To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, ERNEST B. NIEMANN, citizen of the United States, residing at Cummings, in the county of Atchison and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for horse drawnvehicles, and more particularly to a device for supporting the driving. reins and preventing the. same from becoming entangled in the doubletree and swingletrees, and has for its object the simplification of the construction and arrangement of the parts in devices of this class heretofore invented. Y
With the above and other objects in view, the referred form of the invention resides in t e construction and arrangement of parts as set forth and claimed in the spoolfica'tion and appended claims. In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the pre-'- ferred form of my invention applied to a double tree. Fig.2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawin s, the numeral 1 indicates the usual draft 0 e or shaft having the usual arms or to ounds 2 extending therefrom.
The numeral 3 indicates the doubletree secured to the shaft or ole 1 by means ofthe bolt 4, said bolt 4 eing secured in a block5 through-which the shaft 1 passes.
85 The doubletree 3 is provided with the usual swingletrees 6.
The rein holder, comprising an embodiment of my invention, is formed preferably from a single strand of wire 7 having the" to intermediate portion 8 thereof substantially parallel to the doubletree 3. The said strand of wire 7 is bent adjacent its ends and at the points 9 and 10 to form portions 11 and 12 extending rearwardly of the intermediate portion 8 and at substantially right angles thereto. The said portions 11 are in turnbent to form portions 13 and 14, sa1dpor-.
vide asubstantially usha 'ed portion for supporting the intermediate portion of the; v
and the swingletrees 6.
.Wire in spaced relation .to the doubletree Q .3 The operation of the device is thought to be clearly understood from the description and drawlngs, and it will be readily appreciated by'any one who is familiar with devices of this class that the position in which my invention is" applied to a doubletree and the form of the same is a simplev though vast improvement. over devices of this class heretofore invented. The object insupporti-ng the same fromfthe rear face of the double tree 3 is that there is no possible way in which the invention may interfere with the connecting of the horse to the swingletrees 6.
It will be noticedthat the portions 11 and 12 are slightl longer than the portions '15 and 16, there y serving to place the intermediate portion 8 of the rein holder slightly in advance of the double tree-3, thereby preventing engagement ofthe reins with the Same or with the swingletrees 6.
The forming of the-wire with. substantially U-shaped portions adjacent its end and securing the same to the rear face of the doubletree, facilitates the securement of the device to any type of doubletree regardless of the position of the swingletrees upon the doubletree. It is well known that in some cases the swingletrees are pivoted on the doubletree,- and it will thus beseen that my invention would be asreadily. applicable to this type of draft in my drawings. he fact that the distance that the vertical portion. 13 is from athe gear as to the type shown doubletree 3 would alloW, of ample'spa'ce-=- for the :swinging of 'a swingletree of; the ;.'j pivoted type, and would therefore nomore interfere with the free operation 1 of a swingletree of the above-mentioned type and the one shown in thedrawings. The fact that my invention is preferably formed of one single strand of Wire serves to. simplify construction.
,-While'I have shown a drawings, still it will be understood that I may. make such minor changes in the detail structurejwhich shall not .depart from to secure by Leta cheapness of specific form in the with substantially v tions, the shorter FL ee of wire, previ'ded with U-shaped pernions on each end. thereoi, said U-shaped portions serving to v support the reiri hglder from the rear face of a dcubletree and the inter- Whereby to dispose the. 7 allowing of free mediate port-ion of parallel with and siighfly in advance of the longitudinal axis of the doul'ileti'ee t0 prevent any Contact of the driving reins wikh the swingieti'ees, said. U -s1mped portions nim'eiiient of the swingle trees upon the doubiecree.
