To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Poncn Pninow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cornersville, in the county, of Marshall and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Plow Attachment, of which'the following is-a specification.
The present invention appertains to a plow attachment, and relates more particularly to a subsoiler attachment for turning or kindred plows.
This invention contemplates the provision of a subsoiling attachment for plows, whichtured, which may be readily applied to yarious plows, and which will be convenient,
serviceable, eflicient and thoroughly practical in use.
"With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement ofparts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without de' parting from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the attachment as applied to a turning plow, the subsoiling device being illustrated in operative position in full lines, and in inoperative or idle position in dotted lines. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are enlarged sectional views taken on the lines 22, 3-3 and 44, respectively, of Fig. 1.

handles-3i The present attachment is applied to the beam 2, and is applicable to various plow structures, as will be obvious.
The present attachment embodles a beam or bar 4 having its rear end portion curved downwardly, as at 5, and a subsoiling blade or point 6 is secured upon the rear or lower end of the beam or bar 4-. The blade 6 is inclined properly in order that "when it is en- T gaged to the soil, it will work itself down wardly into the soil to the desired depth, for
stirring or working the subsoil. The forward orupper end portion of the beam 4 is reflexed or bent back, as at'a', to form a hook engageable around the downwardly'curved portion of the beam 2 above the plow 1, whereby the supplemental beam or bar 4: will trail from the main beam 2 in rear of the plow 1. .In order to retain the beam or bar l in place, a bolt or other retaining element 8 is engaged through the end of the refleXed portion or 11001: 7 and the body of the beam 4 in rear of the beam 2. When the bolt 8.
is removed, the beam 4 may be readily applied to or removedfrom the plow beam 2, and the hook 7 provides a convenient means for attaching the subsoiler beam t to the 3 plow beam. 7
In connection with the subsoiler beam 4:,
there is provided a device for holding or retaining the same in operative position, and for lifting or raising the subsoiler beam to inoperative or idle position. This device includes aclamp 9, which comprises the side clamping bars or plates 10 terminally connected by the clamping bolts 11, whereby the clamp 9 may be readily applied to the plow beam 2 above the hook 7 of the subsoiler beam 4. A pivot bolt 12 is engaged through one bar or section 10 of the clamp 9, and has pivoted thereto, the forward end ofa retainer and lifting bar 13, which projects rearwardly, and which has its rear :or free end twisted and bent into an angular downwardly projecting portion 14. An eye bolt or other attaching element 16 is secured to the rear or free'e nd portion of the retainer bar 13, andha's attached thereto one end of a rope or other flexible element 17 which may be tied or otherwise fastened to the upper portion of the handles 3 of the plow, when desired, for holding the retainer bar 13 and subsoiler beam & raised.
The upper edge of the subsoiler beam 4. is provided with a ll-shaped notch 18 00- operating with the angular portion lt of the retainer bar 18, and providing a shoulder 19 upon which the angular portion 14: of the bar 13 is adapted to drop or seat when the subsoiler beam 4: is lowered to operative position.
In use, it being evident that the present device may be readily applied to the plow beam 2, when the rope 17 is loosened to enable the trailing subsoiler beam 4t and retainer bar 13 to drop downwardly, the subsoiler blade or point 6 will engage and work downwardly into the soil below the furrow made by the plow 1. The subsoiling device in trailing in rear of the plow 1, will thus work or stir the subsoil, which is de sirable for obvious reasons. Vhen the subsoiler beam l is swung downwardly to operative' position, as illustrated in full lines in Fig. 1, theretainer bar 13 will also swing downwardly, and the angular or free end portion 14 thereof will drop downwardly into the notch 18 of the beam 1 and will. seat upon the shoulder 19 formed by the notch 18, to hold or brace the subsoiler beam 4 in its lowered or active position. Ihis will prevent the subsoiler blade 6 from being raised or thrown out of operative position. Should the subsoiler blade 6 encounter a rock or other unyielding obstruction, the blade 6 may be readily raised above the soil by pulling upwardly on the rope 17, which will raise the bar 13 to first disengage the bar 13 from the notch 18 of the subsoiler beam d, and to then raise the subsoiler beam to inoperative or idle position as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The subsoiling device may thus readily pass the obstruction, in which event it may again be lowered to operative position.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawing, the advantages and salient features of the invention will be obvious to those versed in the art.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cent Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, an oscillatory beam having an earth engaging point, an oscillatory retainer member mounted above the said beam and having means through which the beam is slidable, the beam having means for the engagement of the said means to hold the beam lowered, and means for lifting the said member.
2. In a device of the character described, an oscillatory beam having an earth engaging point, an oscillatory retainer bar mounted above the beam, and having a downwardly projecting angular portion provided with a slot through which the beam extends, and the beam having a notch for the engagement of the said angular portion when the beam is lowered.
3. In a device of the character described, an oscillatory beam having an earth engagin g point, an oscillatory retainer bar mounted above the beam, and having adown wardly projecting angular portion provided with a slot through which the beam extends, the beam having a notch for the engagement of the said angular portion when the beam is lowered, and means for raising the said retainer bar.
1. A subsoiler attachment for plows comprising a subsoiler beam having means at one end for loosely engaging a plow beam to trail in rear thereof, the rear end of the subsoiler beam having a soil engaging point, a clamp engageable to the plow beam above the subsoiler beam, a retainer bar pivoted to the clamp, the retainer bar having a downwardly projecting portion slidably engaging the subsoiler beam, the subsoiler beam having an upper notch for the engagement of said downwardly projecting portion when the subsoiler beam is lowered, and means for lifting the retainer bar.
