means for oscillating said tool about the axis of the cylinder. i i ith this construction the operator has merely to hold the breast of the heel up to the tool which, when oscillated, will reach every point in the surface of the heel breast, the shape of the tool at its inclined end preventing contact of the upper part of the tool with the shank of the sole. This and other features of the invention, including certain details of construction and combinations of parts will be described in connection with an illustrated machine and pointed out in the appended claims.

Fast to a shaft 1 is a pulley 3 which may be drlven from any suitable source of power by means of a belt 5. A disk 7 fast to the outer end of the shaft carries a crank pin 9 upon which is loosely mounted a block 11, the said block being slidable in a guideway The carrier is mounted for angular movement about a stud 17 which is rigidly attached to the frame of the machine, said stud being provided near one end with a portion of increased diameter 19 between which and the edge of a'"screw 21 the carrier 15 is held. The carrier is thus permitted to move angularly about the stud but is held from longitudinal movement.
Fastened about a cylindrical projection of the carrier 15 by means of a split bearing and a pinch screw 23 is a scouring tool comprising a body portion 25 having the shape, except for the split bearing, ofa' half-cylinder. Fitted inthis body portion is a correspondingly shaped clamp 27 normally held spaced from the body portion 25 by springs 29 and arranged to be moved toward said body portion by a thumb screw 31. Attached to the outer side of the body portion 25 is a felt backing 83 for a strip of sandpaper 35 which is drawn about it and held tightly in place by the clamp 27.
As has been stated the operative portion of the scouring tool is a segment of a cylinder. The breasting knives which determine the curvature of heel breasts have edges which are segments of circles, and for this reason the surface of the scouring tool is made to correspond to a portion of the surface of a cylinder generated by the rotation of a straight line about the axis of the stud 17.
It will be understood that tools of different sizes'are provided and the one selected in any given instance which corresponds to the curvature of the heel breasts which are to be scoured.

In use the shaft 1 is rotated and the shoe presented to the tool in the manner indicated in broken lines in Figs. 2 and 3.
Where a scouring cone is used the abrasive surfaceof such a cone never fits the breast of a heel and inconsequence an operator, after presenting the heel to the cone, must move the shoe into different positions in order to scour the Whole surface of the breast. Moreover, as has been stated above, with a certain type of shoe it is impossible to reach every portion ofthe bfieast with a scouring cone withfthe' device of thepresent in 'Vention, however, not only is it possible to reacl? every portion of the breast but no man pulation of the shoe is required other than to present it to the-tool.

4. A heel breast scouring tool having a body formed as a portion of a cylinder with an inclined end, a yielding backing fast to the outside of said body, a strip of abrasive material drawn about said backing, and a clamp arranged to hold the ends of said strip against the inner face of said body.
