Beit lmownthat I, WILLIAM P. STUBBLB- FIELD, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing in `the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented cer` tain new and useful Improvements in Step- Molds, of which the following is a specication, this being a division of my application filed February 26, 1912, Serial No. 680,100. l l f l l A This invention relates to step molds, and moreespecially tethat class of molds that are used for'the building of steps of concrete construction. I i v The primary object of this invention is in the combination and arrangement of parts in a device lof this' character whereby the step molds can be readilyadjusted to their required pitch.
Another' object is to provide improved side boards having segmental ends so that said side boards can be readily adjusted to the desired angle on which the steps are` to be built.
A further object is to provide means whereby these side boards are self-adjusting to the base lines or foot of the steps andto the vertical line or wall to which the steps are to be built up,
A. still further object is to provide improved adjusting means for these side boards so that the flight of steps can be-made to any desired height; and bythe segmental adjustment, any desired angle for the flight of steps can beobtained. y x

The subject matter of this application originally formed a portion of co-pending application Serial No. ary 26, 1912.
Referring to the drawings, the side boards are composed of sections 1, each of said sections being provided with a top iiange 2, a bottom liange 3, and a lug 4 at each end, said lug 4 depending from the top flange 2 and adapting the sections to be detachably secured together by means of bolts 5, or other suitable fastenings. When a number of these sections 1 are mounted together, the top and bottom sections 6 of each side board are preferably provided with arcuate lianges `7 to adapt them to bear upon the flanged `mounted through bearing lugs 11, said bearing lugs being mounted on the sections 1. Said bearing is provided with a set screw 12 for rigidly clamping the tie rods. The lower segment 8 and its component part 6 are held together by the tie rod 13, said tie rod being pivotally mounted to the said segment by the stud 14, said tie rod 13 being mounted to the sections 6 through the bearing 15. Mounted on the tie rod 13, adjacent the stud 14, is a pocket 16 having a set screw 17 located therein, said pocket being for the purpose which will be hereinafter described.
Mounted in the peripheral flanges of the segment 8 adjacent theV arcuate ianges 7 are slots 18 through which are mounted locking bolts 19, said locking bolts being carried by the arcuate iianges 7. Pivotally mounted on the upper segment 8 by studs 20 is a connecting sleeve 21, saidsleeve having a pocket .22 located thereon and a set screw 23 mountn 680,100, med Febfued in said pocket. Mounted on the upper section 6 is a bearing 24 through which the sleeve 21 is mounted. The peripheral flange of the segment 8 and arcuate flange 7 of the section 6 are locked in position by the lock bolt 25. Mounted in the bearings 15 and 24e of the section 6 are set screws 26.
In the operation of this improved device, when the desired angle of the flight of steps to be constructed is given, the desired number of sections 1 are mounted together on the sectional tie rods 10. And the lowest sectional tie rod is mounted to the tie rod 13 of the lower segment S, and the uppermost tie rod is mounted in the sleeve 21 ofthe upper segment 8. The lower segment 8 is then mounted on the basing line, and the upper segment is mounted against a vertical line. Then this whole construction forming the side boards is manipulated until the desired angle of the flight of steps has been obtained. Then, the locking bolts 19 and 25, along with the set screws 26, are tightened. Metallic stakes, such as 27, are then mounted in the pockets 22 and 16 of the upper and lower segments 8, and are driven deeply into the ground, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Then the set screws 23 and 17 are tightened against the stakes. This will hold the side boards securely in position. After these sidey boards are in position, the step molds, vor facing boards, such as 28, are mounted in between these side boardstheir proper dismerely fastening them to this improved con? tances apart. These facing boards, as shown, are mounted in the L-braclrets 29, said L-br'ackets being mounted to each other `by the bolts 30, and are clamped against the side boards by the clamping screws 31. This embodiment shown of adjustable step mold facing boards is immaterial to this invention, as any desired type can be used by struction of side boards, as this invention consists in the improved construction of being able to aline the side boardsto the desired angle of which the steps are to be constructed.
Referring again to Fig. 5, the tie rods 10 are provided at one end with the threaded stud 32, and at their opposite end with a threaded socket 33.
What I claim is:
1. In a side board for step molding construction, the combination of pivotal segmental abutments located at the ends of said board, said abutments adapting said board to be disposed at different angles, said side board being constructed in sections adapted to be secured to each other, and means for locking said abutments to said side board, the inner faces of said sections adapted to aline flush with the inner faces of said abutments.

A step mold comprising side boards, and adjustable abutments, said abutments adapting said side boards to be disposed at different angles with respect vto horizontal and vertical supports, and locking means for engagement with the peripheries of said abutments for locking said abutments to their respective side boards, said side boards and said abutments having their inner faces flush with each other.
3. A step mold comprising side boards, adjustable step forms carried by said side boards, and a segmental abutment adjustably mounted at the ends of each of said side boards, the .inner faces of said sideboards adapted to alineiiush with the inner faces of said abutments.
4t. A step mold` comprising side boards, adjustable step forms carried by said side boards, segmental `abutments adjustably mounted at opposite ends of said side boards,
anda sectional tie rod secured to each of boards, each section of each of said side boards being slidably mounted on a tie rod, a segmental abutment pivotally mounted on each end of said tie rods, and locking means carried'by each end section of each of said side boards for rigidly securing said side boards to said abutments, said side boards having their inner faces flush with theirrespective abutments.
7. In a knock-down form for step molding construction, a pair of sectional side boards, each section of eachzfof said'side boards being mounted on a tie rod, each of said rods having a telescoping section, a segmental abutment pivotally mounted on each end of said tie` rods, adjustable stepV forms carried by said side boards, and locking means fory rigidly securing said side boards to said abutments.
8'.
