Be it known that I, ALVA): MACAULEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Adding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to what are com" monly known as adding machines, by which individual items are printed, listed. and added. and the object of my invention is to provide'a machine of this character with means or mechanism under'the control of the operator for throwing the adding inechaiiisinpropcr out of actionwhenever it-is desired to print'a number. or series of numbers withoutadding or accumulating them. with the result that the machine will perform its usual functions of printing as be- -fo're. but the adding function of such-machine will be eliminated so: long as said means remains in operative position.
My invention also contemplatesthe provision of means actuated in connection with said newly provided mechanism and cooper ating with a laterally movable paper carriage for advancing or shifting such carriage to different columnar positions and I also means for controlling the vertical feed of the paper on the platen. My invention is more particularly designed as an improvement upon what is commonly designated the Burroughs adding machine. as "illustrated and' described.

Each of these racks 610 cooperates and meshes with its adding wheel pinion 916 having an adding-0r dial wheel 912. The series of adding wheel pinions 916 are mounted in a frame C. which is arranged to rock on a transverse rod or shaft 900 with the result that during the movements of the main'operating lever 367 such pinion frame is caused to be-swung out of mesh with the racks. 1 r
The means for swingingthe pinion frame comprises the arm 914 and the three-armed lever 913, to which the former is pivoted at its rearward end. This arm 914 is pivotally suspended at the lower endof a long subward movements of the respective racks,
and the values of the operated keys thereby transferred to the adding wheels, it being borne in mind that upon the downward movement of these particular racks and upon the forward stroke of the operating handle the pinions had been removed from engagement with the racks.
In operating a Burroughs machine, the item or amount is first set upon the keyboard and the operating handle is given a complete stroke, that is a forward and back- -ward'movement, with the result that the main levers B corresponding to the particular rows of keys operated are moved distances corresponding to the value of the particular keys depressed, so as to bring the proper type plates adjacent the printing line of the platen and the amount or number is thereby printed. However, prior to the movement of these levers B the adding pin' ions are removed from mesh or engagement with their racks so' that when such racks or the particular ones operated move downwardly, they will not turn or rotate such pinions. At the completion of .the forward strokeof the operating handle the amount is printed and thereupon, on the return or backward strokeof the operating handle, and before the racks 610 are restoredyto normal position, the pinions are brought back into engagement with such racksjand are turned or rotated by such racks distances corresponding to the downward movement of the latter, with the result that the amount set up on the keyboard is accumulated on the adding wheels. 7 v
The means. for operating the arm 914 to swing the pinion frame and pinion out of operative engagement with the racks comprises the three-armed lever 813,- mounted on rock shaft 800, and the wipe block or plate 821, which is pivoted on the outer end of the arm 813 of the lever 813. A spring 883 on the lever 813 tends to hold the wipe plate inalinement with its arm 813*. The wipe plate cooperates with the studs 961 and 961 arranged at opposite sides or ends of the lever 913, with the result that when the operating handle is drawn forwardly and the shaft 800 thereby rocked, the Wipe plate 821 will contact the stud 961 and move the latter upwardly, thereby rocking the plate or lever 913 and forcing the arm 914 forwardly, whereupon the pinion frame and pinions will be swung forwardly out of engagement with their racks. In the rocking of lever 813, the wipe plate 821 is carried rearwardly, and, upon the return stroke of the operating handle, normally cooperates with the stud 961 to move such stud and its end of lever 913 upwardly, with the result that the arm 91l-is drawn rearwardly and restored to normal position and the pinion frame and pinions are also restored.
As is well known, when the total key 265 is depressed and kept in that condition during both the forward and rearward move ments of the operating handle 367, a grand total will be printed and the machine will be cleared, but in case such total key is kept depressed only during the forward movement of the operating handle and restored to its normal position just before or during the. rearward movement of such handle, a sub-total will be printed, but the machine will not be cleared. When the total key is depressed, the downward movement thereof is communicated through the link 911 to the arm 914, with the result that the pinions are permitted to remain inmesh with their racks during the downward movement of the latter, whereupon the racks will descend distances corresponding to the values of the adding wheels associated with such pinions and the type plates will be swung upward corresponding distances and the total willbe printed. In the described descent of the racks the pinions will all be restored to zero.
