i7 10 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, .loi-1N B. NAINTEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spindles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to spinning frames and has special reference to mountings or bearings for the spindles used in such frames.
In the usual spindle mountings oiling is accomplished through an open hole or tube and the amount of oil suppliedy at one time is thereby necessarily limited. Furthermore, dust and foreign substances can enter the usual oil hole and they not only-tend to clog the oil passages but also to injure the spindle.
Another disadvantage incident to the spindle mountings with which I am acquainted, is that under the rapid rotation of the spindle, the oil which has been fed into the space between the usual bolster and the spindle will climb o-r work its way up the spindle to a point above the spindle mounting, thence dropping or flowing down on top of the mounting so that, not only is the upper exterior portion of the spindle coated withvoil, but the ymountingis likewise exteriorly so coated, and consequently the band or belt passing around the whirl is liable to be soiled, as is also the arm itself. Furthermore, in the ordinary type of spindle mounting there is employed a tongue or catch which is located at one side of and projects over the top of the whirl, this catch or tongue being usually mounted on toprof the oil chamber. AThe result is `that it is in the way of the band or belt which passes around the wheel, and as the belt in its travel is liable to flap' orwabble, it strikes against` this catch or .tongue and consequently is rapidly worn out, so that it is frequently broken.
To obviate the above recited disadvantages incident to the ordinary type of spindle, I propose to provide an oil baliiing member,which is carried by the yspindle and is located in a small chamber or space between the top of a sleeve surrounding the bolster, so that, as the oil works upthe spindle it will strike this baffle and be deflected downward into thev chamber. In other words, by means' of this baille, located in such chamber aforesaid, the oil is prevented working up the spindle above the spindle mounting. I also prevent the wearing or injuringl of the band or belt passing over the whirl bylocating 'the oil chamber below the whirl and providing the latter with a cover or top which is devoid, of all hooks, clips,- tongues or other projections, which are liableto catch or contact with `the belt or` band passing over the whirl.
.Another object of the invention is to provide an improved spindle mounting wherein the oil will be kept in a suitabley reservoir or cupso that it may at ally times be supplied to the spindle. V
Acfurther object of the invention is to provide an improvedv adjustment-for such spindlesv wherein the spindle may be adjusted and the oil baffling member of the spindle properly located relative to theannular inturned flange at `the top ofthe/sleeve surrounding the spindle without making it necessary to stop the machine. In carrying out* the objects of-this invention there is provided the usual spindle l having the tapering' upper end 2 4and the tapering lower end 3, the flatter v.constituting the cone foot step bearing for` the spin,- dle. I rictionally engaged upon the spindle is a sleeve 4, whereon is formed a whirl 5 of the usual type and by means of which the spindle is rotated. Mounted upon said sleeve 4 is a bobbin holding device 6. All of the foregoing parts are preferably of any one of the standard commercial types.
lt is to be understood that the usual seriesh of spindles are employed and that the machine is equipped with the usual spindle rail S. For each of the spindles in the machine there is provided a sleeve 7 which is set into the spindle rail as at 7 and is locked in position in the rail by a suitable nut 7 u. Each of these sleeves is provided immediately above the threaded portion with a cylindrical portion 9 and below this threaded portion is a second reduced cylindrical portion 11. lntermediate the length of the spindle and positioned above the rail is a cup 12 which surrounds said sleeve and thus forms an annular oil receiving chamber. T he upper end of the sleeve is preferably of less diameter than the portion 9 and eX- tends upward above the cup as indicated at 13. rlhe interior 14 of this portion of the sleeve is likewise of less dia-meter than the interior 15 of the central portion of said sleeve while the lower end of the sleeve has an opening therein reduced and threaded as at 16. rlhe upper end of said sleeve has its opening kalso reduced and threaded as at 17. Extending from an annular chamber formed by the cup 12 and communicating with the interior 15 ofsaid sleeve is a plurality of oil ports 18. The cup 12 is likewise provided, near its upper edge with a lateral oil port 19. Beneath the oil port 19 the cup is provided with a threaded recess 20 and opposite said recess the wall of the cup is bored to provide a vertical recess 21. Slidable in the vertical recess 21 is a pin 22 provided with a conical point 22 and beneath the lower end of this pin is a spring 23 which urges the pin upward. The cua 12 is preferably filled with fibrous materia l as indicated at 24.
