LAMP-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 27, 1915.
Application ledOctober 31, l1912. Serial No. 728,822.
To allai/710121 1' t muy concern.'
Be it known that I, Janus C. RAMSEY, J r., acitizenoffthe United States, residing at Andover, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Lamp-Support, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a supporting and operating device for an electric lamp for use on automobiles and the like.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a simple and inexpensive construction by which the lamp can be controlled and especially by which it can be' turned about two axes transverse to each other by a simple rotary motion of a handle to secure one turning motion and b vvreciprocation of the handle or a part thereof to secure the other turning motion. I
The invention also involves improvements v in details of construction and combinations of parts as will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a part of an automobile showing how a preferred form of this invention can be applied thereto;
` Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of the lamp support; Fig. 3-is central longitudinal sectional view at right angles thereto;l and Fig. 4 lis a sectional view on the line 4 4: of Fig. 2.
The invention is shown as applied to the dash of an automobile. For this purpose a support 10 is provided extending up from the dash and having a horizontally extending end or pivot 11. This is provided withl a circumferential groove 12 and on it fits a hub on a frame 13.' This frame is provided with a screw 11i projecting-into the groovel 12 so that the frame can be turned on the cylindrical end 11 as a pivot. The hub which fits on this pivot is slit longitudinally and in order to secure it in fixed position on the pivot a collar 15 is provided having a set screw 16 for tightening it. The pivot is lubricated preferably by a piece .of felt or wick 17 located in a slot in the hub and held in place by a plate 18.
The member 13'is supplemented by a second member 2O and these together form a hollow casing or frame for some of the operating-parts of the device. Extending from this casin is a hollow handle 21 through which pro]ects a hollow rod 22. On the end of this rod is a hand-hold 23 for manipulating it, and it tits in a bushing 21 at the end of the handle. The rod 22 enters a guide slot 24 at the other end of the casing and is provided with a rack 25 which meshes with a pinion 26 on a shaft 27 supported in bearings in the casing and projectingfrom the top thereof. On this shaft is fixed a hub 28 which constitutes an-extension of the lamp casing 29. Through this hub -extend the wires 30 for conducting a current to the lamp, and these wires are connected through an opening 31 in the shaft and an opening 32 in the rod with a push button construction 33 on the hand hold. They then pass down through the support 10. In this waythe wires are entirely inclosed and concealed, and so are the other working parts.
The operation is very simple. If it is -de sired to turn the lamp about the horizontal pivot 11, this is done simply by swinging the handle through the-desired arc. If the lamp has to be turned on a vertical axis or an axis transverse to the axis ofthe pivot 11, the hand-hold is simply moved in or out as the case may be, to turn the shaft 27 and thus swing the lamp. The two parts of the casing can be taken apart very easily for inspection and repairs. Thus a very simple device is provided for this purpose, and capable of swinging the lamp through a wide arc on its vertical axis and through an unlimited arc on its horizontal axis.
Vhile I have illustrated and described onlyone form of the invention I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited in these respects, but i What I do claim is 1. In a device 'of the character described, the combination of a4 lamp frameV mounted to turn about a vhorizontal axis, said frame being provided with a rigid handle projecting therefrom by which the frame can be turned about said horizontal axis, a` rod movable longitudinally along the handle, a lamp casing mounted above said frame, a/nd means whereby the rcciprocation of said rod will turn the lamp casing on said frame on an axis at an angle to said horizontal axis.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a lamp frame arranged to turn about a horizontal axis, said frame being provided with a handle projecting therefrom by which the frame can be turned about said axis, a shaft carried by said frame, a rod movable longitudinally along the handle, means whereby the reciprocation of said rod will turn said shaft on an axis at an angle to said horizontal axis, and a lamp casing xed with respect to said shaft, said shaft and rod being provided vith passages for conducting wires tothe 8.P]n a device of thecharacter described, the combination of a lamp frame'mounted j to swingvabout ahorizontal axis, said frame being provided with a handle projecting therefrom by which the frame can be turned about said` horizontal axis, a rod movable longitudinally along the handleand having av rack thereon, a pinion meshing with said rack, a shaft on which the pinion is located,
a lamp casing xed with respect tosaid shaft, said shaft and rod being provided with passages therethrough for the conducting wires to thelamp, and a support for the frame having a' passage therethrough for the conducting wires.
4. In a device of 'the character described, the combination of a lamp frame mounted to turn about an axis, said frame being provided with a hollow handle projecting therefrom by which the frame can be turned about said axis, a hollow rod movable'longitudinally in the handle and having a push button and a rack thereon, a pinion meshing with said rack, a hollowshaft on which the pinion is located, a lamp casing fixed with respect to said shaft, a support for the frame having a passage therethrough, and con-A i ducting wires passing from' the lamp through the shaft, and rod to said push but. ton, and through the rod and support said push button.4
In testimony whereof'I have hereunto seit my hand, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
