METHOD OF MAKING BUTTONS.
Patented July 20, 1915.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application fil ed October 16, 1914- Serial No. 867,006.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. GUYoT, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of Making Buttons,
following the first die striking thereof. Fig.v 4 is a plan View of the blank after the trimming operation during which the head is slightly reshaped by compression. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the blank after being die struck a second time. Fig. 6 is a side edge view of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the blank after being trimmed a second time. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the blank following shaping of the head thereof. Fig.
9 is a side edge view of Fig. 8, and Fig. 10 is a plan view of the completed button.
In proceeding in accordance with the present method, a blank of the form shown in Fig. l is cut from the stock, which blank has a head 1 and a flared post 2. The blank is then die struck so as to form raised portions, the head portions and the bifurcated shank or post which raised portions register on the opposite faces of the blank, as shown in Fig. 3. The next step in the method resides in trimming the blank in which the head is slightly compressed, preferably, to
give same the appearance shown in Fig. 4;,
following which the blank is die struck a second time so as toround and contract the shank 2 and the forks 3 thereof, and to also reshape the head to bring the latter closer to a bean or egg shaped configuration, as
depicted in Fig. 5 of the drawings and also in Fig. 6. The next step in the-method consists in again trimming the blank to the form shown in Fig. 7, following which the head is given a still further shape so as to flatten same into the form shown in Fig. 8, and also in Fig. 9. The final step in the method consists in forming the riveting nibs or teats 4 on the free ends of post. l
Itfwill be noted from the foregoing that the invention primarily involves the formation. of the head and posts in registering portions on the opposite side faces of the blank so that upon trimming of the blank, the complete post and head remain, and
the bifurcation of the further that, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the
post and head are formed by gradual striking of the blank, and by contracting the struck portions of Fig. 3 to the form shown in Fig.
By the gradual formation of the structure by bunching of the metal, a stronger article is produced since the metalis not subjected to any excessive strain such as might cause breaking of the blank or cracking thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new 'and desire to secure byLetters Patent The hereindescribed method of making buttons which consists of die-striking a blank to impart upraised configured formations on the opposite sides of the blank to form a head and stem; trimming off the resultant fin; die-striking the partially formed button to reshape and reduce the head and stem, trimming ofi'the resultant fin; and subjecting the'head'to a further operati on for further reshaping said head only In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
