MECHANISM non FORMING PLANTING-POTS.
of an applicationfor Letters Patent Ion planting pots filed coincidently herewith.
In the manufacture of the planting pot above referred to it .is necessary to form a rectangular blank into a cylinder bypvere lapping its ends and inserting the'termina tions of a wire through perforations inthe overlapped ends of the blank, and'to provide means for facilitating the folding of the end of the cylinder thus formed to provide an apertured bottom for the pot and I 7 Formed in the inclinedufaceof the forming supporting members therefor.
It is the object of this "invention to provide a device for facilitating the above op;
erations and by which pots ofa uniform size and construction canbe readily obtained and which is adapted to be adjusted to vary the size of the pot.
A further object is to provide a machineof the character referred to which is cheap in construction and simple. and efficient in operation, and which machine is particularly adapted for useby nurserymen and the like to enable the forming of planting pots as they are needed. 7
The invention primarily resides in a forming member ormandrel of cylindrical shape having channels on its periphery and formed with a groove on its upperend having inclined side walls terminating at their upper edges with downwardly inclined faces in,
tersecting the periphery of the forming member or mandrel and'me'ans cooperating with said channels to perforate the 'overlapped edges of a. blank bent aroundfthe forming member or mandrel.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the pot as seen from its bottom end.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted 1 124), 1915,v *hpplicationfiled February 16, 1914. SerialNo. 818,858. i i 5 preferred form of the invention in which the forming member is stationary and the blank perforating means movably mounted. Fig. 2 is .a-side elevation of a modified form of the invention in which the forming memv her is movably mounted and-the perforating member stationary. Fig. 3]is an enlargedhorizontalsectioncnthe-line 33 of Fig.1, showing the perforatingdevice in its inner most perforatingposition. Fig. 4c is a -de-' tail'horizontalsection on the line of- Fig.1. Fig. 5 is a perspective. view of the blank forming member. elevation of same showing'the blank in position thereon and illustrating the manner of inserting the fastening wire in place. v Fig. 7 1s a perspectiveview of. the completed- 'More specifically, in the prefer a cylindrical forming member'or mandrel rigidly mounted on a base 9. and preferablyinr clined" atv a slight angle to the 'vertical.
member 8 is a ooncaveidepression 10,, the
purpose of which will appear' hereinafter,'
on the base 9., which shaft is adapted to be. rocked manuallyv to move the perforating blades 14 and 15m and outfofengagement with the channels 11 and 12; and for this purpose is fitted with a crank arm 19 secured to the outer end "of the shaft and connected to, a foot lever 20 by means of alconnecting rod 21; The foot lever QO'is/pivoted at 22.
to a suitable support as .a bench leg23.
Means are provided for normally maintaining theblades 1a and 15 in their retracted position, which means is here shown as conslstlng of a spring 24 connected to the crank 'arm 19 and to' the block 9 'in such manner as to normally exert an upward pull on the "crank arm 19 to dispose the frame 16 in its rearmost position. v i
The. upper end of the forming member 8' is provided with a diametrical groove 25 Fig. 6 is a side 1 red for-m of the invention, shown in Fig. 1, 8 indicates having inclined side walls terminating at their upper edges as at 26 in downwardly inclined faces 27 intersecting the periphery of the forming member. The groove 25 is thus V-shaped in cross section and extends at right angles to the face of the blank on which the channels 11 and 12 are formed. The ends of the side walls of the groove 25 are beveled at their intersection with the periphery of the molding member as indicated at 28 to facilitate the bending of paper or similar sheet material thereover.
Mounted on the forming member 8 is a split ring 29, the ends of which are secured together by a screw 30 by which the split ring 29 can be clamped in any desired position on the forming member. The split ring 29 has a flange 31 on its upper edge, which flange forms a seat for the blank and serves as a guide or gage for positioning the blank on the forming member or mandrel.
1n the operation of the preferred form of the invention, just described, a rectangular blank 32 of paper or similar material is passed around the forming member 8 with its ends overlapping the channels 11 and 12, as particularly shown in Fig. 3; the lower edge of the blank resting on the flange 31 and the upper edge projecting a short distance above the upper end of the forming member 8, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and manually retained in this position. The frame 16 is then rocked forward through the medium of the foot lever 20 or in any other suitable manner to cause the perforating blades 14: and 15 to advance and pass through the overlapped edges of the blank 32 and enter the channels 11 and 12 and thereby form a pair of spaced perforations 33 in the blank. The frame 16 is then retracted by the action of the spring 21 and the ends of a wire 31 are introduced through the perforations 33, as shown in Fig. 6; the blank 32 being pressed into the depression 10 by the thumbs of the operator to facilitate the disposing of the wire 34 in its engaged position. The depression 10 also serves as a means to position the thumbs of the operator clear of the frame 16 and the perforating points 1% and 15, while holding the blank sheet in position on the forming member. After the wire is in place the portion of the cylinder formed by the blank projecting above the member is bent inwardly at the ends of the xi-shaped channel 25 to form the bottom members a.- and 5 of the pot, as shown in Fig. 7. The portion of the blank extending above the forming member is of such length that when inturned as just described the adjacent edges will be spaced a short distance apart to form an aperture To complete the pot the upwardly projecting portions of the blank at the front and rear of the forming member are then folded downwardly over the inclined walls of the V-shaped groove 25 as shown in Fig. 6, thus forming the supporting members -e and fof the pot, as shown in Fig. 7. The pot thus formed may now be readily removed from the forming member and the operation repeated.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the frame 16 is rigidly mounted on the base 9 and the forming member 8 is pivoted at 35 to swing in relation to the frame 16. In the operation of this form of the invention the forming member 8 is rocked manually to move the blank thereon in and out of engagement with the perforating blades 14: and 15.
By adjusting the split ring 29 pots of various depths may be formed on the single forming member. By providing a series of forming members of different diameters pots of various sizes can be made.
In order to adjust the perforating mem bers in relation to the frame 16 they are preferably formed with threaded shanks 36 which are engaged by nuts 37 screwed on opposite sides of the frame 16 through which the shanks 36 pass; washers 38 being interposed between the nuts 37 and the frame 16. The perforating members 11 and 15 are preferably formed with knife edges so as to form elongated perforations in the blank.
What I claim is:
1. A device for forming planting pots of the character described, comprising a cylindrical forming member having a depression on its cylindrical periphery and a depression 011 its upper end and formed with alined channels above and below the first named depression thereon, and means cooperating with said channels to form a perforation in a blank surrounding the forming member.
