To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DUDLEY SHOEMAKER, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple Tapping- Spouts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the handling of molten-metal, and has particular reference to a novel tapping-spout so arranged that the stream of molten-metal around an openhearth furnace may be supplied to a plurality of ladles.
I am aware that the mechanism by which the above result may be secured is not broadly new, having been disclosed in earlier patents. However, in the apparatus heretoforesuggested there are some defects, the principal one of which is inherent in the handling of molten-metal which flows with such force as follows the tapping of an open- .hearth furnace. It has long been desirable to provide means whereby an open-hearth furnace may be constructed of large size and capacity, but the capacity of stationary open-hearth furnaces has been limited to the capacity of the largest ladle or receptacle which will contain a single charge from such furnace. This has been due not only to limitations in the size of the ladle but to the fact that in tapping the metal from a fur nace it is not possible to tap .a portion of the charge into one ladle and then divert the charge into another ladle, for the reason that the first ladle will not then have a protective coating of slag, and excessive oxidation and cooling will occur. It follows, therefore, that the metal should be discharged into the two ladles simultaneously in order that each ladle may receive its share of molten-metal and likewise its share of slag for a covering.
My apparatus is adapted for such operation and consists, broadly stated, in a single leading-spout and a bifurcated deliveryspout, the leading-spout being movable transversely within .the bifurcated spout, whereby the flow of metal may be controlled to direct desired quantities of the same into each ladle.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view of novel apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will be seen that an open-hearth furnace 10 is provided through the front-wall thereof with the usual spout 11, this spout directing metal into a leadingspout 12. This latter spout 12 is mounted on a saddle 13, which saddle has a downwardly-extended shaft 14, a lever 15 being connected to a squared lower-end thereof. The saddle has a suitable bearing in a member 16 which is carried by frame-members 17. A connectinglink 18 joins the rod 15 and extends horizontally, providing connection to a hand-lever 19 located a suitable distance from the spout. The forward-end of the spout carries a roller 20, this roller traveling on a plain surface or track 21. On movement of the hand-lever 19, it will'be seen that the leading-spout 12 may be moved on its pivot 14 as required. The forward-end of this spout is seated within the enlarged upper-end 22 of a bi; furcated member having two delivery-spouts 23, 2 beneath which a pair of ladles may be positioned, such ladles being indicated in dotted lines in Fig.1. In this figure the leading-spout is shown as centrally-disposed within the delivery-spout. The furnace will preferably be tapped with the spouts in such relation. However, if the operator finds that one ladle is filling more rapidly than the other, the leading-spout may be shifted as required to change the portion of metal delivered to each ladle. As the charge is nearly completed, the slag will begin to flow and a proper quantity thereof will be supplied to each ladle.
This construction is particularly advantageous for reasons already described and for the additional reason that no member is disposed in the path of the traveling metal which would tend to interrupt or interfere with the flow thereof. Furthermore, the
spouts may be constructed with no greater length than heretofore.
I claim: l