Mounted on the cup 12 is the cap 26 having in its top 27 an opening 28 to receive the sleeve 7. This cap is likewise provided with an oil port 29 which may be caused to register with the port 19 by rotation of the cap on the cup and in order to limit the amount of such rotation the cap is provided with a peripheral slot 30 which registers with the recess 20, a screw 32 passing through said slot and engaging the recess so that the cap may be turned to a certain eX- tent in either direction while7 at the same time, it cannot be removed from the cup without unscrewing the screw 32. The top of this cap is also provided on its under side these ports out of registry. In connection reduced as at 36 and the portions 35 and 3G are provided with a suitable opening or bore 37 wherein the end 3 of the spindle fits closely. rlhe lower end of this bolster is enlarged and threaded as at 38 so that it engages the threaded portion 16 of the sleeve 7 and this lower end is provided with a cylindrical bore 39 for purpose hereinafter to be described. Suitable screw driver slots are also provided in this bolster and oil ports 41 extending laterally through the central portion of said bolster. At 43 is shown the adjusting screw which carries a cylindrical boss 44 forming the foot step bearing for the spindle and this screw is also threaded into the portion 16 of the sleeve 7, being provided with a screw driver slot for the purpose of adjustment. At 47 is shown a lock nut for the adjusting screw and this lock nut is provided with the spanner hole 48 and the threads 49 to enga ge the c threaded portion of the screw 43.
In oiling the device', which may be done while the machine is running, the cap is turned until the ports 19 and 29 are in registry. The nozzle of the oiler is inserted and the cup filled with oil. This oil will pass out through the port 18 and port 41 to the spindle end 3. The adjustment of the device may also be done while the machine is running by loosening the lock nut 47 and turning the screw 43 to the right or left as desired.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the upper end of the sleeve is formed with an annular inturned flange producing a reduced threaded opening or bore 17 hereinbefore mentioned, and as this flange, which is indicated at 17 lies spaced from the upper end of the bolster, a small chamberl is produced by the flange 17', the top end of the bolster and the portion of the wall of the sleeve lying between the bolster and the flange. The spindle is provided with a collar having internal screw threads running in the same direction as the threads of the flange 17 so that in setting the spindle in operative position the collar may be screwed through the bore 17 at the top of the sleeve until it Alies within the chamber formed as aforesaid. This collar performs an important two-fold function. Not only does it prevent the accidental disengagement of the spindle or its bearing, that is to say prevents the spindle from jumping upwarrh but primarily it acts as an oil baille. The oil as it is supplied from the oil cup or receptacle, passes through the oil ports or passages 18 to the space between the sleeve and bolster of the `spindle and thence throi'lgh the port 41 to the spindle. ln the rapid rotation of the spindle the oil will -'climb or j travel upward lthereon, and were it not for this battling collar 55, such oil would continue it way up the spindle to the eXterior of the complete housing, and would notonly coat the upper portion of the spindle, lbut` would overflow onV the housing and consef quently `would not only collect dirt and grit, thus soiling the parts, but would be liable to soil the belts passing over the whirls, and also in some cases' soil the yarn, as small particles of oil would be liable to be thrown off in the rapid rotation of the spindle. With my construction, however, it is impossible for 4the oil to escape: to the exterior of the Ahousing and to coat the upper portion of the spindle, for it has been foundin actual use that the oil will be confined within the licusy ing and will not escape therefrom, as is the case vwith ordinary spindle housings with which I am acquainted. Thus, I not only save the oil, and maintain the spindle and its bearings in a comparatively clean state, but I also avoid the liability of soiling the work and the belts or bands of the whirls. It will be noted that while the collar may be screwed through the bore of the flange at the top of the sleeve to bring'it within the chamber, such collar will prevent the .upward movement of the spindle and the accidental removal of the'same from the sleeve, as the spindle can only be removed by unscrewing the collar through" the threaded bore 17. There has thus been providedl a simple and efficient device of the kind described and ofthe character specied.
