HEADLIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 15, 1314. Serial No. 838,779.
To all/whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM FREDRIOK KUsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headlights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamps, and more particularly to lamps commonly known as headlights for use on motor vehicles. I
It is'well known that the headlights now in use are very offensive to pedestrians on the city streets, due to the intense brilliancy of the same, and in some cases there have been city ordinances passed prohibiting a lamp of undue brilliancy being used in the city limits. It has, therefore, been necessary in many cases to use dimmers or modifiers for the headlight of motor vehicles, or to provide a separate set of lamps for city service and extinguish the large lamps.
This, of course, entails a larger expense on the owner of the vehicle, and necessitates the, use of a complicated device for dimming the headlight.
The object of my invention is to overcome the aforesaid objections, and to provide a headlight in which the brilliancy of the same may be quickly and effectively reduced or increased without the use of complicated shutter operating mechanisms.
- Another object of my invention is to provide a headlight which contains more than one lamp, thereby providing a means to increase or decrease the brilliancy of the light.
A still further object is to provide a headlight of the class described which will provide, in the present instance, various degrees of brilliancy without the usual use of I complicated mechanisms for shutting off the construction, combination and arrangement light.
Other objects and advantages of my in- 'vention .will appear as a more thorough understanding of the same is attained.
The invention resides preferably in the of parts as shown in the drawing'and described in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a headlight of the class described embodying the preferredform of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1..

Referring more particularly to the drawmg, the numeral 1 indicates a light containing chamber or casing substantially frusto-conical in shape, and provided with the transparent face 2 secured in position on the open end of the said casing 1 by means of the annular ring 3. The rearwall -of the aforesaid casing 1 is substantially concavo-convex as shown at 4, and a source of light, in the present instance an electric incandescent lamp 5, is supported therein. The electric light 5, as shown in the drawing, is supplied from a source of current by means of the wires 6.

I provide within the interior chamber 7 a lamp 9 shown in" the drawing to be an incandescent electric lamp. In order to supply electric current to the said lamp 9, or if the same were a gas lamp, in order to supply gas to the same, I provide a conduit 10 formed in the rear Wall within the said IVhileI casing 7, said conduit 10 being in commuincandescent type, wires 14 are provided for supplying electric current to the same. The wires 6 and the wires 14 are independently controlled by switches on the dashboard of the vehicle, the 1 said switches not being shown as it is not thought they are necessary in the present instance.
In use when it is wished to obtain a dim light the lamp 5 is lighted and the radiance emanating-from the said lamp 5 willpass out inltheform of an annular ring of light. said ring of light being formed by virtue of thechamber'j' being in spaced relation to the chamber 1 andthe'periphery 15 of the said chamber 7 together with the inner periphery 15' of the outer'chamber 1 will provide. an. annular space. 16 between the .said inner and'ou'ter chambers,aand thus provide the aforesaid rlngof light. To ob- It will be seen from the aforesaid descrip thin that I have provided a headlight, which is both cheap to manufacture and simple in construction, and while I have shown aspecific arrangement of parts and construction, it will be readily lmderstood by those skilled in the art that certain minor changes in the details, such as the substitution of a gas for an electric lamp may be made, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim and wish to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device as specified, including a plurality of concentrically arranged casings,
each of which is provided with an independent light source, all of said light sources being capable of use independently or collectively to vary the intensity of the light, substantially as described.

3. A device as specified, including a plurality of permanently spaced apart nested casings, light sources associated with each casing and capable of independent or collective control relative to each other, sub stantially as described.
4. A device as specified, including a plurality of concentrically nested casings, each of said casings being in spaced relation to each other, light sources associated with each of said casings, said light sources being independently or collectively controllable, and adapted to project light between the said concentric casings, substantially as described.
5. A device as specified, including a plurality of nested casings, means for supporting the aforesaid casingsin permanent spaced relation, and a light source provided .in each of said casings, capable of lighting collectively or independently,- substantially as described. A device as specified, including a plurality of spaced apart nested casings, a lamp associated with each, bracket elements for supporting the casings in spaced relation, and certain of said supportingelements com prising means for supplying an illuminating agent to each of said light sources.
7. A device as specified, including a plu-' rality of spaced apart nested casings, light sources associated with each of said casings and adapted for collective or independent illumination, the inner surface of said casings provided with reflector means, and the portion adjacent the light source being substantially concavo-convex in contour, whereby to form areflector for said light source.
8. A device as specified, including a plurality of concentrically nested casings, said casings being substantially frusto -conical in contour, a light source in each capable of independent or; collective lighting, said casings being substantially similar in configuration.
9. A device as specified, including a plurality of spaced apart nested concentric casings, and" a light source in each arranged substantially in alinement with the longi-- tudinal axis of the concentric casings and capable, of independent or collective use.
