iaaaaoo.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMANAW. CU M- MINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Auto-Hoods; and I-do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same.
My invention relates to fastening devices for automobile hoods, and has for its object to provide a fastening device especially adapted for use in connection with an auto- .mobile hood where it is desired to detachably secure the same in closed position.
A further object of my improvement is to provide such a fastening device as will permit the sliding movements of the hood and at the same time preserve the closed position of the latter.
With these ends in view "my invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and then particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
' In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a sectional view partly in'elevation of the approved form of my improvement. F gs. 2, 4, and 6, are similar views showing slightly difierent ways of carrying out my invention. Fig. 3 is a section at the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a section at the line 5, 5 of Fig. 4:.
Similar numerals of referen ce denote like parts in the several figures of} the drawing.
Heretofore devices of this description have been constructed in which a hollow member wasemployed in connection with an interiorly headed rod which was surrounded by a coil spring that was confined between-the hollow member and the head of the rod, the member that engaged the automobile hood being in some instances secured to the hollow member and in others to the rod itself.
My im rovement does away with the rod element in that I employ two telescoping slidable hollow members with a spring contained within the innermost member, the
ends of the spring being suitably secured so as to renderthe sliding movements between the members resilient, and the mem- Specification of Letters Patent.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR AUTOaHOODS.
Patented July 2'7, 1915..
Application filed May 24,- 1915. Serial No. 30,027.
\ ber that engages the automobile hood is seoutside the member 1', and to the upper portion of this member 4 is secured a hand lift 5 which is formed'with a handle portion 6 and a hook portion 7, the latter adapted to be engaged with an engageable member 8 secured to the hood 9.
10 is a coil spring contained within the member 1 and whose extremities are secured respectively to the bottom portion of the lift 5, which portion is fastened to the upper part of the member 4, and to a headed pin 11 confined within the portion 2. I Still referring to Fig. 1, the device is shown engaged with the member 8 to lock the hood in closed position, and when the member 5 is lifted, the spring 10 will distend and the member 4 will slide upwardly along the member 1, and after the fastening elements have become disengaged the spring will return the parts to normal position.
In the construction shown at Fig. 2 there are two elongated diametrically opposite slots 12 out within the wall of the member 1, and a pin'13 extends diametrically through the member 4 at its bottom and passes loosely through these slots, and the upper portion of the member 1 has a shouldered part 14, a spring 15 being confined between this shouldered portion and the pin 13, so that when the lift 5 is raised, this spring will be compressed, while its distention will restore the parts to normal posi-- tions.
A still further modification of my improvement is shown at Fig. 4, where I have dispensed with the pin 11 by lancing. out tongues 16 from the body of the member 1 and folding these tongues inwardly in superposed position, and to these tongues the lower end "of the spring 10 is secured, the
construction in all other respects being preto the lower portion of the lift and to theheaded pin 11 in the manner above specified, the operation'of this construction being precisely the same as that shown at Fig. 1.
It will therefore be clear that it is imma terial as to which one of the slidable tubular elements is connected to the hand lift, and I therefore do not wish to be limited in this respect.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the character described, a socket member, two hollow tubular members and slidably telescoping one within the other, one of the tubular members having one end formed with a rounded portion for engaging in the socket member, a hand lift secured to the opposite end of the companion tubular member and adapted to prevent dislodgment of the first tubular member, the hand lift having a handle portion and a hook element,.and a resilient element normally acting to contract the tubular members.
In testimony whereof I afiix ,my signature.
NORMAN \V. CUMMINS.