If now the total key is kept depressed upon the rearward or return movement of the operating handle the pinions will be removed from'mesh with their racks, with the result that the racks will first drop and then be restored to their normal elevated position, at which time the machine is said to be cleared. However,
in case the total key isv released and restored" to normal position at the completion of the forward movement of the operating handle, the pinions will be left in mesh with the racks and, upon the return movement of the operating handle, such racks will beraised to normal .position and will restore to the pinions respectively the values taken off by the racks and theretofore indicated by the pinions. This operation is known as taking a sub-total.
The paper carriage arranged at the rear of the adding machine frame is laterally movable and adjustable to different columnar positions and adapted to receive the impressions from the printing mechanism of the adding machine. This paper carriage is of the same general construction and mode of operation as that illustrated and deianne scribed in Pike Patent No. 595,964, issued December 21, 1897, to the American Arithmometer Company. The paper carnage mechanism, however, differs in construction and operation in several respects, as will be hereinafter made apparent.
In itsusual operation and according to the normal conditions herein illustrated, the Burroughs machine has provision for feeding the paper vertically on the platen at every full operation or complete stroke of the operating-handle. To this end, one of the main rock shafts 100 of the machine is operatively connected to a vertical feed arm 1513 hung upon such shaft and carrying at its upper end an cnt -friction. roller 538.
This feed arm is rocked rearwardly (to the leftin Fig.1) when the main operating handle is actuated, with the result that the said anti-friction roller rocks an-arm 30 upwardly and causes a second arm 31, which is mounted on the same shaft 32 as the arm 30, to actuate a bail or universal rod 6 with i the result that the-platen will be advanced a certain predetermined distance upon' the return movement of such bail. In the pres: ent instance, the paper feedmechanism is constructed and operated in the following -manner, although it will be understood that my invention isnot limited to anyparticular construction.
Referring to Fig. 1, the platen 619 is provided at one end with a ratchet wheel 519, with which engages a springpressed pawl 521 pivoted upon a plate 526 which is itself hung or pivoted upon the spindle of the platen. This'pivoted plate 526 is opertively connected through the medium of a link (Z with a bell crank e. This bell crank i'ssecu'red to a transverse rod 6, to which the universal'ro'd or bail e is also secured. It will be readily understood that whenever this universal rod or bail is rocked rearwardly, that is toward the left in Fig.1, the bell crank 6 will be rocked and the plate and pawl 521 swung in a clockwise direction (Fig. l), whereupon such pawl will slip by a predetermined number of ratchet teeth and upon the return movement of said parts such pawl, being in engagement with the ratchet wheel, willturn or advance the platen a certain distance as predetermined by the-particular point of attachment of the upper end of the link (Z with the swinging plate 526. The platen is thus advanced one line space upon the .restoration of said moved parts and only after the adding ma chine has printed the item or amount upon the paper on the pla en. .1 1
'The' machine herein illustrated and hereinbefore described normally operates asan ordinary Burroughs machine, but 'by the provision of my new mechanism or attachment the adding function or mechanism of such machine is eliminated or thrown out of action whenever dcsiredby the operator,
and, at the same time, my attachment is de-- signed-to throw the vertical paper feed out of action as well as to control the transverse '.-feed or shifting ofthe paper carriage, with the result that when desired by the operator :1 number may be printed upon the platen without accumulating or adding and without vertical paper feeding and the carriage .may be shifted or advanced to the next columnar position to enablea second number or value to be'printed by the machine on the same horizontal line, and so on according' to the capacity of the paper carriage as to longitudinal shifting or adjustment. By these means a series of itemsmaybe printed on the same horizontal line, some of which items, which may be termed numbers, may be printed without accumulating and others, which may be termedvalues, may be accumulated. Moreover, the arrangement is such, as hereinafter made apparent, that my mechanism or attachment maybe employed for shifting the carriage to different columnar positions by operating such attachment independently of the adding machine mechanism.
As hereinbefore suggested during the explanation of the usual operation of the Bur- T roughs machine, the adding wheel pinion's which are concerned in the adding or accumulating function of the machine, arealternately removed and restored to operative engagement with the series of racks (.310, such pinions being drawn out of mesh or engagement upon the forward stroke of the operating handle and restored to such engagement upon the backward stroke of such handle, with the result that the particularracks actuated communicate to their respective pmions the values represented by their particular keys which were set or operated. My new mechanism or attachment pable of controlling the carriage shift in a manner hereinafter explained.
