To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EVERETT A. BRowN,'a citizen of the United States, residing at Calverton, in the county of Suffolk, Long Island, and State of New York, have invented. new and useful Improvements in Exercising Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to exercising apparatus, and has for an objectto provide an apparatus for use in high jumping, pole vaulting, etc., and whereby the horizontal bar usually employed in connection with an apparatus of this kind can be readily adjusted to various heights.

The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a means carried by the usual standards, whereby the horizontal bar can be quickly adjusted to various heights and which means will substantially support the horizontal bar in position for pole vaulting, high jumping or the like.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device; Fig.2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1, showing the base of one of the standards; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the securing members for holding the base to the ground or floor.

Referring more particularly to the views, I provide similar standards 10, each carried on a base 11, preferably in the shape of a cross, the said standards being provided with a series of vertically arranged apertures 12, and each standard having its lower end reduced and threaded for engagement with the center of the base 11 in order that the standards will be properly supported in a vertical position. Each of the arms of the bases 11 is provided with an opening 18 and a plurality of opposed slots 14 arranged on both sides of the opening 13 so that a securing member 15 in the nature of a spike can be passed through an opening 13 to extend into the ground or floor and have pointed lugs 16 formed on a head 17 of the securing Specification of Letters Patent.

member 15 extend into the slots 14, thus rigidly holding the base in position and preventing the standards carried by the bases from toppling over.

A horizontal bar 18 is adapted to be sup ported on the standards 10 by supporting members 19, adjustably arranged upon the standards. Each of the supporting members consists of a band 20 loosely encircling the standard and slidable vertically thereon, with the said band having a tubular extension 21 terminating at its outer end in a lat eral circular flange 22. The outer end of the extension 21 is normally closed by a cover 23 and arranged to slide within the extension 21 is a rod 2 1 having its inner end adapted to extend into the apertures 12 formed in the standards 10, an expansible spring 25 being also arranged within the tubular extension 21 and encircling the rod 24, with one end of the spring abutting against the flange 22 and the other end of the spring abutting against a disk-like member 26 formed on the rod 24 adjacent the inner end of the rod.

The outer end of the rod 2 1 is preferably enlarged to provide a knob 27, and in the use of the device, when the supporting member 19 is in position on the stem 10, the ends of the horizontal bar are adapted to be supported on the extensions 21 of the supporting members, it being understood that one supporting member is provided for each standard. Now when it is desired to vary the height of the bar relatively to the ground, the cover 23 is removed from the extension and then by pulling outwardly on the rod 241 the inner end thereof will be removed from the aperture 12 into which it extends, thus permitting of sliding the supporting member upon the standard. lVhen the supporting member has been moved to the desired position on the standard the rod is released and the expansible spring, acting upon the rod, will force its inner end into one of the apertures 12 in the standard, thus locking the supporting member in position. The horizontal bar is now arranged upon the extension to be supported thereby and. it will be apparent that with a structure of this character the height of the horizontal bar from the ground can be readily changed with very little efiiort.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that a device of the character described can be cheaply manufactured, will efliciently accomplish the desired result and can be readily operated.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a device of the class described, the combination with a standard provided with a series of apertures and a bar, of a supporting member slidable on the standard and con sisting of a band loosely encircling the standard, a tubular extension on the band, a rod slidable in the extension and adapted to have its inner end extend into one of the apertures of the standard, a spring encir cling the rod, a disk carried on the rod adj acent its inner end and having one end of the spring abutting against the same, a handle on the other end of the rod and lying exteriorly of the tubular extension, said handle abutting against the extension and said disk adapted to abut against the standard being adapted to limit the projection of the inner end of the rod into oneof the apertures of the standard, with the said tubular extension constituting a support for the said bar adapted to loosely repose upon the extension, and a cover adapted to be fitted over the end of the extension and inclose the handle of the rod, said cover providing additional length for the extension whereby the bar can be readily supported on the extension.
