DRESS-WEIGHT.
LIMLSSO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1915.
Application filed October 9, 1912. Serial No. 724,687.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownl that I, MAX Mrrrnunonrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vyomissing, inthe county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress- IVeights, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates particularly to dress-Weight edging material, and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter fully described in connection With the accompanying drawings, the novel features of which are specifically pointed out in the subjoined claim.
Metal Weighting-pieces have been heretofore combined With strips of narrow fabric so as to form fiexible edging adapted to suitably Weight a dress skirt or the like when attached thereto, but my invention provides a novel construction having advantages of economy in production as Well as of appearance, lasting quality, and convenience in use.
Figure l presents a simple form of Weighted braid embodying` my invention, a part of the tubular portion being in longitudinal section so as to show clearly the inclosed Weighting pieces. Fig. 2 shows separately a series of the strung-together Weighting pieces, the latter being represented as of different form from those indicated in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similar vieW to Fig. l showing a further modification in the form and arrangement of the Weighting pieces. Fig. i is a cross-sectional vieu7 showing a fabric strip of slightly modified form.
The fabric strip shown comprises parallel integrally formed flat and tubular portions, a and Z), extending lengthwise thereof; such strip being readily produced continuously upon a known form of braiding machine. 'Ihe tubular portion 7o of the fabric strip incloses a series of separately formed Weighting pieces so as to provide a flexible Weighted edge thereon as indicated; these Weighting pieces being short lengths c of sheet lead which are folded and clamped upon a connecting string CZ and adapted to the size of the fabric tube b, as indicated in Fig. l, or small balls c similarly strung, as
indicated in Fig. 2; said pieces in either case being preferably spaced apart as desired. This string of weighting pieces is preferably combined with the fabric strip a; during the forming of the latter, by arranging the same in the axial line of the tubular portion Z2 of said strip during the braiding operation so that the pieces are successively drawn to the braiding point and covered by the interlacing threads.
In the modification indicated in Fig. 3, the str-inging together of the Weighting pieces as above described, is dispensed with, the tubular portion b of the fabric strip being Weighted instead with a line of balls c2 adapted thereto, such as ordinary shot or small bullets, which balls may practically contact With each other and yet provide the requisite flexibility. In such case the combining of the Weighting balls with the fabric during the formation of the latter, so as to produce a completed product continuously Without subsequent operation, as in the Fig. l construction described, Would involve suitable provision for feeding the balls successively to the tubular braiding point, as will be readily understood.
In order that the Weighted strip may be adapted to most satisfactorily attaching it in all cases, I have found it desirable to provide for conveniently and neatly drawing the same; and for this purpose I insert a Warp thread e in the flat portion a, of the fabric during the braiding operation, in such manner that it Will serve as a draiv string and permit of shaping the WeightedV braid to curves of the dress as may be desired.
What I claim is A dress-Weight composed of a fabric strip having continuous parallel longitudinal portions respectively fiat and tubular in form, a series of Weighting pieces in said tubular portion, and a draw-string Warp thread in said flat portions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tivo Witnesses.
MAX MITTENDORFF.