Referring to my new mechanism or attachment, the same comprises essentially a main operating lever 1 pivoted at a point intermediate its length on a pin or stud 2 on some fixed part of the machine and pivotally connected at its forward end to a vertical bar or key stem 3. This key stem passes upwardly through the keyboard of the machine, preferably at the left hand.

This lever is held with a yielding pressure in I its elevated position by means of a spring 5 connected to suchlever an inoperative position so as not to affect or interfere with the usual operation of themachine. However, the arrangement is such that upon the depression ofthe special key ithe lower edge of this lever will be brought into the path of movement of the wipe plate 821, or rather, as shown, in the path of a pin 821 secured to the inner side of such wipe plate, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5, with the result that upon the extreme rearward movement of the arm 813 such pin 821' will be contacted by such lower edge of the lever 1 and the wipe plate I 821 will thereby be rocked to a substantially horizontal position, at least to such a position as to interfere with its usual cotiperation with the stud 961, all as illustrated clearly in Fig. 3. At the completion of the stroke of the operating handle the arm 813* .will be restored to its normal condition,
but without operating the three-armed lever 913 or restoring the adding wheel pinions to engagement with the racks. Consequently the itemor number which may have been printed by the machine while the special key 4 was in its depressed condition has not been transferred to or accumulated upon the; adding wheels. In practice I prefer to provide on the lower edge of the lever 1 a special bearing surface in the form of the depending extension 1*, although the lower edge of the lever itself could be made to perform the desired result. When the operator releases the special .key 4, my attach-' tively connected with the feed arm 1513 through the medium of the stud 1539. .Still handle is drawn forward, the arm 117 is rocked 'rea-rwardly, carrying the lower end of the arm 15131} ,in the same direction, whereupon feed arm 1513 is also rocked rearwardly, through the medium of the stud 1539 working in a substantially vertical slot in such feed arm, and said parts will thereupon be restored to normal position on the backward or return stroke of the main operating handle.
Inasmuch as it is desired to print the items or numbers'on the same horizontal line, it isnecessary to throw the vertical paper feed mechanism out of action when my new mechanism or attachment is operated, and to this end I provide for destroying the operating connection between the feed'arm 1513 and the rock shaft 100: In the present instance I attain such result by providing a joint or connection between the arm 1513!; and the feed arm 1513. Such latter arm, as particularly shown in Figs. 6,7 and 8, has a hub which is hung or pivoted upon a stud 1501, secured to the left hand side frame 1066 of the machine. This hub has a shoulder or tooth 6 normally engaged by a pivoted hook 7 which is normally spring-pressed into engagement with such tooth by means of a spring 8, Figs. 7 and 8. This hub is pivoted to the rearward end of a bell crank shaped lever 9, which is hung or pivoted at its middle portion upon the stud 1501. The stud 1539, which in the ordinary Burroughs machine is carried by the arm 15137}, is securedunder the present construction to the lower or forwardly directed arm of the bell crank 9 but engages the slot 1513 of the lever or rocking arm 1513 in the usual and well known way.
Under the construction just described and with the hook 7 in engagement with its tooth 6, the feed arm will be operated at every stroke of the operating handle as in the ordinary Burroughs machine, but as will be apparent, whenever the-engagement between the hook and the tooth is broken or destroyed, the paper feed mechanism will be thrown out of action, inasmuch as the operating connection or joint between the arm 15131} and the feed arm 1513 will be broken. In the present instance I provide for the breaking of this joint or operating connection by means of my attachment or lever 1, whose rearward end is downwardly curved and brought adjacent to and parallel with the hook 7 and provided on its upper edge with an inclined hearing or contact surface 1", which is arranged to contact a pin or stud 7 on the outer or left hand side of such hook. Normally this bearing surface lies adjacent such pin 7, but does not interfere with or affect the usual or 1 thereby rocked upwardly, the pin 7* willbe contacted by the bearing surface 1 and forced upwardly and rearwardly, with the result that the connection between the hook 7 and tooth 6 will be destroyed, whereupon the movement of the rock shaft 100 will not be communicated to the feed arm 1513 and the paper feed mechanism will therefore not be operated, Fig. '3. In Figs. 1 and 8 I have illustrated the normal relative condition of theseparts and also their normal position when the machine is at a state of rest, but in Fig. 7 I have illustrated the normal relative condition of the parts but showing their relative positions upon the completion ofthe forward stroke of the main operating'handle. In these particular figures of the, drawing it will be-understood that my attachment is in normal position, that is to say, is inoperative, but in Fig. 6 I have illustrated such normal condition and position in full lines and in dotted lines have indicated the position of the rearward end of the lever 1 when operated and also the thrown out or. disengaged position of the hook or catch 7. It will be understood that when such hook is disengaged the arm 151% moves freely or'looselyupon the stud 1501 and its tooth or hook 6 also moves freely,
inasmuch as it is not engaged, Fig. 3. Upon 'the release ofthe special key the lever lrwill 'as determined by the operator, in which operationsthe paper carriage may be shifted or adjusted by him to different columnar positions. However, it is desirable to provide for horizontal paper feed by the ad% justmentor shifting of the paper carriage to such different columnar positions in an {LHtOIDEItlClIlZIIlIlBI' through the medium of 8 my attachment or new mechanism, which is preferably given this third function as herein provided, in addition to the function of control of the"- accumulating feature of the machine and the second function of control of the vertical paper feedmechanism.
