To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY D. YOUNG, a
citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nebulizers, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to nebulizers, and more particularly to certain improvements in the construction and arrangement thereof whereby it is possible to use any one, or any combination of mixtures, of a variety of different medicines contained in as many different connected flasks or receptacles interposed between the source of fluid under pressure and the discharge nozzle or instrument, for the purpose of producing medicated vapors for the treatment of the human body, with a minimum amount of adjustment and manipulation.
Among the salient objects of the invention are,to provide in a nebulizer a series of connected medicine flasks or re ceptacles interposed between a source of fluid, such as air, gas or the like, under pressure, and the discharge or administering instruments, whereby said fluid can be directed into any one or more of said flasks or receptacles and into the liquid or medicine contained therein, and discharged therefrom through one or more outlets in the form of a medicated vapor; to provide in such a device a construction whereby the fluid or vapor can be discharged therefrom either in its natural and unmedicated condition, or in the form of a medicated vapor, in an even and uniform flow, or in a vibrating or pufling manner; and in general, to provide an improved nebulizer of the character referred to by means of which a great variety of medicated vapors or the like can be produced and delivered therefrom, under pressure, either in an even and uniform flow, or with a vibrating discharge, heated or not, and all with a minimum amount of adjustment and manipulation.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,-

is all the adjustment or manipulation required or necessary in order to secure any one of a great variety of medicated vapors, and this variety includes any one, or a combination of any two or more medicines contained in the different flasks, and also includes its delivery in an even and uniform flow, or its delivery in a vibrating or pufling manner.
In the drawings 1 designates a cabinet provided with a series of instrument drawers, leaf and closet, with space in the back part thereof for a pressure tank, which is indicated in outline in dotted lines, Fig. 1 and 2. The cabinet is preferably provided with a plate glass top. The nebulizer proper comprises in combination a pressure tank, shown in dotted lines in the rear of the cabinet. From this tank is a feed pipe 2 connected at its upper end by means of nipples & and an angle valve 5 with a horizontally extending distributing pipe 3 and through which the contents of the tank is admitted, under pressure, to the distributing pipe 3, from which it is delivered through the cooks 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 into the flasks or receptacles 12, 13, 14:, 15, 16 and 17, respectively, which said flasks or receptacles contain the different medicines used. The air or other fluid used from the tank is conveyed or directed into the medicine flasks through tubes, as 18, Fig. 3, and discharged into the medicine contained therein from the tubes in the manner indicated by the arrows, Fig. 3. From these medicine flasks or receptacles the medicated fluid or vapor passes around the tubes 18 and into a second horizontally extending pipe or-connecting tube, 19, which connects with a larger flask or receptacle 20 constituting a mixing chamber into which is discharged the medicated fluid 'orvapor from the medicine flasks. This vapor is discharged into the mixing chamber 20 in the same manner as the fluid. from the pressure tank is conveyed to the several medicine flasks, that is, through a tube, as 21. From the mixing chamber 20 the medicated vapor passes upwardly around the tube 21 and into, a discharge tube I or nozzle 22. The main pipe 2 from the pressure tank is also connected by means of a valve cock 23 to the discharge tube or nozzle 22 so that fluid from the tank can be directed outwardly through the nozzle without being passed through the medicine flasks, by simply turning the valve 23.
The discharge mechanism, shown on an enlarged scale in Fig. 4, comprises a double tube arrangement, the upper tube of which is provided with a cook or valve 24 and discharges into a vibrator, designated as a whole 25. This vibrator comprises a round cup.'like casing having mounted therein a series of revoluble vanes or blades 26 carried by a spindle or aXle 27, which said spindle at its lower end forms a valve or cock 28., controlling a passageway through the bottom of said vibrator and with which passageway the second tube29 from the pipe 22 connects. The spindle 27 is adapted to be turned by means of a lever 30, mounted upon the upper end thereof and upon the vibrator, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. When turned in one, direction the passageway through the bottom of the vibrator is opened, as indicated Fig. 4, and when turned in the opposite direction, said passageway. is closed against the passing of vapor therethrough. hosejnozzle 31 is secured nto the lower side of the vibrator. This hose nozzle 31 is in open communication with the passageway through the'bottom of the vibrator and also with the chamber; of the vibrator in which .are the vanes 26, this opening being designated at 32.

