FRANK J. MUNTZ, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
LIFTING-JACK.
Application filed September 29, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK J MUNTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lifting jacks and has particular application to a hand operated jack.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to improve and simplify the general construction of hand operated lifting jacks of the lever class and to provide a jack which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efliciency and durability and which may be put into service and operated with a minimum expenditure of energy.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1. is a view in side elevation of a lifting jack constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown in inactive position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the jack in use. Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation of the jack.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a lever of any desired length formed centrally with a number of apertures 2 spaced apart longitudinally of the lever, and having the upper edge thereof, at the central portion, serrated as at 3.
4 designates a leg formed of two longitu dinal sections 5 disposed in parallelism and connected to each other, adjacent to one end, by means of a pin 6 and having the opposite ends thereof formed with a series of alining apertures 7 capable of registration with any one of the apertures 2 in the lever 1 and adapted to receive a pivot pin 8 whereby the lever 1 may be swung upon the leg, the sections of the leg being disposed at opposite sides of the lever so that the latter will be effectively supported and free to move. 7
A second leg 9 constructed identically to the first leg has the upper end of the sec- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1915.
Serial No. 864,133.
tions thereof formed with a vertical series of alining apertures 10 adapted to interchangeably register with an opening 11 in one end of the lever 1 to receive a pivot pin 12. Disposed between the sections of the leg 9 and suitably fastened to such sections approximately centrally thereof is a pin 13 and surrounding the pin 13 is an eye 11 carried by one end of a rod 15 extending be tween the sections of the leg 9 and termi- Zontal position the leg 9 swings to a perpendicular position at right angles to the plane of the lever 1 and upon the release of the lever 1 the legs cooperate to support the vehicle in elevated position. To remove the jack, the handle end of the lever 1 is elevated slightly and the leg 9 pulled from un der the adjacent end of the lever 1 under the action of the rod 15 and handle 16 whereby the lever may be lowered and the vehicle axle restored to normal position.
My means of the apertures 2 in the lever 1 and the apertures 7 in the leg 4, the lever and leg may be adjusted relatively to one another to accommodate vehicle axles of various heights, while by means of the apertures 10 in the leg 9 the latter may be adjusted vertically to correspond with the vertical adjustment of the leg 4.
I claim:
A jack of the class described comprising upper end thereof adapted to interchangeto the handle end of said lever, and a handle ably register with an aperture in one end of on the last-mentioned end of said rod. 10
,said lever, a pivot pin passed through said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature alining apertures, a handle on the remaining in presence of two Witnesses.
end o f-said lever, a pin carriedby saidlast FRANK J. MUNTZ. leg approximately centrally thereof, a rod \Vitnesses: having one end connected to said pin and R. T. ERVIN,
I the opposite end terminating in proximity V; C. GIBBIN.