It will be obvious that many minor changes may be made in the forni and construction of this ini ention withou departing from the material principlestliereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the eXact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as come properly within the scope claimed.
' It will also be observed that this prevents this spindle from being withdrawn during dofling of the bobbins.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

The combination with a spindle and al bolster for receiving' the lower portion of the spindle, a sleevev surrounding the bolster and projecting above theupper end of the bolster, means for supplying oil to the spindle at a point below the upper end of thel bolster, and van oil battling member mounted 8. The combination with a spindle and ay bolster for receiving the lower portion of. the spindle, a sleeve surrounding the bolster and projecting above theupper end ofthe bolster, means for supplying oil tothe spinj dle at'a point below the upper end of the bolster, an oil baffling member mounted on the spindle and located between the upper end of the bolster and the top portion of the sleeve for preventing the oil passing up the spindle and through the `top end of the sleeve, and means carried at the lower end of the bolster and upon which the lower end of the spindle rests, for `moving the spindle `to :adjust theioil baffling member relative to the top vend of the sleeve. l l
4.' The combination with a spindle and a` bolster for receiving the lower yportion of the spindle, said bolster having an oilpas sage leading to thespindle, of a sleeve'surrounding thebolster'` and vprojecting at'its upper end above the bolster, said sleeve `having an inturned flange forming a reduced port through which the spindle passes, said ioo flange forming a chamber in-conjunction with the upper end of the spindle and the adjacent wall section of the sleeve, an oil receptacle carried by the sleeve and located below the upper end thereof, said chamber having oil passages for supplying oil to thek space between the sleeve and the bolster, vand an oil baffling collar carried by the spindle and located in the aforesaid chamber.
5. The combination with a spindle having an oil baliling collar mounted thereon, of a bearing for the spindle, a sleeve surrounding the spindle and provided with an f inturned flange located above the collar and through which the collar carried by the spindle is passed in setting the spindle in the bearing, and means lcarried by the sleeve for supplying oil to the bearing and to the spindle at a point below the collar.
6. The combination-with a spindle and a bolster for receiving the lower portion of the spindle, said bolster having an oil passage leading to the spindle, of a sleeve surrounding the bolster and terminatingat its upper end above the-bolster, the upper end of said sleeve `having l an annularinturned formed around the spindle between the upper end of the bolster and the flange, an oil .threaded flange', whereby a -chamber `is ,l l
receptacle carried by the sleeve at a point below the chamber and provided with oil passages for carrying oil to the space between the sleeve and the bolster, an eXteriorly threaded oil loa-tiling collar carried by the spindle and adapted to be threaded through the bore of the threaded flange to lie in the aforesaid chamber when the spindle is in operative position, said collar preventing the passage of oil up the spindle past the top of the sleeve, and a stud carried at the lower end of the sleeve and upon which the lower end of the spindle is adapted to rest, said stud being adjustable to adjust the oil battling collar relative to the flange at the top of the sleeve.
7.*The combination with a spindle, of a spindle mounting therefor including a sleeve and an oil cup arranged intermediate of and surrounding the sleeve, said cup having an annular wall provided with an oil inlet port, said cup also having an oil port leading to the interior of the sleeve, and a cap having an approximately circular platelike top wall provided with a central opening for the passage of the sleeve, and an annular liange depending from said top wall and fitting over the annular wall of the cup, said cap being loosely fitted to turn on the sleeve and cup and having its annular flange provided with an oil inlet port adapted to be turned into and out of register with the oil port in the annular wall of the cup.

The combination with a spindle, of a spindle housing including a sleeve having a reduced opening through the upper end thereof, an oil receptacle surrounding the sleeve, a bolster mounted in the sleeve and provided with a reduced central portion spaced from the walls of the sleeve to forni an annular space, said bolster having oil ports opening into the space, said receptacle having oil ports leading to the space between the bolster' and sleeve, and an oil bai:-
