CARRIER.
Application filed March 9, 1915. -Seria1No. 13,229.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PORTER O. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concord Junction, in the county of Middle sex and State of Massachusetts, have in-- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention has reference to improvements in carriers having a pair or series of containers which carriers are adapted to be used to contain water or other liquids when said containers are removed. One object of this invention is to provide a convenient carrier adapted to receive a series of containers which combined closely fit within said carrier whereby the space occupied by said carrierdoes not greatly exceed the dimensions of said group of containers and whereby, when said containers are removed, said carrier may be utilized for other purposes. I
Another object of the invention is to pro vide an improved carrier comprising a group of containers of which one constitutes a holder for others and is of novel construction.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.
The invention consists in such novel features of construction and combination. of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully de scribed and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1, represents a plan view of the improved container. Fig. 2, represents a sectional view of the same taken on line 22 Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
This improved carrier in its preferred form shown in the drawings comprises the outer container or casing member 5 of rectangular shape and of a length exceeding its width. At one end the side walls 6, 6 are cut away at an angle, at their upper portions, and are provided with the inclined wall 7 which is extended toward but not to the vertical median line of said sides 6, 6 by the wall or apron 8 of rigid material. The inclined wall 7 is provided with the outlet spout .9 which is included within the rectangle defined by the exterior surface planes of the apron 8 and the end 5 and the top of which spout extends in the exterior surface plane of said apron. At. one side of the vertical medlanline-of the sides 6, 6- is pivotally Specification-of Letters Patent. Patqgnted uly 29, 19 15;
mounted the bail or handle10 which is adapted to swing down between said sides fi,
6 as is shown in Fig.1.. 7 g i The carrier or container .mem-ber thus described is of a shape particularly adapted to bestored in an automobile or wherever economy of space is desirable because of its rectangular exterior and such carrier member is of great utility in the exigencies that arise from time to time on an automobile tour. Said carrier may be used to transport water or other liquids or solids. Liquids may be poured therefrom through the spout I 9 and the slopping over of the liquid is prevented by the apron 8.
Within the carrier member 5 are removably contained the rectangular can or container 11 having the spout 12 and the rigid handle 13, and the container 14 having the spout 15 and the handle 16. These cans 11 and 14 have cross sectional shape and dimensions to closely fit within the carrier member 5 and the height of said cans is such that the handle 13 or can 11 may be received beneath the apron 8 which resists the upward movement of said handle 13 and its can 11, while the space above can 14 is adapted to receive the bail or handle 10 when swung downward to the position shown in Fig. 1 and indicated in Fig. 2.
contain reserve supplies respectively of gasolene and of lubricant and said cans may be removed from the carrier member 5 by swinging the bail 1O upward as shown in Fig. 2 whereby can 14 may be withdrawn.
vertically at one side of said bail. Can 11 may then be moved along the member 5 until said can 11 is brought to position to move u ward past said bail. Said cans may be replaced by reversing the operation just above described.
Preferably the carrier members 5, 11 and 14 will be constructed of metal but I do not intend to limit my invention in this or in any other respect except as hereinafter claimed. Nor is it my intention to limit myself to the construction and location of the spout or outlet 9 as shown in the drawing.
Having thus described. my invention I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent.
1. A carrier comprising a rectangular exinside of said exterior carrier member to swing below the plane of said apron, and a pair of rectangular containers closely fitting said exterior carrier member and of a height less than that of said exterior carrier member to furnish clearance for the reception of said bail when swung down.
2. A carrier comprising a rectangular exterior member having an apron at one end, an inner container carrier closely fitting between the sides of said exterior member and having a rigid handle adapted to be received beneath and held by said apron.
3. A carrier comprising a rectangular exterior carrier member having an upper bevel end furnished with a spout, an apron partially closing said carrier member, and a pivoted bail, said spout located Wholly within the exterior surface plane of said carrier member, and a pair of rectangular inner containers closely fitting said exterior carrier, one oi said inner containers having a rigid handle adapted to slidably contact with said apron.
