T 0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADA F. THoRNBuns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkin, in the county of Surry and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating-Flue Constructions for Buildings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in heating flue constructions for buildings and comprises a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4E is-a view on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings'by letter, A, A designate two columns of masonry, spaced apart as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, and are adapted to be in the partition wall B C, C designateironplates which are semicylindrical and having flanged edges fastened to the opposite sides of the masonry columns A and forming a heat radiating means.
Mounted between the masonry columns are the tanks D which are of any size and shape, preferably with opposite walls concaved and as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings and which are supported by the projecting blocksof masonry E. An 1nlet pipe H is provided for the introduction of water into the tanks and an exit pipe 1 leading from the pipe'F which'connects the tanks forms means whereby water may pass from the tanks. steam may escape. The tanks are provided with a suitable water gage J and safety valve F It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings that lines N are formed intermediate each tank and the outer metallic wall 0 and which form means through which the heat may be directed when the dampers O and O are swung to the-positions shown in solid lines in Fig. 2, said flues being closed when the dampers assume the position shown in dotted lines in the same figure. A grate L is formed in an opening at the bottoms of the lines, extending the entire width of the fines and also between the columns of masonry and a blower Q with a suitable handle Q is adapted to close the opening in the flue, while a removable plate Q is placed in the wall at the opposite end of the grate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. Other grates, designated by letter S, are provided, adapted to be positioned in the second story of the building and secured to said tanks, affording means whereby fires may be built in said grates S when desired, and'in which event trays S are inserted in each flueand supported by the bracket members T. The dampers O and 0 have fastened thereto the rods 0 and 0 respectively, and'to the rod 0 a handle 0 is pivotally connected, said rods passing through apertures in-one of the plates forming the walls of the fines and forming convenient means for throwing the dampers into one or another of their operative positions. It will be noted'that the damper O has its lower end projecting below the damper 0' and is recessed for the reception of the free end of the damper O to make a tight joint.
While I have shown tanks forming the inner walls of the fines and adapted for the reception of water, thereby affording means for utilizing waste heat for heating the same, it will be understood that these tanks may contain a filler of any heat resisting material, if desired, so that, when the dampers are closed in the position shown in solid lines to allow heat to pass up through the flues to heat rooms above, the. tankshaving heat resisting material will cause the heat to be radiated outwardly.
'What I claim to be new is A chimney apparatus adapted to radiate heat, comprising a partition with masonry columns therein spaced apart, metallic plates spanning the space between said columns and fastened thereto, tanks mounted dampers adapted to alternately close said 10 central and side flues.
