Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL A. GRIFFITH, OF ST. CHARLES, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOCK-MARKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,674, dated May 9, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL A. GRIFFITH, of St. Charles, in the county of St. Charles and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Stock-Markers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan View showing under side of plate-blade. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing ribbon-blade.
My invention has relation to means for marking stock by clipping the ears, &c.; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a pair of nippers, to which shears or clips of different patterns can be attached, thus enabling each owner to distinguish his cattle by the form of the excision.
The letter A of the drawings designates the shanks of my nippers, the ends of which are curved toward each other in such a manner as to form a stop, which limits the action of-- the blades at a certain point. The shanks are pivoted together at Z.
B represents one blade of the shears, formed of plate-steel, and having a cutting-edge, b, nearly surrounding it. This blade may be V- shaped, as shown in the drawings; or it may have such other form as the owner of the stock may desire. This blade is firmly secured to the shank by means of the screw 0 and offset d.
O designates the other blade of the shears. This blade is ribbon-shaped and fitted accurately to the edge of the plate-blade B, in connection with which it operates.
. D represents a bar welded to the back of the ribbon-blade.O, and designed to hold the foot of the screw 0, whereby this blade is attached to the shank. Steadiness is secured and lateral play avoided by means of the otfset a, seated in a notch, s, in the end of the shank.
I claim I The stock-marker herein described, consisting of a pair of shears provided with the horizontal plate-blade B, of angular or other irregular form, and the vertical ribbon-blade O, fitted around and arranged to out against the edge of the plate-blade in such a manner as to take a piece out of the ear of an animal at a single cut, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above .I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
D. A. GRIFFITH.