When the cook "24 is opened, the fluid is striking the vanes26, and causing'them to rotate rapidly, thus giving a vibrating or r effect to the fluid or vapor as it is discharged through the opening 32 in the bottom of the vibrator and through the hose nozzle 31;. Ifit is desired to'have the vapor withoutvibrations, the cock 2 4 is; closed and the lever 30 upon the vibrator is moved to the position shown in full lines, Fig. 6, thereby j opening a straight passageway through, the bottom of the vibrator and to the hose nozzle 31, and from which the vager, medicated or clear, passes in an evenow. By this construction it is possible, by
simply turning the cocks, to secure a vapor for treatment of the human body, which vapor may be charged with any one, or more of the medicines contained in the several inedicine flasks, any combination of the medicines being had by opening the cock thereto and thus admitting the fluid from the pressure chamber. This fluid or vapor after passing through the different medicine flasks, passes to the mixing flask or chamber 20, from which it passes to the discharge tube or nozzle, either through the vibrator or through the lower passageway in an even and uniform manner, and with any desired pressure.
A pressure gage 32 in communication with the main pipe 2 from the pressure tank indicates the pressure from the tank, while a pressure gage 33 indicates the pressure in the tube 19, being the pressure at which the vapor is administered to the patient.
In Fig. 7 I have shown a somewhat modifled form of discharge mechanism. In this construction there are two direct connections from the main pipe 2 leading from the pres sure tank. These two pipes 3 1 and 35, are provided with valve cocks 36 and 37, respectively. The upper pipe, 34, is in open communication through to the vibrator, as indicated clearly in the drawings, and does not communicate with the mixing flask or chamber 20. The lower pipe 35 connects through to the passageway 38 in the lower part of the vibrator, and to the hose nozzle 31. Discharge pipes 34 and 35v are connected at 39 so as to provide open communication from one to the other when desired, with a controlling valve cock 4:0 therebetween. The upper pipe 3-1 is also provided with a valve cock 41 near the vibrator. In this embodiment of the discharge mechanism, there is provided an outlet from said vibrator chamber in addition to the outlet to the nozzle 31.
passed out through the nozzle 31, or it can be directed out through the outlet 42 and discharged into the atmosphere, as indicated at 42, Fig. 7. This makes it possible to discharge more or less air or vapor, pure or medicated, from the vibrator through the nozzle 31 and through which may be passing at the same time air, pure or medicated, in the form of vapor. The principal object sought and here obtained is to make it possible to get any combination of medicines and to deliver the vapor in any one of a variety of ways, without other adjustment or manipulation than the simple turning of the valve cocks. It is not necessary to turn or in any other way adjust the different medicine flasks, or to make different connections with the diflerent medicine flasks to be used. Thus I have provided a complete nebulizer with which it is possible to get any combination of medicines for the vapor; to discharge or administer it to the patient in an even and uniform flow, or with vibrations, to regulate the strength of the medication and to dilute it with pure vapor.
While I have shown and described but one general embodiment of the invention, I am aware that modifications and changes can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not therefore limit the invention to the showing here made for purposes of illustration, but claim the invention broadly as stated in the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. A nebulizer comprising in combination, a source of fluid under pressure, a series of medicine flasks, a mixing flask, a vibrator comprising a casing with a revoluble member therein adapted to be automatically actuated by the passing of a fluid through said casing, a discharge nozzle, means connecting said source of fluid, said medicine flasks, said mixing flask, said vibrator and said nozzle whereby said fluid can be passed through one or more of said medicine flasks, said mixing flask, said vibrator, or around them to said nozzle, substantially as described.
2. In a nebulizer, the combination with a tank to contain a fluid under pressure, of a distributing pipe leading therefrom, a series of medicine flasks connected with said distributing pipe with valve cocks for opening and closing communication between said tank and any one or more of said flasks, a

3. In a nebulizer, the combination with a tank to contain fluid under pressure, of a distributing pipe leading therefrom, a series of medicine flasks connected with said distributing pipe with valve cocks for opening and closing communication between said tank and any one or more of said flasks, a mixing flask into which said medicine flasks discharge, a discharge pipe or nozzle from said mixing flask, a vibrator interposed between said mixing flask and said discharge nozzle, means opening and closing communication between said mixing chamber and said discharge nozzle, through said vibrator, or direct, or both through said vibrator and direct, at will, and means also providing communication between said tank and said discharge pipe or nozzle either through said vibrator or direct and without passing through said mixing chamber, substantially as illustrated.
