JONATHAN PRESTON, or. BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 114,851,, dated May 16, 187i.
lMPROVEMENT IN GlRDER-RESTS FOR TIMBERS- The Schedule referred to in theae Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN PRESTON, of Boston, in the county' of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Girder-Rests for Timbers; and I ,do
- herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improve: ment' in a rest or bearing for timbers supported by iron girders; and consists in a cast block or rest, which is slipped onto the lower flange of the girder, and projects from the girder sufficient-ly to form a good and fair hearing for the timbers.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of an iron girder with my improved rest or bearing attached, and with the timbers thereon.
Figure 2 shows a longitudinal section of the iron girder with a cross-section of the timber.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
-A is the irongirder, flanged in the ordinary manner, which may be supported by walls, columns, or
piers for any of the purposes for which iron girders are used. I i
B is the rest or bearing which constitutes my improvement. This rest is cast so as to be slipped onto the girder before the latter is put in its place; its ends project from the sides of the girder so as to form a -fair bearing for the timber, as seen in fig. 1, where G represents the timber.
Lugs or light flanges may be cast on the rest so as to confine the ends of the timber; or the timber may be confined by screws passing through a portion of the rest, as seen in the drawing.
This improvement is more especially designed for supporting timbers in buildings, but is applicable to all purposes where it is necessary to support timbers or other girders, in the manner described.
.Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with an iron-flanged girder, the rest or'bearing'B, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and described.
