J. 1. KOZMOUSKI.
PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
APPLICATION Hl .E D 0CT.7.1914.
Patented July 20, 1915.
WITHEZEEEE srarns Ara GFFICE.
JOHN L. KOZMOUSKI, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. I
PORTABLE FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
' Application filed October 7, 1914. Serial No. 865,408.
and useful Improvement in Portable F ire- Extinguishers, specification.
My invention relates to portable fire exof which the following is a tinguishers and'its object is to improve and simplify the construction thereof and increase the efficiency of the same in the man ner hereinafter set forth.
Illustrative embodiments of my invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved fireextinguisher; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on an enlarged scale of the discharge nozzle; Fig. 4 is an endview; Fig. 5 is a transverse section of a modification; Figs. 6 and 7 are end views of modified forms of the discharge nipple, and Fig. 8 is a plan view of one form of spring washer that may be employed in the piston-packing hereinafter described. 7
In the particular drawings selected for more fully disclosing the invent-ion, 1 represents a reservoir adapted to contain the fire-extinguishing fluid and associated in any convenient manner with one or more pump cylinders, herein shown as two in number, the said cylinders in the present case being arranged symmetrically with respect to said reservoir and extending throughout the entire length thereof. In Fig. 2 the cylinders 2 exterior surface of the reservoir by soldering the same thereto, or by other suitable modes of attachment, and in Fig. 5 the corresponding cylinders 31 31 are shown attached to the interior surface of the reservoir. The upper ends of the cylinders are closed by caps 3 3 threaded thereto and bored to receive the piston rods. The lower ends of the cylinders are closed and communicate by means of ports 5 5 with the chamber 6 formed between the bottom 4: of the reservoir and the partition 7 which extends across the same a short distance above the bottom thereof. The valve 8 herein shown as tapering or cone-shaped, integral with or attached to the stem 9 which extends through the reservoir, is normally in engagement with a correspondingly shaped through the discharge orifice.
principle of my material, so that when 2 are attached tothe valve seat in said partition, said valve stem being provided with a boss 10 threaded to the top of the reservoir a handle 11 whereby said stemmay be rotated to adjust the positionof the valve 8. When the said valve is in the position shown, the flange 12 covers the pin-holes Patented July 20,
and provided with 13, 13 in the top of the reservoir, and when the handle 11 from its seat, and permit air to enter the reservoir.
The discharge nozzle 14, shown in detail in Fig. 3, is shown inthe ment of my invention as bottom of the reservoir,
is turned to raise the valve threaded to the said pin-holes are uncovered the conical flange present embodi- 15 making a water-tight-joint with a corre-w spondingly shaped seat. The valve 16,
herein shown as a ball-valve, is arranged to cooperate with a spherical valve seat 16 for the purpose of closing communication-between the discharge orifice her 6. The discharge nipple 17, which as 23-and the chami I shown, is threaded to thez-nozzle, is provided with a serrated inner edge 17- so that when the ball valve rests on said edge, liquid will flow from said chamber 7 p 6 The valve 18, herein shown as a cone valve, is normally-pressed by the spring-19 into engagement with its seat 20 and the;
latter as shown is in screw-threaded engagement with the nozzle'a-nd vided with a gasket 21 of lead or similar the nozzle, which is provided with flattened surfaces 14: to take the jaws of a wrench, is screwed into the bottom of the reservoir with the passageway 22 in alinement with the aperture in the partition 7, a Water-tight joint will be formed between said valve seat and partition. v
I prefer to 23, so that the extinguishing fluid will be discharged in the form of 'athin flat sheet The I 30 30 of any suitable form secured to the preferably is pro-' provide the discharge nipple 1 wlth an elongated flattened discharge orifice nipple with three small orip I other end. In Fig. 2 I have shown details of the plunger packing whichl preiierto use. This packing consists of two oppositelyarranged leather washers 27, 27, compressed between the nuts 28, 28, which are threaded to the piston rod, and interposed between each washer and its cooperating nut is a thin plate 29 of spring material, which in a manner that will be obvious, serves to force the washers against the walls oi the cylinder and thereby prevent leakage past the piston.
Operation: To fill the reservoir, the stem 9 is unscrewed by turning the handle 11, the nozzle is removed by means of a wrench or other suitable tool, the apparrtus inverted and the stock or fire-extinguishing fluid poured into the chamber 6. The valve 8 is then screwed down upon its seat and the nozzle replaced. The reservoir will thus store the stock for an indefinite time without danger of evaporation or leakage. To use the extinguisher, the valve 8 is unseated by means of the handle 11 and the handle 25 is reciprocated until the contents of the reservoir have been discharged. @n the up stroke of the plungers the valve 16 is seated, thereby closing communication from the discharge orifice 23 to the chamber 6 while the valve 18 is unseated and the liquid drawn from the reservoir through the passageway 22 and into the pump cylinders by way of. the ports 32 in the nozzle and the ports 5 5 between the chamber 6 and cylinders, respectively. On the down-stroke the cone valve is seated thereby closing communication between the ports 32 and the reservoir, and the ball valve is unseated being forced against the serrated edge 17 of the nipple, so that liquid will pass around the ball valve and out through the discharge orifice.
Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, without however limiting the same thereto, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fire-extinguisher comprising in combination a reservoir, a partition extending across said reservoir near its lower end, a pump, cylinder secured to said reservoir and having its lower end in communication with Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the chamber formed between said partition and the bottom of said reservoir, a discharge nozzle communicating with said reservoir and said chamber, oppositely-acting valves in said discharge nozzle, and a plunger in said cylinder.
2. A fire-extinguisher comprising in combination a reservoir, a partition extending across said reservoir near its lower end, a plurality of symmetrically-arranged pump cylinders secured to said reservoir and having their lower ends in communication with the chamber formed between said partition and the bottom of said reservoir, a discharge nozzle. communicating with said reservoir and said chamber, oppositely-acting valves in said discharge nozzle and a plunger in each oi said cylinders.
3. A fire-extinguisher comprising in combination a reservoir, a partition extending across said reservoir near its lower end, a pump cylinder secured to said reservoir and communicating with the chamber formed between said partition and the bottom of said reservoir, said partition being provided with a valve seat, a valve cooperating with said valve seat, and means exterior to said reservoir for adjusting the position of said valve.
4.. A fire-extinguisher comprising in combination a reservoir, a partition extending across said reservoir near its lower end, a pump cylinder secured to said reservoir and communicating with the chamber formed between said partition and the bottom of said reservoir, said partition being provided with a valve seat, a discharge nozzle secured to the bottom of said reservoir and having a passageway in alinement with said valve seat, said discharge nozzle having a port communicating with said chamber, oppositely-acting valves in said discharge nozzle, and a plunger in said cylinder.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 6th day of @ctober, 1914;.
