Be it known that lf, Gnoncn S. GAYLORD, a citizen of the United States, residingat Neenah, in tlie county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented `certain new and useful Improvements in Cheese- Boxe-s, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention relates to cheese boxes of the size and shape ordinarily employed in the transportation of cheese; and the object of the invention is to construct a box which combines within itself the most desirable features of the wooden cheese boxes at present in use;and to improve upon said constructions by employing an outer wall of water-proof paper-board, which gives to the construction a double wall with an intermediate air space, which is a highly desirable feature of construction.

A further object of the invention is to prevent warping or distortion of the box when subjected to changes in temperature, etc., and to render the entire box waterproof, as Well as strong and durable.

The invention consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

1n the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the interior of the box body, with vthe cover removed; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation through the center of the box, with the cover in place; showing the wall construction; and Fig. 3 is a detail showing the fastening device of the cover.

The body of the box' is of cylindrical formation, and consists of a circular bottom Ll, formed of water-proof paper-board, provided around its margin with upturned tabs 5, which are formed by incutting the edge of the blank and upturning the sections intermediate the cuts. In forming the tabs, a sufficient amount of the material is cut away, so that when the tabs are upturned their edges will contact one another, as shown at the lower left hand corner of Fig. 2, which gives to the construction the form of a continuous flange upturned around the edge of the bottom of the box.

The outer side wall 6 is formed of paperboard suitably water-proofed, and bent or turned t'o embrace and overlie-the upturned tabs around the margin ofthe bottom, to which it is united by means of rivets or staples 7. The ends of the strip composing the outer side wall are overlapped, as at the speeicaton of Letters Patent.

Inside of the outer wall, near the upper edge thereof, is a spacing strip 10, which` extends'completely around the box wall, and this strip, in conjunction with the row of tabs to which the lower edge of the outer wall is united, serves to properly space an inner wall 11, leaving an air chamber 12 intermediate the two walls. rThe inner 'wall is preferably formed of wood veneering of suliicient thickness to afford strength, stiffness and rigidity; and this inner wall, after being bent to cylindrical form, is secured in place by means of a series of staples or rivets 13, which pass through the outer wall, near its upper edge, through the spacing strip 10, and through the inner wall, as shown in Fig. 2.

The bottom is lined and reinforced by a double thickness of wood veneering 14, the two layers of which are arranged with the grain running at right angles, thereby holding up the bottom so that the cheese will not dish or sag in the center, which might be the vcase if the veneer lining were omitted.

In order to permit the escape of moisture from the air chamber between the walls, a series of Ventilating holes 15 are provided, arranged at suitable intervals around the walls of the box.

The cap or cover of the box is formed with a circular top 16, having a rim or flange 17 adapted to embrace the cylindrical wall of the box, which rim or flange is provided around its upper margin with a series of inturned tabs 18, formed, like the tabs 5, to have their edges in abutment and to furnish a continuous surface for contact against the under surface of the top, to which they are secured by means of rivets or staples 19. rlhe cap or cover is further provided with fastening wires 20, threaded through the rim of the cover, which wires cooperate with similar wires 21, threaded through the outer wall of the body portion of the box, the free ends of the respective wires being twisted together, as at 22, to prevent removal or displacement of the cover.

The box, constructed as above, is strong, light and durable, weighing considerably less than a wooden box of like dimensions, and at the same time the formation is one which protects the inclosed cheese against moisture and against sudden changes in tem- Y i Copies of this patent may be obtained for perature, by reason of the provision of the intermediate air chamber. Furthermore, the employment of paper-board for the outer walls ot' the box body increases the strength and durability of the box, as compared With a wooden box of like dimensions, since the paper-board is tough and fibrous, and is not liable to cracking or warping, which sometimesoccur in wooden boxes used for the 'transportation of cheese.

I claim:

A cheese box of iattened cylindrical shape k,with its transverse dimension in excess of its vertical dimension, and consisting of la cylindrical outer wall formed of water proofed paperboard, an outer circular bottom wall yformed of Water'proofed paper-board provided with upturned tabs around its margin,

saidtabs being cut to a size to bring their adjoining edges into abutment when upturned and when kupturned affording a substantially continuous upper edge, a cylindrical inner wall of wood, an upper spacing strip between the inner and outer walls and coperating with lthe series of tabs in holding the two walls uniformly spaced to furnish an intermediate air chamber between the walls, a circular inner bottom lining of wood abutting at its margin against the inner cylindrical wall, rivets passed through the inner and outer walls and through the intermediate upper spacing strip and fastening means entered through the outer wall and through the tabs for holding the sections of the box body together, and a cover formed of water proof paper-board and comprising a circular top portion and a cylindrical ilange portion adapted to overlie the outer Wall of the box, substantially as described.