As hereinbefore stated, the paper carriage is of :the laterally shiftable or adjustable type, resembling in general characteristics the carriage of the Pike patent aforesaid,
but differing therefrom particularly in the provision of-spring tension mechanism tending to draw the carriage to the left 311G111! the provision of automatically controlledtabulating mechanism whereby the carriage may be'released from one columnar position and advanced to another columnar position, said tabulating mechanism being under the control of my attachment, herein'before referred to.
In the present instance the paper carriage i 1568 is mounted to slide laterally in suitable manner at the upper end of a bracket frame 1566 projecting rearwardly from and securedto the rear end of the adding machine case 1167. This bracket 1 frame carries spring tension mechanism' comprising the usual spring drum 10 having the usual band '11 fastened in suitable manner to the depending portion 1568 of the carriage frame, such spring tension mechanism tend- 'ing to draw the carriage toward the left as viewed from the operators position, or toward the right as viewed in Fig. 2, but normally restrained by the tabulating' mechanism nowabout to be described;
The tabulating mechanism comprises, in the present instance, a tabulating bar 12 se cured to the upper end of the bracket frame 1566 and provided with a series of notches 12, with which cooperates a locking dog 13. This locking dog'is pivoted in aslot' 14: formed in aportion 1568 intermediate of the width of the carriage frame. The locking dog is secured to a rock shaft 15which extends transversely of the machine and longitudiiially of the paper carriage, the same being mounted in bearing lugs 16 near the ends of the carriage frame. The right hand end of this rock shaft is extended beyondits bearings and thereprovided with a knob or hand wheel 17, wherebythe same may be manually operated or manipulated by the operator. A suitable spring 18 connected at one end to the rock shaft serves to normally rock or hold the latter with a yieldingpressure in such manner that the locking dog 13 will be caused tonormally bear against thelower edge of the tabulating bar 12 and to snap into any one of the notches 12*- presented to it. This rock shaft may be operated by merely turning the knob 17 but inthe usual operation of my machine it is designed that,
this rock shaft shallbe operated automatically by'my new mechanism or attachment hereinbeforedescribed, and to this end I provide'a-uniyers'al bar or bail 19 ad apted to be operated by the extended rearward end of my lever 1 and to be operatively connected with the rock shaft 15. In the present in stance-this operating connection consists of a pair of crank arms 20,. from whose outer ends'depend links 21 pivotally connected at their upper ends to such crank arms and at their lower ends tolevers 22 pivoted intermediate their length to a rod 23 which extends longitudinally ofthe carriage frame and has its bearings in lugs 24 thereof. The forward ends of these levers 22 are connected by said universal rod or bail 19 which extends into close proximity to the 'rearwardly extending end of the operating lever 1, in whatever position the paper carriage may be, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3.
In orderto so'time the automatic rocking of the shaft 15 that it will not be operated until after the printing mechanism of the machine has acted and the number or amount has been printed, I provide such rearward end of the lever 1 with a wipe plate 25, which is pivoted to such end of the lever and provided with a finger 25 extending rearwardly and adapted to intersect the plane of movement of the universal rod when the operating lever 1 is actuated. A spring 25 serves to holdthe wipe plate in its normal position as determined by the contact of another finger 25" against a pin' 25 arranged on one side'of the lever 1.
