Description

(No Model.)
W. s. McLEAN. AZE'PARATUQ FOR ADMINIST-ERING HEATED AND MEDIGATED A'IR. No. 489,029. Patented Jan; 3, 1893.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. MCLEAN, OF SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
APPARATUS FOR ADMINISTERING HEATED AND MEDICATED AIR.
EEJPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,029, dated January 3, 1893.
Application filed August 31,1892. Serial No. 444,619. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. MOLEAN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Administering Heated and Medicated Air; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is an apparatus for administering and heating medicated air.
It is a common thing to compress air and administer it to the air passages of the body by tubes and mouthpieces for the purpose of dilating the lungs and passages. It is also common to pass the air so compressed through medicinal fluids, the medicine being taken up by the air and thereby conveyed to the air passages.
My invention consists in heating the air so compressed and medicating and conveying it to the body.
The figure, is a side sectional view of my apparatus.
A, is an air receiver, the air being pumped into it through the tube 1. It is provided with a pressure gage 4.
B, is the heater provided with a concave bottom B for receiving the lamp L, and the 1 flue B passing through the air chamber for conveying the heat; and having the orifice and stop cock 7, on the side for drawing off the heated air.
0, is a glass bottle partially filled with medicated fluid, D. At or just above the bottom of the bottle there is an orifice into the bottle connected by the tube 8 to the stop cock 7 of the heater whereby the heated air may be conveyed into the bottle G, and through the medicated fluids. One or more bottles may be connected to the heater and as many different fluids used as desired.
2 is a perforated tube projecting into the bottle 0 through which the medicated heated air is taken, as desired, through stop cook 10 and tube 11. To end of tube 11 a suitable mouthpiece, or other pieces, may be attached as desired. The air is thus taken from the compressor A through tube 5 into the heating receptacle B thence through tube 7 into the liquid D, bubbling up through liquid into chamber 0, through pipe 12, and tube 11 to the mouth, &c., being heated and medicated on its journey to the mouth.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device for heating, medicating and administering compressed air, the combination with an air compressor and gage, of the heater B, provided with an air chamber for receiving compressed air, and a chamber below the said air chamber for receiving the lamp, or other heater, and provided with the vent B" passing through the air chamber, the pipe 5, with its valves, for conducting the air from the compressor to the top of the heater, the medicating chamber 0 containing medicating fluid D,the pipe 8 with its valves, forconveying the heated air from the side of the heater B to the bottom or side of the medicating chamber and below and into the medicating fluid D, and the perforated tube 12, valve 10 and tube 11 for conveying the heated and medicated air to the lungs and air passages, substantially as described, and as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM S. MCLEAN.
