and useful Improvement in Windows, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a flexible transparent window pane adapted to be rolled up when opened and unwound'and drawn downwardly when closed, thereby providing a single window pane for the entire window, and permitting the opening of the entire window. 1
With the original window sash provided more than one-half of the window at one time and at the same time provide vertically movable sashes.
The invention consistsof the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly broken away and shown in section, the window being partly open, and shown as seen from the interior. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the right hand window boxing as seen upon Fig. 1 and at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section upon the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isa section upon the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing the lower portion of the window pane in vertical section and illustrating the manner of lockin the same to the window sill. Fig. .6 is a fragmentary plan view of a portion of the flex-' ible pane being shown in section. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail section upon the line 88 of Fig. 1.
In these drawings 1 represents the window casing comprising the usual side boxings and the vertical sides of said casing are vertically grooved as shown at 2, saidgrooves being partially closed or covered by strips of vertical beading 3, said stripsbeing slightly spaced apart thereby providing a narrow vertical groove 2.
To prevent wear, the groove is provided with a'metal lining 4 U-shaped in cross sec-v tion and with suitable vertical metal facing strips 5, as most clearly shown in Figs. 7 and 8. In the horizontal boxing at the top of the window casing is mounted a roller 6 slot communicating with the forms the window pane and which has a width equal to that of the space to be closed.
' The said flexible sheet has its vertical margins running in the slots formed by the beads 33, but said sheet does not extend into the grooves 2.
Upon the margins of said sheet are secured metal guide strips 8, which are bent U-shaped and the marginal portions of the sheet are clamped between the members of said U-shaped strip while the bow portion of the strip is bent into the form of a sleeve and travels in the groove 2. The end members of these guide strips extend into the slots formed by the beads, and owing to the fact that the distance between said beads is less than the diameter of the sleeve forming wardly and upwardly with respect to the sheet and forms a suitable ledge which can be readily grasped between'the fingers for the purpose of drawing the sheet downwardly, but more especially tor the purpose of forming. a tight joint upon the lower sill and providing suitable means-for locking the flexible sheet in closed position. For
this purpose the angled portion 9 is provided with a slot 10.
Mounted on the sill is a metal plate 11 which carries a suitable turn button '12 adapted to work through said slot as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
In one of the said boxesand preferably upon the right a gear wheel 16. A detachable handle 15 is adapted to be fitted upon a projecting squared end portion of theshaft 14. A gear hand side, is a bracket 13 in. which is journaled a shaft 14 provided with The upper section of the shaft 18 carries a bevel gear 21 which meshes with a bevel gear 22 carried by the roller 6. Upon the shaft 14 is placed a double pulley 23 and suitable cables 24c wind and unwind from said pulley as a drum and run over pulleys 25 at the bottom of the boxing and one of said cables then passes upwardly through one of the grooves 2 and has its end connected to one end of the bottom strip 9 and the other cable runs along beneath a lower sill and over a pulley 26 and up the other groove 2 and is connected to the opposite end of the strip 9.
It will be obvious that by means of the handle 15 and the gearing above described thedrum 16 can be rotated.
By turning said handle in one direction the flexible sheet will be wound upon the drum 6, thus opening the window to any desired extent.
By rotating the handle in the opposite 'direction, the sheet will unwind, and at the same time the cables 2% will wind upon the double pulley 23 and will therefore exert a positive downward pull upon the ends of the strip 9 thus drawing the flexible sheet downwardly as the same unwinds.
What I claim is vThe combination With a window casing of a roller arranged in the upper portion thereof, a flexible transparent sheet adapted to wind upon said roller, means for rotating said roller, means for guiding the marginal portions of the sheet, and a metal strip folded upon itself and then bent longitudinally to form an acute angle, the lower margin of the flexible sheet being secured between the vertical portions of said strip, the bow portion of said strip extending out Wardly and upwardly with respect to the sheet and adapted to engage the window sill, the said bow being transversely slotted and a locking device mounted upon the sill of the window casing and adapted to cooperate with said slot.