It willbe understood from the foregoing description thatiwhen the special key 4 is depressed and the lever 1 thereby caused to interfere with one of the functions'of the wipe plate 821 and to break the joint or operating connection of the feed arm'1513 as hereinbefore described, the extreme rearward end of such lever will be rocked upwardly, with the result that the finger 25 of the wipe plate will slip or flip by the universal rod 19 with-' out affecting the latter; but that upon the return or restoration of the parts to normal position such finger 25 will press upon the top of such universal rod and force the latter downward, thereby rocking the levers 22,
crank arms 20 and rock shaft 15 and releasing the dog 13 from its engagement with the tabulating bar. The spring tension mechanism being no longer restrained by the'locking dog, will draw or advance the carriage to the left until such dog, which has been released just as soon as the finger 25 cleared the universal rod in its downward movement, engages the next notch to the left of the one previously engaged, with the result that the carriage will now be positioned and lorfzked in the next columnar position to the le t. 1

-At the completion of theforward stroke of theoperating handle the number-represented by the keys set on the keyboard is printed on the paper on the platen, and upon the return stroke of the operating han-- die the wipe plate 821, being now contacted by the lever 1, is heldout of cooperative re-- lation with the stud 961 which it is adapted to contact, under ordinary conditions,x-forthe purpose of restoring the pinion framebefore the racks were restored to normal position. Consequently the pinion frame will remain out of mesh or; engagementwithothe racks upon their upward or return niovement and the number set up on the key l board and printed as described willjnot be transferred to the adding wheels, that is to say, the number will not be accumulated. The described depression of the special ,key 4 has also had theeffect of breaking the joint or operatingconnection between the rock shaft 100 and the feed arm 1513, with the result that during the described opera-- .tion of-the machine the platen will not be rotated or'turned by the paper feed mechanism and the paper will consequently not be fed vertically as under ordinary ,condi-,- tions. Furthermore, upon the depression of the special key 4 the rearward end of the lever will be rocked upwardly withits wipe plate positioned above the universal rod or bail of the carriage shifting mechanism, so that upon the release of the'key and the restoration of its associated parts to normal position, and after the numberhas been printed upon the platen and theoperating handle has been restored to" substantially normal position, such wipe plate will rock the bail and thereby release the locking dog from the tabulating bar, with the result that the carriage will be advanced to the nextcolumnar position, In the example now being explained, the next item, which "will consequently be printed on the same horizontal line as the number of the bale of cotton, is the weight of suohbale, which weight is to be accumulated on the machine. It will be understood that in the printing; and accumulating of this item or weight the paper feed mechanism is operated in the usual manner and the platen is turned one line space, ready-for the recording of the next transaction. It will be evident fnoin the foregoing description of the operation of the tabulating mechanism that my special key andconnections may be utilized for the purpose of advancing the carriage to different columnar positions without operating the machine, that is, by simply depressing such special key without operating the machine in the usual and well known way, the locking dog will be released and the carriage will be advanced as hereinbefore-described. How ever, when themachine is operated at a time when. the special key 4 is depressed, my attachmentwill exercise its three different functions, first the function of throwingthe' adding mechanism out of action by interfering with the action of the wipe plate 821,.second the function of preventing-the operation of they vertical paper feed mechanism, and third the function of controlling the .tabulating mechanism or. carriageshift, that is the horizontal paper feed.
As 'hereinbefore suggested, some measure of my invention may be obtained by omitting the rearward extension'of the lever l which serves to operate the carriage shifting mechanism, leaving such lever or attachment to perform its remaining two functions.v

It will be understood that in such special manipulation of the machine the paper feed mechanism has been moved on the forward stroke of the operating handle whereby the platen is turned thereby upon the return stroke of such handle, and that upon the depression of the special key the wipe plate 821 has been moved or swung to inoperative posi- '85, tion, causing the pinion frame to remain out of engagement with. the racks. It is thus evident that the advantage of the paper feed may be obtained prior to the time it is necessary to call my attachment into action for the purpose of preventing the accumulation of the number on the adding wheels. While the key 4; has been described as a 'device for preventing. engagement between the accumulating pinions and. their actuatmg racks at a time when they otherwise would come into engagement, it will be ap- 'be taken without requiring release of the total key in the middle of an operation.
