WRITING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 13, 1915. Serial No. 8,057.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUNTER DENNIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tracy, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing Implements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in writing implements; and an object of the invention is to provide a-device of this general character having novel and 1m proved means whereby the marking extremity of the implement may be illuminated.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character havingcoacting therewith novel and improved illuminating means under control of an electric circuit and whereby the source of electrical energy may be carried by the implement.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my imbe carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is ayiew, partly in elevation and partly in section, of a writing implement constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, said implement being disclosed as a fountain pen; Fig. 2 is a view, partly in top plan and partly in section, of the implement as disclosed in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section,
of the implement as herein embodied; Fig.
, 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 5 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of a further embodiment of my invention, the implement being disclosed as a ceive the point 3. Surrounding the barrel 1 in close proximity to the open end thereof is a strap 4 having secured thereto the socket 5 disposed on an incline toward said open end of the barrel and with which is adapted to be engaged a conventional bulb 6, the rays whereof being directed upon the point 3 and the adjacent surface with which it may becoacting by the shade 7 operatively engaged with the strap 4- immediately adjacent the socket 5 and disposed on a curvature whereby the same overlies the bulb 6. The shade 7, as is believed to be self-evident, also afiords a medium whereby the eyes of the user of the writing implement are protected against the rays of light emanating from the bulb 6.
The barrel 1 has disposed longitudinally thereof the interior bead 7 provided with a bore 8 extending through the rear of the barrel 1 and extending at a point adjacent the socket 5 outwardly through the side wall of the barrel, as indicated at 9, and through which are disposed the conductors 10 in electrical connection with the socket 5 and with the contact members 11 at the closed end of the barrel 1.
12 denotes a slip cap of non-conductive material having its bore divided into two compartments by the septum 1 1, the outer end of one of the compartments 15 being Patented Aug. 3, 1915.
adapted to be closed by the head 16 removably engaged therewith. A side wall of the slip cap 12 is provided with a bore 17 through which is disposed an electrical conductor 18 in engagement with the spring contact 19 carried by the septum 14 and with a contact QO carried by the outer end of the compartment 15, said contact 20-hoing adapted to engage the sprin contact 21 carried by the removable heal 16, The
