Description

BENJAM|N F. ROBERTS. Improvement in Stove-Legs.
Patented May 9,1871.
f/Wf/i/di? s mace-5s) UNITED STATES BENJAMIN F. ROBERTS, OF LAGONA, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-LEGS.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent NO. I 14.713, dated May 9, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. RoBERTs, of Lacona, in the county of \Varren and State of Iowa, have invented'a certain new and useful Improvement in StoveLegs and Fastenings for Same; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part'of the same, and in which Figure lrep resents a vertical central section of my stove-leg and fastening; and Fig. 2, a section thereof taken through the line 00 w of Fig. 1, and looking at same in an inverted po sition.
Similar letters of reference in the two figures indicate corresponding parts of my invention.
This invention appertains to an improved stove-leg and fastening for same; and the nature thereof consists of an ordinary stove-leg with a wedge or other suitably-shaped recess or groove constructed in the lower side of that portion thereof whi ch enters thecleats attached to the'bottomof a stove, and an aperture terminating at its lower extremity in said groove, and of a lever having its fulcrum contiguous to and opposite the point where the vertical portion of the leg intersects with its horizontal portion, and from which fulcrum it can be readily removed, the end of the horizontal part of said'lever being supplied with a tooth or projection, and the vertical portion thereof with a spring, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a stove-leg, the under side of the horizontal portion of which, or that part which enters the cleats secured to the bottom of theordinary' stove, is constructed or formed with a wedge or other suitablyshaped groove or recess, a, by casting or forming said part with two flanges or projections, a a, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) which are made to diverge from each other from their front to their rear ends, the object of which will be seen in connection with the lever hereinafter explained.
B designates a lever, having its fulcrum b secured to the leg A contiguous to and opposite the point where the vertical portion of said leg intersects with its horizontal portion. The fulcrum b of lever Bis so constructed and secured to the leg A, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2, that the said lever, by moving it laterally in one direction, can be removed from said leg, the groove a, within which its horizontal portion fits, being of such ashape, as above described, as to permit of its having said motion. The end of the horizontal portion of the lever B is provided with a tooth or projection, 12, which passes up through an aperture, a, in the leg A, and enters an aperture or recess which is to be made in the bot tonrof the stove for its reception when the handle or vertical portion of said lever is pushed forward, thereby locking the stoveleg in place, the said lever being pushed forward and held firmly in its place by means of a spring, b secured at one end to the said lever and pressing at its opposite end against the stove-leg. When it is desired to withdraw or disengage the tooth of the lever from the stove in order to allow the stove-leg to be removed from its place, it is only necessary to apply pressure to the handle or vertical portion of the lever in such a manner as to compress its spring, which will permit said handle to be pushed inward, consequently depressing the outer end of the horizontal part of the lever and relieving its tooth from contact with the stove.
It will be observed that by means of the groove a, the walls of which are formed by the projections a a, the horizontal arm of the lever B is always held in such a position as to cause its tooth to readily enter the opening a in the stove-leg, and prevented from being drawn out of line with said opening.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut, is-
1. The stove-leg provided with a wedgeshaped groove and an opening, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The stove-leg constructed as described, in combination with the lever B, having a spring, 11 and tooth b, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto set my hand, this 31st day of January, A. D. 1871, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
B. F. ROBERTS.
