Description

(3. IL. BENEDICT.
ENVELOPL APPLICAHON FILED SEPT. 4. 1913'. RENEWED 05c. 21. 1914.
Patemred July 27, 1915.
CHARLES I1. BENEDICT, OF TONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
ENVELOIP.
iaaaaa.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. BENnDro'r, a subject of the King of England, residing at Toronto, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in certain novel and useful improvements in window envelops, or envelops which are designed for address bearing inclosures, and are provided with means through which the address upon the inclosure may be read, without breaking the seal and is a continuation in part of my application Serial No. 686,518 filed Mar. 27, 1912. I
In. the usual form of envelope of this character, the front of the envelop is provided with an opening which is adapted to be cov-. ered by a transparent strip of some suitable fabric, which protects the inclosure and through which the address upon said inclosure may be readily deciphered.
It has been foundin practice, that in making up these envelops, it is necessary to seal the transparent strip upon the inside of the portion containing the address opening, and over said opening, but that owing to climatic conditions, or defects in the adhesive material used for the purpose, or on account of the oily condition of the transparent fabric, the strip frequently becomes detached from the envelop, and the princi a1 object of my present invention is to a ord a means of locking said strip securely in place.
.To this end, therefore, I extend the trans parent strip over upon the side flaps of the envelop, so that it will be folded with said flaps, and as an additional securing means, I provide the ends, of the strip with one .or
i more apertures, through which the sideflaps sealonto the main body of the envelop.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have illustrated it in the accompanying drawings, and ,have described the same with reference thereto in the following. specification, pointing out the particular features of invention in the claims at the close thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a fmnt view of an envelop provided with myinvention.

of the blank with the transparent strip ap plied, prior to folding.
' 1 represents the front portion of my improvedenvelop, which is .provided at its lateral edges with side flaps 1 and with a window opening 2 and is integrally connected the envelop.
3 is a transparent sheet or strip ofsome suitable material which is adapted to be placed over the window opening upon the interior the envelop and held in place by a suitable adhesive substance, preferably applied along its edges.
The transparent sheet is of greater length than the envelop and extends over upon the side flaps 1 as clearly shown in the drawings and folds over with the said side flaps 1 when the envelop is manufactured. This mode of applying the transparent strip to the envelop,- provides an excellent means of securing the strip in place, in addition to the adhesive substance provided upon the upper and lower edges-.ofthe strip, as the extension of the stripnpon the side flaps, and the folding of said strip with the flaps,
locks this strip in place.
envelop, I provide the ends of the said strip which project upon the side-flaps, with one or more apertures 12, as shown in Fig. 3,
through which the adhesive-substance with whichthe side flaps are provided may act to seal the side flaps 1 directly to theback portion of the envelop, and by which means the strip is securely locked in place. It will be seen from the foregoing, that although the transparent sheet would beadditionally secured in place by simply folding it over with the side flaps, it will be positively locked by the gummed portions of the side flaps oppositethe apertures 12, sealing through said -What I claimand desire ters Patent is 1. An envelop for an address bearing inclosure, comprising a. front and back portion and side flaps, the front portion being provided with an opening through which the address may be read and a transparent sheet to secure by Let apertures upon the back of.
' the side flaps of the envelop, the portions of said sheet which extend upon said side flaps,
eing perforated, folded said side flaps.
3. An envelop for an address bearing inclosure, comprising a front and back portion and secured with and side flaps, the front portion being provided with an address opening and the side flaps being provided with an adhesive substance, a transparent sheet covering the address opening and extending upon said side flaps, and being folded therewith and pro vided near its ends with a plurality of apertures, the said side flaps sealing through said apertures and upon a portion of the envelop. 1 In testnnony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
